Darrelle is gone, thats the reality, he cant help us and we cant help him, but The Jets can help themselves by patching up a few holes on the roster that will go a long way. We've been sitting pretty in 1'st place for the 1'st 3 weeks and I want the Jets management to keep us there. These are my idea's to help us going forward this year. Im Breaking this down into a few easy steps.
Step 1- Sign Plaxico Burress- I suggested this a few weeks ago and got laughed at. I guess the majority thought that Stephen Hill would replace Plax rather easily and our red zone efficciency would pick up where it had left off last year. Well, it hasnt worked out that way, and even with DK returning there is little to be excited about. No matter how much any of us dislike Plaxico, he added a very nice dimension to our offense that we're missing this year, He would use his large frame to box out defenders and he'd make the jump ball catches that Sanchez aint to bad at delivering. He's not expensive, he's unemployed and definately hungry for a chance to work. With the Jets offense looking worse by the second, this is a nice opportunity to improve in a vital department with a proven player with whom we had past success with.
Step 2- Pick a QB- 3 weeks into the season and im almost convinced that our coaches are clueless when it comes to this 2 QB shuffle. It worked for 1 week and then nose-dived off a cliff. It seems that when Sanchez is failing and Tebow can help, they dont use him properly. Theres no trickery going on here, only stupidity. Wasting a valuable 3'rd down opportunity to throw a bad pass right off Tim's helmet deserves 10 lashes in public, shame on you coaches. Somewhere in the sticks Schotty is laughing. I dont know if this thing can work or not but Sparano and Rex sure dont have this figured out, leaving everyone frustrated. Pick a QB and Stick with him, I dont care who it is at this point, because neither is persuading me.
Step 3- Trade The Other- There is definately trade potential in both of our QB's. Mark has won 4 playoff games in 2 trips and Tebow is a money making machine. The team I feel would be perfect for this trade opportunity is the Cleveland Browns. Brandon Weeden falls into the exclusive category of QB's who are worse than ours. Mike Holmgren most likely hates himself for that pick and I believe would jump at the chance to rectify that decision. This is where The Jets offer 1 of our QB's + a draft pick for Joe Haden. Joe Haden is a very talented cornerback, and is a huge upgrade over Kyle Wilson. he would allow Rex to run his defense in similar fashion as when Revis was here so we dont take a huge step back. I'm not sure what it would take get him in the door but i say Mike T should move a mountain to do so. At the same time, Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow are huge upgrades over Weeden so its a win/win situation, unless Holmgren is planning on drafting another QB early next draft.
Step 4- RB Committee- The popular phrase this week on GGN goes something like this, "Shonn Greene sucks, we need to start Powell or McKnight". I dont entirely agree with this statement. Powell has a little more ablility than Greene but is slow, not a bruiser, and totally unproven. As a ground and pound team, we need somebody who is reliable, wont fumble, and proven to carry the rock 20+ times a game. Powell does not meet this criteria even but I think he's earned a chance. For all his faults, im never worried about Greene fumbling the ball or losing effectiveness during the game, he is by all definitions, a bell cow. Joe McKnight is the softest player on our team, he's not conditioned for the constant beatings that running backs take on a weekly basis. He also has a bad case of fumblitis and is not a viable option as our starter. However, there is room for him in certain situations including screens and draw plays where he can rip off big chunks at unexpected times. McKnight getting too many carries would ultimately take away from his outstanding kick return ability and that is where we need him the most. The solution i propose is a full comittee at running back. A nice mix of Greene and Powell with a dash of McKnight. It seems very Mike Shannahan like, but for the Jets, this may be our only solution. Powell should be in on every 1st down, he has more ability than Greene and is a decent pass blocker. Having Greene run on 1st down is a waste but on 2nd and 3rd down could be effective if he keeps those 3-4 yard gains consistant. 10+ carries a piece for Powell and Greene with a good 5 for McKnight is the way to go.
To wrap this up, I think this is all very practical. I'm no expert on trade value, so if I'm way off on the Hayden trade I'd appreciate it if you'd correct me. We're in 1'st place and its our management's responsibility to keep us there. Go Jets Don't Give Up.
