During the 1st quarter of Sunday's game, it was looking like the Jets
offense was picking up right where it left off after the week 1 shellacking of Buffalo. 90 yds. (80 through the air) and 7 points. What more can you ask for on an opening drive? Something happened after that drive, everything was wrong. The play calling by Sporano didn't continue to benefit Sanchez. Sanchez was throwing the ball, but the routes were sloppy and a few drops just totally took the QB and the whole offense out of rhythm.
My whole thing coming into this game, even without the best defensive player in the NFL in Mr.Revis sidelined, wasn't something everybody didn't know before. You have to get Ben Roethislberger down on first contact, otherwise he's going to extend the plays and hurt you. That's exactly what he did on Sunday. Whiffs at the big QB and poor tackling were the main reason the Jets loss this game. Also a huge play in the game, a 3rd and 16 heave by Big Ben to Mike Wallace
for the touchdown. Now I saw the press conference Rex had on Monday and he was defending Cromartie’s coverage. That's where Rex has to be tougher on his player’s because that was absolutely horrible coverage by Cro. His forte is supposed to be hanging with big receivers and being fast, big and about athletic as you would want at the position. Sorry Rex. Your cornerback was just totally out of sync once he hit the 5 yard line. He was better off knocking it down and just shielding Wallace instead of trying to stay step for step with him. Don' t get me wrong, it was a hell of a play by Wallace , especially getting both of his feet down. Having said all that, there's no doubt in my mind that Cromartie is still an above average Cornerback opposite Revis and will make some big plays this year. But that might be the worst play he makes all year.
Last thing I want to touch on was the use of Tebow. First 2 wildcat plays: Tebow up the middle for 22 yards. Next play; handoff to Mcknight for 12 yards. Yea the 3rd play they loss 6 yards but at that point you’re still at plus 28 yards after 3 plays. Why not let it roll for a little longer? Isn't that why you brought Tebow in to be a spark when the offense is sputtering or out of sync? I'm probably Sanchez' biggest supporter, but that’s a situation at that point of the game that would have been the perfect time to really test this Tebow run offense and just see what it does. Hey, if I were Rex, the way Shonn Greene's been inconsistent with injuries and ball control issues, I'd line Tebow up at halfback and give him a regular 20-25 carries a game. This will either do one of two things: Be successful and show people why Tebow’s a "football player" before he's a QB, or maybe light a fire under Greene and get him going, because we all have seen the flashes Shonn has shown.
This was just one of those games on the schedule where we fans could have easily chalked up as a loss. When the schedule comes out in April, everybody has a pretty good feel of the tough games and coming to Pittsburgh week 2, their home opener, it’s tough man. Jets are still at 1-1 and the sting of this loss wasn't as bad knowing the Cardinals
had their shocking win in New England. Hopefully we take care of business against a Dolphins
team they should handle. I tell you this, if the Jets don't come out of Miami with a W, with the 49ers
and the Texans
looming, they'll be a good chance the Jets will have to climb out of a deep hole after 5 weeks.
