Morning Jets fans, and I am delighted to say that we are back to gameday once again. That week seemed to fly by and I'm certainly not complaining about that. The week always seems a little easier after a win, so lets hope next week is the same.
As always lets get into the huddle. I'll keep it 80% Jets, but may have to throw in a little celebration for my Irish beating a top 10 ranked opponent for the first time in 7 years, and starting 3-0 and enjoying our best start since 2002.
Flights grounded due to cloudy weather! It's certainly going to be very strange to see the defense line up today and not see #24 roaming around his island. There is no doubt that Revis is the best defensive player on this team and best cornerback in the league. However as much as I'm going to miss him, I'm excited to see Kyle Wilson given the shot on the outside. He was a great cornerback at Boise and despite some early struggles he really developed last year and has already put an interception on the board this year. I expect Big Ben to target him a lot and we'll roll some coverage help his way, but I'm confident in Wilson's ability. It's a great chance to showcase your skill set, and having a cornerback tandem of Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson is still a lot better than a lot of teams starting tandem in the league this year.
You wanted a shot, well here it is! Injuries, injuries, injuries. Dustin Keller will also be missing, before last weeks victory over the Bills, this would have scared me a lot more than it does right now. For a long time Keller has been Sanchez's go to guy and he has been his first read, however last week Sanchez really threw the ball around. Eight players recorded receptions last week against the Bills and Sanchez will need to repeat that again tonight. One factor to watch is Jeff Cumberland had 3 grabs for 33 yards last week, he has struggled with some injuries and never really fulfilled his promise, well tonight he gets a chance to make a statement. His blocking can be horrendous but he should cause some mismatch problems with the linebackers and secondary of the Steelers who will likely be missing some key personal.
Silence on the Eastern Front! Has anyone noticed that those old chemistry issue stories have dried up this week, hell even the circus stories have been absent from my morning reading, I wonder why that it. The NY media especially but any national media outlet always look for angles to sell hits and papers, people always enjoy reading about problems rather than everything being A-OK! Unfortunately when the Jets are winning and giving the tabloids nothing to write about, it gets a little harder. I did see one report, I believe it came from the Daily News that stated Tim Tebow would ask for a trade if he is still stuck behind Sanchez by the end of the year.....Tebow laughed that off as nonsense, that's what I like to call a swing and a miss.
LaRon Landry has that swagger back! Earlier this week LaRon Landry stated that the New York Jets defense was better than the Pittsbugh Steelers defense this year. I wouldn't expect him to say anything less, when two teams are very evenly matched in one facet of the game, you have to believe that your guy is going to pick your guys. Some Steelers fans took this as a slight, I don't understand that personally. If you went to Harrison or Polamalu or Clark who do you think they would choose. You prove it on the field, if we score more points than the Steelers today, Landry will be right, at least for today.
10 Things I Think I Think
- We are going to see a lot more 4-3 fronts today without Bryan Thomas
- We will get at least three sacks today and all will come from the defensive line (Coples x 2, Wilkerson x1)
- McKnight will play a bigger factor in the game, especially on offense
- Mani Te'o is still the best linebacker in college football, playing like he did last night after the week he had.
- Peyton Manning looked pretty good throwing to his right and left in the Broncos victory over the Steelers.
- That regression that people expected from Alex Smith in San Fran.....I don't see it happening.
- Jay Cutler is still one of the most unreliable quarterbacks in the league. I'm glad we didn't trade for him.
- Jim Schwartz and Jim Harbaugh should just shake hands after tonight's game and forget the past.
- Stephen Hill will have another good game today and come away with another score.
- If we win today, the media is going to jump all over the bandwagon, so be prepared for that this week.
"I find that pretty funny," Tebow said. "It’s about as true as me living in Hoboken (N.J.), I think. (laughter) I guess it’s just part of what you have to deal with, is rumors and stuff like that, I don’t know. All I can say is, I love being here as a Jet, I’m thankful for it and I want to be here for a long time. I guess you just have to put up with stuff like that"
Tim Tebow on the rumours he will look for a trade after this season if he is not starting
"We know plenty about ourselves already," Ryan said. "We know we’re a good football team. Obviously, you’re going into an environment like Pittsburgh. It’s about as tough as it gets playing (them). (They are) 9-0 (in) their last nine home openers (and) all that kind of stuff. But again, finding out about ourselves, I think we know enough about ourselves. But we’ll see I guess. After the game, maybe I’ll be ready to answer that question more, but right now, I think we know plenty about ourselves."
Rex Ryan on if he will know more about his team after the Pittsburgh game
"Head first, high velocity, no regrets"

A Moment In History: Parcells Departs With A Poem
So far in his series we have looked at the Heidi Game, we have looked at the Fake Spike Game and now we are going to look at the moment Bill Parcells left the Jets for temporary retirement.
After the 1999 season, Bill Parcells met his players in the locker room to inform them of his decision to retire from the game of football and to never coach again. Perhaps the most interesting part of this, is he did it with a poem. A 1934 Poem by Dale Wilmbrow. Of course Parcells would come out of retirement to coach the Cowboys, but if he had left on this note, it would have been highly iconic:
When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what the man has to say.
For it isn't your father, mother or wife,
Whose judgement upon you must pass,
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life,
is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may think you are a straight-shootin chum,
And call for a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says your only a bum
if you can't look him straight in the eye
He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears,
If you've cheated the man in the glass
Today is going to be an absolute battle as it always is between these two teams, I watch football for games like this. Two very tough teams who play as physical as you can, who leave everything out on the field and who don't back down. We are going to see some bone crunching hits, we'll probably see some blood along the way. The battle in the trenches is going to be something to watch, this is a game that should be played in the snow in December with play-off aspirations on the line. In the infamous words of Bart Scott 'Can't Wait'!
I watched a fair bit of college football yesterday, seeing Manti Te'o take the field the same week he lost two people close to him, his girlfriend and his grandmother, and then put in a performance like that. Wow! I remember him explaining his decision to stay in school for his senior year, how the money and the fame just don't matter to him and the connections you build through your college career will always be more important.....whichever team takes Manti next year is going to have a Patrick Willis type for the next 10 years.
There are some great games on this weekend in general. Falcons and Broncos, Lions and 49'ers and Saints/Panthers. We are in for a great day of football all around. Just to remind everyone that the Steelers fans have been good enough to come over and join in the discussion this week so please be polite to all visiting members. If you believe that someone is personally attacking you or trolling the board please notify one of the moderators so they can take care of it.
