I was very optimistic before a few weeks ago about the team as a whole. A more heavily 46 defense combined with our young and veteran acquisitions had me basking in optimism. I had fanciful visions of Coples flying off the edge and giving Brady a career ending injury, Demario Davis neutralizing tight ends, and Kyle Wilson having interceptions on a regular basis. This is all somewhat reasonable to expect from the defense (ok, maybe brady not being out of the league forever, but him being on his back when playing us all the time).
And unlike many, I was very high on the Sparano pickup for a few reasons. Firstly, he has useful outside perspective on the rest of the AFC east along with his staff that he's brought in (Guglielmo). Second, he would install a system that would work around Mark's strengths and maximize the talents of our personel. And third, he's not Schottenheimer. I really believed that the only hole on the offense was right tackle. People spoke of a lack of firepower and yet I could never see it. Holmes and Keller are decently accomplished on our squad. Kerley had an impressive rookie season and flashed his explosiveness and playmaking ability. Joe McKnight 2.0 looked primed to go after 2 seasons of being in the league, and Stephen Hill, if nothing else, could greatly contribute by running go routes all day.
Then the offense suffered a multitude of injuries to its receivers. Then there were rumblings about Kerley's work ethic. And then our offensive line stunk up the joint as a whole in 2 preseason games. And then it became painfully obvious to me through fan posts and research that to be a ground and pound team, you need a stellar line and an average back, or an average line and a steller back. We at the moment do not seem to have either of those combinations. So my question to everyone is . . .
What is YOUR realistic, best case scenario prediction for the offense this year? In other words, what would have to happen for the offense to be just good enough for us to win games? Perhaps Joe McKnight having an insanely good breakout year as the #1RB? Maybe acquiring an average RT in free agency or through trade? Post your glass half full predictions.
