The NFL supplemental draft takes place at 1:00pm EST this Thursday. There usually isn't a great deal to get excited about with this draft but this year is a little different. Former Utah and Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon conducted his pro day at the Houston Texans practise facility Tuesday, a workout that was attended by 21 NFL teams.
Gordon a 6'4, 224lb wide receiver posted a 4.52 in the 40 yard dash, benched 225lb's 13 times and recorded a vertical leap of 36 inches. A highly touted receiver, he made his mark at Baylor in 2010 posting 42 catches for 714 yards and 7 touchdowns. I remember seeing him on a vertical route, burning corners and comfortable bringing the ball in on numerous occasions.
He does have good hands, and he proved this by not dropping a single pass during his workout. However he has been known to be a little tame at times, and he doesn't play as physical as his size or frame would suggest. He stills looks a little rusty in his route running and after sitting out the entire 2011 season after a transfer to Utah, will be a little behind heading into anyones camp.
He does have off-field issues, he was arrested in 2010 on a Marijuana possession charge, and then afterwards was permanently suspended from Baylor for failing a drugs test. After sitting out 2011 due to NCAA rules after his transfer, Gordon decided to enter the 2012 Supplemental draft for financial purposes.
He is creating quite the buz, especially around wide receiver needy teams like the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins. Some have suggested that he could go as high as the 2nd round, or probably more likely the 3rd. He won't drop past the fourth, so for the Jets to select him, you would think we would need to put up a 3rd minimum. After one good season in college, with off the field issues and two relatively young receivers on the books in Kerley and Hill, I'm not putting a 3rd on the line for Gordon. I think he'll end up in Cleveland.
The only other prospect generating any kinf od buzz is Carson-Newman linebacker Larry Lumpkin, a player with plenty of talent but no desire. His coaches have commented how he was late and missed at least one team meeting a week. Someone may throw a 6th or 7th out there for him, otherwise he'll be a camp body on someones team.
