Tanny needs to embrace change regarding the draft

Yes i'm back harping on about Tanny again . I have gone through my fears for the future regarding our cap but for this post i feel like i should try and help him right the ship ( Titanaic reference ) .

We all are aware of the good and bad thing that Tanny does but he needs to move with the times as the league is changing at a far superior pace than ever before . He main aim going into the future should be to adapt to what the team can do and can't do any given season , what players he can and can't afford to bring back , what guys are worth trading for any what guys aren't .

With the new CBA and rookie pay cap in place , now is the perfect time to go a different direction regarding his draft policy . For the most part he has done a decent job finding us starters from the draft but the problem has always been we had very few picks in lots of these drafts . The year we drafted Sanchez he had a 100% record of finding us starters . Imagine this year with our 10 picks he could even have a 60% record , that would be 6 players that could help the team .

The problem with having so few picks is as much to do with cap as it is a depth issue . Rookies have never been cheaper to sign so going into the future i would like to see between 20 and 25 players on our team still on their rookie contract . That would be an average of 5 rookies a year for 4 years . This would help us in many areas but mostly cap . 20 rookies would cost approximately 25m- 30m in cap space max leaving over 100m every year on the rest of the team . if only 8 of those rookies were starters ( 2 a year ) and the rest were depth players it would still represent great value for money .

It gives us a young , cheap base for us to build a team around , We would have less worry at losing players because we have no cap room to bring them back and we could afford to sign good FA's in areas of need instead of using our draft picks on trades .

Good football teams are as successful off the field as they are on it and if Tanny can put a sustainable plan in place that gives the team solid foundations then we can have a mountain of sucess in the future . Using the new rookie pay cap to his advantage will bear a lot more fruit in the long run than his old method of trading away picks for immediate and expensive talent .

Hopefully the fact that we have 10 picks this year could be the start of this new plan and he will continue to have many more drafts with all his picks available .
