I think it's time to mention the term that nobody else seems to want to say for this year.

As we enter the draft, should the Jets put their previous philosophy of "win now" on a back burner and consider this a "rebuilding year?" I was hesitant to do this myself but after reading some of the draft articles and thinking about the problems of this team I think it might be wise specifically with regard to our drafting strategy. I will explain my thoughts after the jump:

First off, I want to say that I am not giving up on this season. But after reading the articles on RT, drafting a FS early in the draft and the number of holes in our team, I think this might be a wise course of action for a number of reasons.

Since Rex has been here, it has been super bowl predictions and win now mentality has ruled all of our moves. We have cap space issues due to bringing in guys like Calvin Pace and Bart Scott who really haven't lived up to their salary. I think drafting Ducasse as high as we did was another example of that. What it has left us is a team largely without depth, a lot of older over priced players and the constant sense of defeat at not achieving our goal (making it to the SB). We came close twice but I do not feel we have the pieces in place to make a serious run this year. We have question marks at QB, a new offensive coordinator, a backfield that does not seem ready to handle a ground and pound philosophy, a poor choice at RT, no FS, no Punter, no pass rush, etc. etc. While some of these problems should be fixed through the draft and continued pick ups in free agency, I don't think they all can. My fear is that we draft for position rather than BPA, which is how you build a team to win consistently in the future.

So for this draft, I think we should totally stick with BPA even if it involves trading down to acquire more picks. Perhaps even trading a player or two to help us move back up if need be. While I love Devito, he becomes a free agent next year and is solid against the run. And DL is one area where we do have some depth. I think a two year plan to get our house in order might pay far greater dividends for a longer time than the win now philosophy we have been using.

And please, no cursing at me for suggesting this. I look forward to your comments.
