Quinton Coples...not exactly a bad thing

With the selection of UNC DE Quinton Coples, I am sure every Jets fan was shocked and pissed off. At first, I was one of them. But now I am thinking the exact opposite. Plain and Simple: Quinton Coples is an absolute MONSTER! His measurable's are out of this world. He is 6'6 280 lbs. and he runs a 4.6-4.7 He also ran a 10 yd split of 1.63!!!! That is insane. To give some perspective....LeMichael James ran a 1.60. Coples will contribute immediately and will be one of the new young passrushers in the league. Take the jump, and I am positive I can convince the naysayers.

With the addition of Karl Dunbar as our DL coach, Quinton Coples makes actually a ton of sense. Karl Dunbar is a big fan of 4 man fronts. and if we learned anything from the first two years of Rex Ryans defense, when he called majority of the plays, Rex loves to use many different fronts. Anyone who says the jets are a primary 3-4 defense is a fool. The jets are a hybrid defense that bases out of a 3-4 scheme, but majority of the time they are in hybrid schemes with extra DBs or extra linemen. NOW, where Coples fits in: Coples can rush the passer. Its that simple. You put him on the edge and he is going to get after the quarterback. Yes, there have been reports of him taking plays off and blah blah blah. But guess what...there was a guy last year who had the same things said about him.....his name was Jason Pierre-Paul. We have all seen how that worked out. JPP is now almost unblockable and is going into the 2012 season as a top 3 pass rusher in the league EASILY. Coples has Julius Peppers-like talent. I mean he has a ridiculously high ceiling. Rex is going to get his hands on this guy and will have the opportunity to produce an elite passrusher and DE.

Another bothersome thing that has been coming up is the Vernon Gholston comparison and that Tanny is making the same mistake all over again. I dont know if anyone realizes....but this is a REX RYAN PICK. This was Rex's guy and this was Rex's pick. 150%. Rex is not an idiot. He has consistently produced top players on defense. The Ravens defense was RIDICULOUS under Rex, because of guys like Adalius Thomas, or Bart Scott. and yes of course Ray and terrell. But still, he has shown that he consistently can get the best out of players. Coples will be no different. He has already said he is not going to try to transition Coples like vernon was transitioned. Vernon rose in the draft due to a crazy combine and crazy athleticism. Not because of pure production. Coples was a beast in college and he is pretty damn athletic, but he has produced in college. More so in his junior year than his senior year, but still he is a seriously talented defensive end. Also, Rex didnt draft Gholston and I dont think he would have if he was with us when Vern was drafted.

I will never never never never ever discredit Rex Ryan's knowledge of defense. He is a top 3 defensive mind in this league behind only(my opinion) dick lebeau and dom capers. *yes i know everyone would say belichick but i think belichick is a better head coach then defensive coordinator* And even then you could make an argument for rex to be ahead of them. Rex would not take this guy if he didnt think that he could have an impact. We all make it seem like these coaches have no idea what they're doing. Rex Ryan knows how to run a defense, and an extremely high level elite defense in the NFL. HELLOOO HE HAS DONE YEAR AFTER YEAR! Bottom line, Coples is on this team for a reason now...to rush the passer and kill Tom Brady. End of story. And i stand behind Rex in thinking that that is exactly what he'll do.
