First off...Let's wait till the terms of the contract are disclosed before we go jumping to conclusions about how horrible this deal is. First let's look at what we do know about his old contract:
|Year||Salary Cap Number||Dead Money if Cut||Cap Savings if Cut|
Right now what I've seen about the new contract is 20 mil guaranteed. So if they were going for Sanchez in 2012 they would be paying him 14.2 million of that next season alone. So for an extra 5.8 million they get to keep him for 2013 and its split over two years to free up cap space. I'm guessing(Purely a guess because its the only thing that makes sense in my mind) the contract is going to give him most of the 20 million hes due in the first 2 years, after that the jets are off the hook for the rest of it. Who knows how Tanny structured the thing. I actually think its a good move for the Jets if it saves a few million in cap space this year when things were tight and moves it to 2013 when we will have more money.
With the old deal Sanchez over the next two years would have made 22.7 Mil with his new contract Sanchez if he gets 10 mil per year for the next two years(All the guaranteed money) 20 mil (That's not to say this is the only way it could go down, Tanny could do something like 8 mil 2012 8 mil 2013 and the the remaining 4 mil would be dead money if cut in 2014..but I would trade 4 mil of dead money in 2014 for 6 mil of cap now). If the jets were already going to roll with him for 2012 this isn't really going to cost the team that much and it will free up some cap this year when it is tight to get some better help around him. I'm not sure this is how the contract will come out but there are ways this could work out well for the Jets so let's stop acting like the sky is falling and wait and see the terms of it. If its a horrible contract I'll be the first one to call for Tanny's head...but if its something like 10 mil per for the next two years that's less than what we would have been paying Sanchez over the next two years anyway and frees up some valuable cap space now which we can use to become a more complete team.
If you want someone..I don't know say Mario Williams now with D'Brick and Sanchez's restructure you can go get him and still fill other holes, this restructure opens the door for us to have an active free agency and better our team. I for one am glad Manning is out of the picture one way or the other so we won't get held hostage like a Nnamdi situation..I know he says he is deciding next week or whatever, but nothing says he can't drag it out a bit if he or his agent wants to..I for one am glad the Jets won't be part of that situation and we can focus on making the team better and filling out our roster. Mark is obviously the starting QB next season if you don't like it go head and complain I guess, but the debate is pretty much settled on that front. Let's look forward to an active free agency and a good solid draft!
