2012 Wish List: Part 3
This will be my 3rd and final wish list before free agency starts. The horrendous 2011 season is in our rearview mirror, and we can't afford to keep looking in it. There are a lot of needs to fill and very little cap room to fill them. Even with our cap room sorrows, we should still be able to put together a decent offseason. According to NyJetsCap.com, Tanny can clear anywhere from $15 to $20 million in cap space for 2012. I'll mention a few of those suggested moves later. It is probably more likely that it will be closer to the $15 million side. Stay tuned after the jump to see some cap moves, and my final 2012 wish list.
Rework/Cut
- Rework: D’Brickashaw Ferguson - Possible Cap Savings= $4 Million
- Rework: Mark Sanchez - Possible Cap Savings= $4.3 Million
- Rework: Antonio Cromartie - Possible Cap Savings= $2 Million
- Cut/Resign: Eric Smith - Possible Cap Savings= $1.4 Million
- Cut: Wayne Hunter - Possible Cap Savings= $2.5 Million (So much for that Something will still be done)
- Cut: TJ Conley - Possible Cap Savings= $.4 Million
- Cut: Gerald Alexander - Possible Cap Savings= $.7 Million
- Possible Unforeseen Moves - Possible Cap Savings $2.8 Million
Total Cap Savings= $18.1 Million - This $18.1 Million will be used to sign our own free agents, draft picks, and other free agent signings.
Signing Our Own Free Agents
- Sione Pouha: Possible Cap Hit= $3 Million
- Jim Leonhard: Possible Cap Hit= $2 Million
- Robert Turner: Possible Cap Hit= $1 Million
- Marquice Cole: Possible Cap Hit= $.4 Million
- Aaron Maybin: Possible Cap Hit= $.6 Million
- Patrick Turner: Possible Cap Hit= $.8 Million
Total Cap Hit= $7.8 Million - This will leave us $10.3 Million for the draft, and other free agents. The Draft should cost us about $4.5 Million, leaving us $5.8 Million for free agents
Free Agency
- S Michael Griffin: Possible Cap Hit= $3 Million
- OT Anthony Collins: Possible Cap Hit= $.5 Million
- WR Braylon Edwards: Possible Cap Hit= $.8 Million
- K Steven Hauschka: Possible Cap Hit= $.4 Million
- TE Kellen Davis: Possible Cap Hit= $.5 Million
Total Cap Hit= $5.2 Million (Note: All these numbers I am throwing out there, are based on 2011 cap numbers, and may not reflect what their 2012 cap numbers will be.)

Thank you
I was going to wait a while to post this, but the Jets already threw a wrench in my plans with Hunter.

IMO before the cuts we have 8 million in carry over
It’s hard to keep track of all the numbers flying around. But if you double the cap hits on your free agency numbers, that 8 million is absorbed, with a little operating capital for the year, so the net effect is zero.
Please do not let this detail, deter from the fact that this is a very good piece of work
Really well gone GGM. Love the round 3 and 4 draft picks and Michael Griffin as a FA pick-up. I wouldn’t mind starting 2012 with that 53 man roster. Although I would like to bring back Braylon instead of Mario and I would be surprised if we take 12 players in the draft. Really good read though.

I was toying with the idea of Braylon. He would be cheaper, and already has a chemistry with Sanchez. His injuries last year, really hampered him in SF. As long as there aren’t any lingering problems with injuries, I could sign on with Braylon also.

Good Job
The only thing is the double dip at RB. IMO if were going to double dip twice go after a SAF. Collins at the RT I’m kind of eh’ maybe, maybe not. I just think we could do better.
RT is a mystery right now
Since we didn’t cut Hunter, it seems that Tanny is willing to give him another shot in 2012. Maybe he thinks a proper offseason will do wonders for him.
A decent RT will probably be cut at some point this offseason. If we haven’t committed to someone by then, we would be wise to pick whoever it is up.

I do know that Hunters ceiling has been reached he will not get any better

It seems Tanny/Rex are having a hard time coming to terms with that

Levy Adcock
If you worked him in somewhere, and Christian Thompson FS South Carolina St. instead of Dunbar as a compensatory I’d fall in love with this draft.

I’m actually working on a “Potential Jets” on Anthony Collins. We’re of the same mind on signing him.

He sort of reminds me of Hunter before last year
He was very solid when called upon in relief.

im not sure about braylon
He had a terrible year . What about drafting gerrel Robinson?
In the 4th or 5th round

I believe his horrible year had more to do with injuries and being in a new system with a whacky training camp.

it can just be your wish
No way sanchez, d’brick, and cromartie are taking pay cuts just not goin to happen sanchez is still our qb. D’Brick signed a fair contract for a LT he’s not taking a paycut. And cromartie just not only signed his contract but he did hold up well in coverage most this season so no way he takes a pay cut

Agreed.
I’ve done similar math myself. If you eliminate the savings for Sanchez, Ferguson and Cromartie, and add back in Hunter, who they are now on the hook for 2.5 million, unless they renegotiated something before yesterday’s deadline but didn’t announce, you have 7.3 million in freed cap space, on top of the 8 million carryover from this year, which we keep as a credit. So you have about 15.3 million in cap space for 2012. I think the draft and undrafted FA’s are going to cost us more like $6 million total, leaving us $9 million to resign the free agents we want to keep from 2011 and add new ones. That’s not a lot.
I’ve said in other threads that Sanchez is the key. Ferguson and Cromartie just signed new contracts that are fair market value and they are not going to renegotiate them. But Sanchez is going into this season as a highly overpaid starter. Joe Flacco is making about 6.5 million in the last year of his rookie contract, and some would argue that’s too much for him. Sanchez already renegotiated his contract once to free up money to sign Revis 2 years ago. With two years left on his deal, there are really only three ways to go here, since I think an extension right now to help spread out the remainder of his rookie deal would be asinine – status quo, 5-6 million dollar pay cut, trade/release him.

all looks good except...
I doubt we sign Braylon for only 800k , unless that would just be the cap hit and he is actually getting alot more than that in a bonus or gaurenteed money up front.

Very Good read
Thanks for accumulating this.
IMO as much as I like (his boy) McElroy (sung to the Jetsons theme song tune), It would be irresponsible for our beloved to go into next season without a legitimate, seasoned, games under his belt, backup QB. The only way we could do that is if (his boy) McElroy is the 2nd coming of the QB from the evil up north. And since we don’t know that, we’ve got to get a vet.
Not high on the picking a RB in the 2nd. Think we need a RT more, even if we sign Collins.
Smith & maybe Leonard may also need to be gone.
I know I'm human, and that's my greatest weakness. But, I never let it stop me, and that's my greatest strength. - Frank Castle
I am fine with Smith
as long as it is in a backup role. I think what the Jets really want is Sanchez to be pushed. Who better to push him than the young upstart McElroy. He had a great preseason, and had picked up the offense very quickly. If he has another strong camp and preseason, I don’t see why he can’t be the guy to push Sanchez. I also had us drafting Austin Davis to compete for that spot also.
It looks as if Hunter will be on our team in 2012. I don’t know if it will be as a starter or a backup. Either way, if we bring in a vet RT, we would have 4 OTackles. To draft another one in the early rounds would be overkill and irresponsible.
The offense needs a playmaker. Doug Martin would be that back.

dont agree with it
I dont think we should sign any of the free agents we have, aside from Maybin. I would like to see if Maybin, turns into a dominant player under Rex Ryan, I love Pouha but he is in the wrong side of 30 and he is probably going to want top buck after the great season he had. I love Jimmy, great player but his body cant withstand the intensity of his game
Your Best Yet
I don’t understand how Tanny can possibly clear that much cap space without screwing up the cap down the road. I know this is a “wish” list and I too wish he could create that much money to work with, but will be shocked beyond words if he can. You also didn’t use all that cap money I don’t think. I’m not sure how much it will cost to sign the rookies. If there is any space left, then I’d want Lowery back.
Brick had an offseason, but why would he give that much money back? What exactly does “rework” mean? Mark may be willing to give some money back, but that’s almost 50%. Again, I’ll be shocked beyond words if that were to happen. Why cut Gerald Alexander? What would be gained by that?
I also can’t imagine where that “unforseen” $2.8 million will come from. I just don’t think it’s possible.
I don’t know anything about Anthony Collins or Steven Hauschka, but it would be hard for Collins not to be an upgrade over Hunter. Both sure are cheap. Are they any good?
With regard to the FS position, E. Smith is NOT a FS. He is a SS if anything. Some would say he isn’t a safety at all, but a LB tweener. LOL! In that scenario, I think it would be better to just cut /not re-sign Smith and keep Alexander. He would make a better FS than Smith and would save $.7 million or so on the cap. Better yet, re-sign Dwight Lowery as a FA and let him be the backup FS and nickel corner.
I’d really like the top half of that draft except S. Hill. I just think there are better WRs in the draft than Hill. I don’t like his hands at all. That’s also too high to draft a project. I don’t know anything about the QB or the lower round players, but am not sure I’d take a QB there or if at all. I’d rather take an OT before the 6th round. Maybe an OT or a QB like Cousins in round 3 instead of Hill, and then an OT in round 5.
It’s hard to quibble over 7th round picks, but don’t think we’d need another RB or DT/DE. I’d rather draft a K an OG or another DB prospect. I like drafting a punter.
Overall, a good job and interesting read. Thanks!
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years." Alexander Tyler
Fantastic
A lot of low-risk high reward guys. Love our offseason to go this way. Hill has good upside coming from an option offenses, couldn’t really showcase himself. I think George Iloka will be the best safety in the draft.
Grabbed nice players at RB and OLB.
FA"s Kicker and more....
I’m not sure who your kicker is but I noted today that we worked out Justin Medlock. He spent the last 3 years up here in Canada playing in the CFL. He had a couple of coffee stops with the NFL starting with KC and so on. He’s 28 yr. old and former UCLA grad.
Last yr. he was.49 – 55 in FG -.89.1% efficiency. So just another apple in the barrel to choose from. You drafted a punter…why not a Kicker to boot as well(no pun intended). Let’s get a Special Team in place for a decade.
As per JoeK’s comments on WR in 3rd round…..not sure that’s my pick of the crop either. For sentimental reasons and athletic reasons I do like Al Toon’s son but we might be stretching him at our position in the 3rd. So I’d be inclined to be doing the coin flip for BPA at OL or ILB/OLB/ or anywhere along Defensive front. I just think we may never have enough depth and we may need the insurance if we lose Ellis due to his legal troubles.
Eric Smith is not a #2 on this team. If I see that Tebow replay of us in Denver one more time I’ll puke on the person next to me. That should be more than enough to say au revoir Mr. Smith. I like JoeK’s and so many other GGN poster recommendations to retrieve Dwight Lowery to fill that spot and be our Nickel corner. He proved he could handle those roles.
Very interesting analysis and worthy read
