There goes that.

Not surprised, I figured Haley's ego was too big to be a pass game coordinator or a position coach
He wants to run his own offense, and I suppose deservedly so.
Man there goes stockpiling ever ex HC under the sun...
I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings. I came here to win, let's put it that way. ... I'm certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else. Rex Ryan
Not at all surprised. Also kind of annoyed that Pittsburgh now has him.
He’s got quite an ego on him. And I guess deservedly so, given his track record. Well, apart from as a head coach. I really think he had quite a raw deal this year though losing his best offensive player and one of his top 3 best defensive players at the beginning of the year. I think he’ll learn and have another head coaching job before long.
And man the implications for the Steelers… Ffffffffuuuuuu— No seriously, that WR corps in his hands? With a capable QB and RB? Can you say “probably better than the ’08 Cardinals”? MDGeekyGirl should be really excited right about now lol.

For what it’s worth, the Steelers are projected to be $29M over the cap. They have an aging defense that’s slow and getting slower. They just got rocked by the Broncos. I wouldn’t expect the world of them.

I imagine a lot of their vets will be cap casualties
Guys like Hampton, Smith, Farrior, McFadden will all be sent packing, and outside of Smith none of them really contribute above replacement level. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hampton cut then resigned at a very low salary. With those edge rushers, Polamalu, and LeBeau I wouldn’t be too worried about the D if I were a Steelers fan, beyond those guys they are a plug and play machine.

I wasn't going to say anything at first but yeah I am a little excited
For what it’s worth, I would’ve been happier if he signed on with the Jets. Not sure how Haley and Ben will get along.

So…
You are a Jets fan AND a Steeler fan…?
I am a Jets fan and a Ravens fan.

Oh snap
It’s on now….I guess I don’t have to tell you how I feel about the Ravens.

I think I can figure it out.
Actually, my former roommate is a huge Steelers fan. We engage in much trash talking over the course of the season, and when we watch the game together she’d be decked out in her finest Polamalu while I wear my Ray Lewis. There is much glaring.

Thats why they are the Steelers
and we are the Jets. We take Sparano from the Dolphins and they hire a top notch guy in Haley. With the news that we are likely keeping Cavanagh I call this new offensive staff a major disappointment.
I don't understand how Haley > Sparano.
They ran a great offense together and SPARANO was the one calling the plays. Sparano didn’t do any worse than Haley as a head coach and he had to deal with a far more dysfunctional organization.
Also, I think Sparano’s attitude and ethic fill a much bigger void than Haley’s.
Because Haley had continued success in Arizona while Sparano got replaced right away by Jason Garrett
Although I’m not sure how much of Haley’s success is being a great coordinator vs. being handed the keys to a Ferrari like that Cardinals offense. I think I could be pretty successful if I had Kurt Warner throwing to Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston.

I’m so torn on the Sparano/Haley debate. Haley has the better resume but I like Sparano’s attitude and so far he’s saying all the right things. Also if you think about it the Chiefs didn’t have a winning season until Weiss started calling plays and Haley also had Wiz as his HC in AZ to help him out with play calling duties.

I think it comes down to that. Sparano took some pretty untalented Dolphin teams and made them play hard week in and week out. Haley was did just as much, but with way more talent.

dammit.
I wanted Haley for the OC job.
Can’t say I blame hi. Though. I think 9/10 people would rather work/play for Mike Tomlin than Rex Ryan.

I'd guess it'd be pretty close

Same here.
Mike Tomlin is a figurehead just like Rex. He doesn’t make any hiring and firing decisions and he doesn’t have Rexy’s coaching resume.

you're right
But its still Ryan’s/Tomlins word that’s final. And Ryan has put a lot of unnecessary pressure on himself and the coaching staff. Thats my point even though im a Rex fan.
by nyj-nyy-nyk on Feb 6, 2012 7:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
he also won a super bowl as a head coach.
by nyj-nyy-nyk on Feb 6, 2012 7:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
It's not so much Rex vs. Tomlin as it is best organization in the NFL vs. one that isn't the best
All things considered, if I was a coach I would choose Pittsburgh over anywhere. Low key, loyal, family-centric, best run franchise in the league who wins yearly.

Guys, i'm gonna throw this little stat out there that may change everyone's opinion on Haley
When he was Zona’s OC, the year that they got to the superbowl, they were LAST in the league in rushing yards, with a little over 1100. We need to be able to run the ball, that’s what we’re built to do. We’re not a high flying passing attack team, so hiring Haley as an OC really wouldn’t make sense.
+1
This is the truth. While I think that Haley is a more innovative offensive mind and has had better passing offenses the jets need to coach to their identity. Rex wants to keep at the ground and pound and Sparano is better for that than Haley. If we wanted to change to a high powered passing game, it would make sense to go with Haley as an OC and forget Sparano. We would also have to change some of our players (at least Sanchez would have to go and bring in more WRs). The playoffs has taught us that strong defenses andrunning games can win in this league so I say we keep our identity and build on what we have.
While I also thought it may have been nice to have Haley as a QB coach for Sanchez, it would have probably been a bad idea. Too many cooks would have spoiled the soup and too many HCs involve too many egos to handle on one staff IMHO.
Chiefs were 11th and 1st in rushing the past 2 years
You coach to your talent. In AZ that wasn’t the run game. That said, we could use an innovative guy to help the pass game. Ground and pound doesn’t win anymore.
by J-Nasty on Feb 6, 2012 9:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
i disagree
I don’t know why you would say ground and pound does not win anymore. The Ravens and the 49ers both used it well and either of them could have been in the superbowl this year. we used it to get to the afc championship game the last two years.
Good coaches coach to their talent but some will always go with what they know. I would like to open up the pass game but I do not think we have the personnel for a high powered passing offense at the moment.
Haley over Sparano
I far prefer haley over Sparano but I guess we will see next season. The bigger issue for us is that Sparano has little to no experience working with QBs and it looks like we are keeping Cavanagh.
I dont think its gonna matter much who the OC is if we dont have a good coach working with Sanchez. According to Cimini, Rex wants to keep Cavanagh and Sparano wants to bring in Karl Dorrell who was his QB coach in Miami last season. I dont think either of these guys are what we need in a QB coach and Sanchez is just not gonna improve enough unless he gets the right coaching.
Whether you believe in Sanchez like I do or not I dont think anyone believes that he was well coached by either Schotty or Cavanagh. I just find it unfathomable that rex would keep this guy. When the likes of Steve Young, Trent Dilfer, Phil Simms and Rich Gannon have all pointed out how poorly coached Sanchez was I find it incredible that Rex and Tanny would allow Cavanagh to be kept around.
As for Rex speaking with Steve Young thats all well and good but I am pretty certain that Young told Rex that Sanchez needs better coaching because he has said it numerous times on the air. If rex is so incredibly stubborn that he is keeping Cavanagh when a guy like Hue Jackson is available it really does not bode well for this teams future.
not to sound mean
but you basically say the same thing in every comment regarding this subject. i think we get the point by now
also, Karl Dorell probably isn't as bad as most of us think
he turned Matt Moore into a pretty solid quarterback despite him not being too physically gifted.
QB coach
and henne was not too bad either before he got hurt. I would, however, like the Jets to really find someone better than cavanaugh for sanchez. I think they are looking and just keeping cav in limbo right now.
Cav said he expects to be fired
it’s really not fair to keep him in limbo, but rex and tony are arguing over keeping “their guys”. We’ll see what happens, but i have a feeling Cav won’t be back. We’ve dumped so much of our offensive coaching staff as it is, why stop at Quarterback Coach? I’d say the only remaining offensive position coach that’s a lock to return is Anthony Lynn.
I think they were waiting until after the Super Bowl.
Woody is having dinners with Sanchez and Ryan. I have a feeling that what transpires at these meetings is going to go a long way to determining Sanchez’s future with the Jets. Once they decide what they are going to do with him, then they will move on with the QB coach and then take whatever other steps they have agreed on. I think there are going to be a lot more changes in this team and organization than people think. The Giants Super Bowl win is going to push Woody into taking even bigger steps than the Favre move.

I really hope we don't make some ludicrous blockbuster move
Those never work out, and it’d move us a couple of steps back as an organization, after we’ve taken some great leaps forward the last couple years. Yeah, this year wasn’t good, but I think it’s moreso an aberration from the last two. I don’t mind some major changes TO THE THINGS THAT ACTUALLY NEED TO BE CHANGED. Sorry for the caps, I tried to emphasize that. Anyway, the point is change may not be a bad thing, but the FO has to be careful.
I don't think we ever had a shot at Haley.
I think the talks he had with the Jets were exploratory and driven by his desire to work again with Sparano. But I don’t think they ever could have come to an agreement about the division of authority and responsibility, which is why I think both sides agreed not to pursue a marriage.
My question now is not just the QB but who is going to run the passing game. I’m going to indulge in some post-Super Bowl black fantasizing here, induced by and excess of alcohol. Cavanaugh stays it looks like he gets the title of passing game coordinator by default. That is not a positive, unless Rex and Tony plan on running the ball 50 times a game. And on that note, look for Trader Mike to trade up and get Richardson. Then, they go out an get Manning, who becomes the de facto OC and his own QB coach. This would really be a bad alignment of stars here. I need another drink.
I'm gonna scream if we trade up that much for a running back
That would be flat out stupid, and if it failed, Tanny would probably get shown the door.
Is a passing game coordinator a new title all of a sudden. I’ve been following football for almost 30 yrs and can’t remember ever hearing about that coaching position. Just stuck with one guy
by dawg1331 on Feb 6, 2012 8:48 PM EST via mobile reply actions
It's another assistant, like the quality control coach and all the other coaches added over the years.
I remember when QB’s had to man up and design their own game plans – during the game no less – and call the plays. That when football was played by men. We have more coaches on these teams than players.
by Traveling Man on Feb 6, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions
I know it’s pretty annoying. Just let Sparano run the O, get a new QB coach and that’s it.

Dorrell
has one year experience as a QB coach and before that he was a QR coach. He also played WR. I dont see how this guy has the experience neccessary to be a good QB coach. We need a coach with experience working with QBs which is why Rex needs to call Hue Jackson and give him the job of assistant head coach/QB coach.
Rex worked with Jackson in Baltimore and their were rumors that he wanted him as his OC when he first got the Jets job. Hopefully we are talking to Jackson as we speak because he has a ton of experience working with QBs.
WR coach
I meant to say that Dorrell was a WR and was a WR coach. Hiring him as a QB coach makes as much sense as when we had Carrier coaching the DLine.
Dorrell
was hired by Houston as their QB coach so unless Rex reaches out to Hue jackson we might be stuck with more Cavanagh.
