Top 30 Jets of 2011 #s 30-27
Its going to be a very long off season and I thought it would be interesting to go through the top 30 Jets of the past season. It will overall be a two week segment. The order is strictly based on my opinion and is open for debate.
And so it begins
#30Eric Smith 115 tackles 2.5 sacks 1 INT 1 Fumble recovery
Now I know he had one of the worst seasons a safety can possibly have, but he was second on the team in tackles, and for that he does get some respect.
#29
Nick Bellore Team high 31 Special teams tackles
Bellore didn't have much impact on defense but he was a great ST contributor. you cant discredit that.
#28
Tanner Purdam
What???? the long snapper? at 28? Yea I know you almost never here Purdam's name called. And that's the best part. If your Long snappers name is being called on a frequent basis then he must not be doing too good of a job. The fact that no one has heard Purdam's name called means hes doing what we need our long snapper to do.
#27
Brodney Pool 37 Tackles .5 sacks 1 int 4 PD 1 Fumble recovery
Pool didn't have a good season. He is considered a guy that goes after the ball, yet didn't have a int until the last game of the season. He did miss 3 games due to injury but its still not acceptable. In order for the Jets to improve in 2012 Pool has to step up or be sent to the bench.
# 26- 23 to come tomorrow
Let the debate begin

Good point on Tanner Purdum
He’s a solid player that never gets any attention.

eric smith
He is terrible in coverage, but your gonna put a guy like nick belore before him? Eric smith also plays special teams well. Also, he had the second most tackles on the team. (and two big missed tackles) all I’m saying is he should be ahead of any strictly special teamer.

I dont think Smith played too much ST this year bec he had 0 tackles on ST.

Why? Smith was a liability on the field.
Nick Bellore didn’t absolutely suck at his job.

i already alluded to his lack of coverage ability
but eric smith did well stopping the run. of course when i played football in elementary school, stopping the run was the safety’s 4th responsibility. 1. stop the pass, 2. stop the pass, 3. stop the pass, 4. stop the run. I think eric smith is too bad in coverage to be a safety, but too small to be a lb. he plays lb better
Eric Smith sucks
the end.

Eric Smith LED the team in tackles. Not second. Number 1.

He's a safety, and on this team that's saying next to nothing anyway

I don't know what you mean here but
leading your team in tackles means a few things… 1) You were on the field alot. 2) You can tackle pretty good.
The fact that he is a safety leading the team in tackles, means, either the front seven sucks or he was playing up in the front seven alot.
Eric Smith is not nearly as bad as some to make him out to be. He definitely could have been put in better situations to succeed. Like every other year he played for the Jets where few said he sucked.

Actually as clean up guy, the Safety quite frequently is a leading tackler, sometimes LB
and yes, it means he saw a lot of field time. Which is an indictment on Rex.
What I “meant here” is that this team is horrible at tackling as I said, and leading is no great feat.
I’d have pulled down game film of his blown plays this season but it’s been so prolific and unanimously bad that I never thought I would have to.

well
having a lot of tackles doesn’t mean your a good player. you might have a lot of tackles based on the fact that they throw in your direction a lot. You might tackle him, but you can’t cover him. Smith is a decent tackler, but he can’t cover, and thats why they always throw at him.

And how long should it take a coaching staff to realize that a guy can't man cover
Before they attempt another approach? They have had three years with him. They should have known by then that he has limitations. Or he was injured and they had no one else to fill in. Either way, I still think Smith did a pretty good job despite the situation.

Its Smith with at total of 89 and 66 solo vs Harris with a total of 86 and 65 solo. I think nyjets.com has the same stats too.

Bellore is underrated ST player. wish he could develop into something defensively.
Also great call on the long snapper. you never hear the guys name unless he screws up.
