how to fix the nyjets pass rush without spending big

with the pass rush situation the jets have, i have a solution. araon maybin was awesome, and paired with another good pass rusher would definelty help. we don't need one great one, maybe we need two good ones. also, the second pass rusher could be on the d-line, wilkerson perhaps, or someone else. for the pass rushers, it could be maybin, or someone from the draft. then, we could spend money on other positions, like safety.

We need another pass-rushing OLB, there is no getting around it.

Wow, short fanpost

Maybin’s a little too small to be a designated primary pass rusher, but he’d be very good if complemented with a true pass rushing OLB, which is why i say we draft one in either the 1st or 2nd.

how is maybin too small

Yea he’s a little lite but at 6’4’’ 240lbs he’s the ideal size

by Nu York Fan on Feb 21, 2012 1:56 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

He is listed at 228 lbs on ESPN

And all reports say he can’t keep weight on.

by CervezaVerde on Feb 21, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, he’s not 240. I’d be surprised if he’s even 225.

Bad Idea

I suggest re-thinking this. To begin with, in Rex’s system the DE’s don’t pressure the QBs much. Maybe this will change as Wilkerson has the ability to do that, and if Ellis takes over for Pouha at some point, the Jets should get most push up the pocket. That’s as far as your thinking can take you.

Maybin isn’t an every down OLB. Do you think other teams are gonna make it nice and neat for the Jets and only pass on 3rd and long? If so, then I suggest joining the real world.

The reason the Jets get killed by even average TEs over the middle is that the Jets get very little consistent pressure. Remember that the idea isn’t to just get sacks. It’s to hit, harry and force the QB into rushing his throws so that hopefully, he will throw a lot of interceptions. Maybin can only get sacks when the QB stands back there too long. Too many opposing QBs have 7-10 seconds to find a receiver, and any NFL level QB can pick apart a D when he gets that much time.

Hopefully, Maybin will get bigger and stronger and be able to become a 3-down LB, but I’m not holding my breath on that and professional teams can’t “hope” that something like that will happen. They have to take the necessary steps to insure that they get a dynamic pass rush. The only real way for the Jets to do that is through the draft. They absolutely MUST take the best pass-rushing OLB prospect they can get in the first round, then they must take at least one more, the earlier the better. If two more fall into their laps, then all the better. The Jets backups at OLB are no great shakes, either. Thomas is gone. Pace will be gone after this season. The Jets are gonna need two new starters at OLB and competent backups.

With Rex’s skills as a DC/defensive mind, if he finally gets two real playmakers at the most important position in his defense, he can create real havoc for opponents and opposing QBs, and the Jets will start becoming the type of team we want them to be.

Youi don’t scrimp and save or take the cheap route at the most important position on your D, and that’s what the Jets have tried to do. They have tried to win with two slow starting OLBs, who can’t get to the QB with any regularity, generate any real pressure or even drop into coverage effectively. All they can do is play the run and set the edge.

With an NT that can penetrate and push the pocket, with Wilkerson supplying pressure and with two fast OLBs who can get to the QB, along with some exotic blitzes mixed in occassionally, the Jets can finally and truly generate REAL pressure on opposing QBs, and that will do more than anything else to make the Jets more effective vs the pass.

I’d rather have a D that’s in the top 5 vs the pass than the run, since the NFL is a passing league now. If they can shut down opponent’s passing games, and force them to run, the Jets’ D can start pitching shutouts and even with mediocre play from Sanchez, they will win consistently.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. I agree

Getting an every down pass rushing OLB is our highest priority and there’s no other way to go about it. When you have someone like that who is truly disruptive, it improves the play of your entire defensive front. No other need comes close to this for our team.

+1.....

I hated it in both the AFC Championship games when both Peyton & Big Ben had tons of time to survey the field and then pass the ball. We just couldn’t hold cover that long and it finally wore us down. WE do need to have a “Fearsome Foursome”…2 OLBs and a NT + 1 DL should do the trick. So build it right…..we’re half way there and while we’re at it grab another ILB to take-over for Bart Scott and we’ll be devastating on D. That’s provided we’ve grabbed those 2 A+ Safeties along the way.

Somebody got a FanPost mixed up with a FanShot...

MARK SANCHEZ HAD BETTER STATS THAN TEBOW.

So either Sanchez is better than " second coming " or you have to admit that Tebow is no good.

Maybin is a one dimensional one trick pony

Sure he ran that one trick well 6 times last year, but thats it. 6 times. We need an every down player.
