Potential FA Safeties
As stated in my Potential FA OTs post, I scanned the list of free agents on every team to try to find possible safety upgrades for the Jets. Again, since I don't follow other teams, I don't know much or anything about many of these players. I was surprised at some of their stats as I had never even heard of them. Please chip in with your comments and vote in the poll. Some will be more expensive than others, but some may be fairly cheap, yet would be a definite upgrade over E. Smith, Pool or Leonard in coverage.
Info following the jump. I've listed the players I think will be the best, but probably the most expensive first.

COMMENTS: I don't know if the Jets can sign any of the top 4 as they may all be too expensive. Page, Gregory or Branch may be their best options, and Gregory and Branch are NY natives. Elam is said to be a liability in coverage, but he makes a lot of tackles and big plays.

Not True At All
What’s Tyvon Branch done that makes him so great? His stats are pedestrian.

Agreed, Griffin is the real prize.
Griffin seems to be definitely leaving Tennessee, and Goldston appears to be staying in SF. Tyvon isn’t a bad Safety but he has never proven himself to be a great. Considering all the teams in need of a Safety and the crop in this year’s draft, Branch will probably get overpaid.
It is what it is
Branch is pretty good at reading qbs, he’s an above average tackler, a ball-hawk in the making and most importantly, he can cover.
Might just be one of the most underrated FAs, imo.

There both good....
Branch is 2 yrs’s younger and 1 yr. less playing time. But his stats are probably a little better is they were pro-rated. He is definitely around the ball which is what you want. You don’t want a “Shy” Safety. As I mentioned in the “OT” post he was given special praise for his work by the Oakland reviewers. Previously noted above..Coverage Skills…..something we haven’t seen alot of until about 20+ yds after the catch for our safeties.
I think we go 2 prong here Griffin & Branch and first bite wins but it has to be fast.

Pats will also be in FA-market for a Safety and
will have far more capspace to play with. I think they’re going to lockup Michael Griffin as they desperately want a skilled vet Fast Safety for their very young secondary and can afford him. It doesn’t look like the answer for that will be in this year’s draft except as a longer-term project.
It is what it is
Don't even think like that.
We don’t need the Pats getting this year’s best FA safety. I hope he’d rather play with Revis and Cro and make a star-studded secondary to pair with whatever pass-rushing dynamo we draft this year. Puck the Fats.

Why not
just bring back lowery and pair him with pool? that was an excellent combination down the stretch in 2010. That instantly injects athleticism at both positions. I know brodney was a little inconsistent at times, but I think being a starter continuously and giving him some special attention could make him return to form. Bring Braylon back and then we could double dip on both OLB and RT.
I'm All For Bringing Lowery Back
But think Pool is only depth. I’ve never seen him play well.

+1 and 1 Question
JoeK will you be doing these position by position needs for all of the Teams?
Just kidding !!!!!!!!
Seriously, just to jump on Crack’s compliment. Another great post full of good info on FA Safeties and can’t wait for the next one.
Also….I’ll put my hand into the pot with those that wish to bring Dwight Lowery back for depth and to hold a shovel to bury Eric Smith once and for all.

Branch and Lowery its a no brainer
Branch is still very young and has started to improve in his coverage skills plus he is fast as hell: D-Lo is versatile he would be great for disguising the coverage, is he playing FS or is he playing CB. Then in the draft take 2 late round prospects like McCray and Thompson. The Jets first should be Ingram with that Hamilton kid that CB dubbed “The Natural” you have the makings for a very confusing D.

Lowery is SS for the Jags right now
really we could disguise him as anything.

I Don't Get That, Either
Lowery is not a SS. He’s not a play in the box, run-stopping S. He’s a coverage type safety. I noticed that with several teams. They seem to have it backwards.

Many teams have no choice, Lowery might be their best option in the Strong
on a team like the Jets he’d be in a different position, as we know.

I think its time to break the link. He’d be a great guy to coach these young guys as he is such a smart guy. But I think we need to get 2 FA’s and still draft another S this year. I like that George I. guy at Boise State.

Lowery & Branch-Affordable?
Both make sense if the $ are OK or Branch plus a draftee.
No mention of LaRon Landry or Dashon Goldson?
He’s only the best Safety on the market. Though personally i feel as if Landry, Griffin, and Branch may be too expensive for the Jets liking. Landry could be commanding up to $6 or $7 million per year and Griffin and Branch could be looking at $4 or $5 million per year.

Goldson is both expensive and dead set on returning to the 49ers
not impossible, but unlikely.

I Disagree
That Landry is the best. He’s inconsistent and can’t stay on the field. Evidently, Rex thinks the same way because they’ve had an opportunity twice now to sign him since Rex came to the Jets and unless something happened that didn’t get picked up by the media, there have been no offers made to Landry. I think Griffin is much better. Griffin, Nelson and Landry will probably be the most expensive. I don’t see why Branch should be that expensive. He may be up and coming, but his stats are still pretty meh. I don’t think he’ll command top $ until he has a stellar season.
I think Goldson is overrated, plus will be expensive.

There is not a Safety listed on there that is better than Landry.
Griffin is even more inconsistent. I also don’t think Nelson will be too expensive. At least not as expensive as Landry, Griffin, Branch, or Goldson.

I think you’re flat out wrong about Landry. Evidently, so does Rex.

How has Rex had an opportunity twice to sign someone that has never hit the market?
Are you confusing LaRon with his brother Dawan?
Guess I Must Be
LOL. Sorry, didn’t realize there were two of them.

Landry has injury issues
Obviously that’ll make him cheaper, but there’s obviously the issue of him getting injured. I guess it aint our call though.
Ranked in order of priority
1. Griffin
2. Zbikowski
3. Lowery
4. Branch
5. Abdullah
Whoever voted for Jarrad Page is either scrod in the head or a Patriots fan.

Why Do You Say That?
What’s wrong with Page? As I said earlier, I don’t know anything about him, but his stats are pretty decent, and he probably won’t cost that much.
Besides, with your putting Zbikowski second on your list, I’d be careful with telling others that they’re “nuts” or whatever “scrod in the head means.” The only S FA possibly worse than Zbikowski is Abram Elam.
Griffin, Nelson, Jones, & Goldson are all waaay better than Zbikowski.

Abram Elam is actually much better than Zbikowski
He’s older and his first go in NY was comical, but he’s turned into an at least league average safety since Cleveland. Zbi has yet to show you he can even be a quality starter.
Page....I don't think so....
First of……he’s headed to his 5th team now. Flamed out in KC, couldn’t make do with little Bill up in NE, a 1/3 season in both Philly & Minnesota last year. Not exactly world beating. Vikes secondary was one of those great ones……. to throw against. Eric Smith would be All World in that secondary. Just saying. WE don’t want him JoeK.
Bring back Lowery. Add on Branch and if we can Griffin or Nelson.

OK Thanks
As I said, I knew nothing about him, but his stats weren’t bad and he looked like he’d be cheap. Scratch him off the list.

Fix the pass rush!
Most of these guys would be nice players. I would like to see Lowery brought back—if he’d be willing. I’d like to see Branch—if the deal is right, but not if we have to overpay.
I’d like our depth to come from the later orunds of the draft—I’m not that thrilled with the available projected first and second-rounders, but I could live with the later picks used to shore up this position.
We don’t need a home run at safety. Smart, small signings and depth from young and cheap, low-risk draft picks should be the way the FO thinks.
The point is—fix the pass rush and the safety play will improve, even if we updgrade only marginally at the position itself.
I Agree
but the pass rush is going to have to be improved via the draft. Conversely, the S position should be improved through FA. There are very good FA safeties available and all the prospects are iffy. You also need experienced S play. I think the Jets should sign one, or if possible two FA safeties and also draft one somewhere in the middle or lower rounds like Winston Guy or Trumaine Johnson.

Bang on....
In your last wish there ( grab 2 S’s in FA and draft a S i.e. W.Guy or T. Johnson ). In a lot of the Mocks that I have seen so far for the Jets if we haven’t drafted George Ilota from Boise State in the 4th Round then we’re picking up T.Johnson in the next or with one of our 6th pics.
Agree on Pass Rush answer…..

I'm going to assume that Griffin and Nelson are out of our price range, in which case I vote for Tyvon Branch
Closes quickly, converted corner, tackles well, and might be the fastest safety in the league.
go for griffin
branch would be good too but it looks like the raiders will throw a lot of money his way to keep him. I would also consider elam and lowery on the cheap as they would know the D and be able to start right away.
