Solving The Pass Coverage

Looking into the draft im starting to lean further and further to trading down. At 16 the Jets could go and draft a Nick Perry or a Melvin Ingram which could help the need of an OLB. We could end up with a value top 10 talent that falls for whatever reason that being Devon Still, Trent Richardson, Dre Kirkpatrick, Quinton Coples or whoever but the best way to build our team thro the draft will be to trade down untill the bottom of the 1st and target South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore.

At 6'1 he has the size but more inportantly he has the talent, he makes quarterbacks pay for poor throws with centerfielder-like instincts and hands. He's Quiet, hard-working player who consistently gets praises from coaches and teammates about his work ethic and attitude. Puts in time in the film room, knows his opponents and defensive scheme inside and out. No worries about on-field effort, brings tenacious attitude on every play. By getting a talent like Stephon Gilmore to place as our FS by trading back would leave us very flexible to either pick up another SS or go get a later pass rushing option weaather it be Jonathan Massaquoi, Bruce Irvin, possibly Vinny Curry. But the next issue we come across is that we cant cover from the linebacker position but there is a late round guy that has lined up at both DE and OLB and was used in college to cover the other team's TEs adding Kyle Wilber in a later round combined with Stephon Gilmore will help shut other offense's down. Kyle Wilber from Wake Forest is a 6'4'' 240lb DE/OLB who was named to CBS Sports's top 10 players who helped themseleves at the East West Shrine game, can be the perfect project as an OLB or even ILB. He is not a great edge rusher but does the frame and long arms to be built up and as a projected 5th round pick he could be well worth his value if he can help neutralize a TE when the Jets get destroyed by good TEs. Thanks For the Suggestions

I’ll check into these players, but at first glance, must admit I’m not very excited about their prospects. In general, you don’t take a S in the first round unless he has Ed Reed type potential. There have been very few of those types.

I live within 20 miles of Wake Forest and have never heard of that kid. I can tell you that Wake wasn’t very good this year, and it was usually their D that collapsed late in games, so he is immediately suspect.

The other thing is that pass rushers go quickly. You can’t draft two safeties with your first two picks and then hope to get one of the prime prospects. If you think you’ve uncovered a “gem” that is likely to go in the 3rd or 4th round that you have rated as highly as one of the 1st round OLBs, then ok, but there’s always the chance that someone else will have discovered that “gem” too.

The bottom line is this. It doesn’t matter one whit how good you DBs are. If NFL QBs have 5-10 seconds to find a target, they will and they will pick you apart. Even the best DBs can only stay with their receivers for 2-3 seconds at most. The only REAL way that the Jets are gonna improve their coverage vs TEs is to develop a real and consistent pass rush. It especially isn’t gonna happen with a LB dropping into coverage. That may help, but it’s not the primary means of addressing the issue.

Agree 100%

The question is when are the Jets (specificaly Rex) going to realize that. They were willing to sign Asomugha for big bucks when that would have added minimum added benefit over Cro yet would have crippled the team from a cap standpoint. I am very worried that the Jets still haven’t figured out they have to get a good pass rush (DRAFT! DRAFT!!!) from their front seven to beat the Brady’s of the NFL.

You're Not the Only One

I don’t know if it’s Rex, Tanny or Woody, but my guess would have to be the latter two. After all, Rex’s brother Rob said this about OLBs:

“If you’re going to play a 3-4 defense and don’t have outside backers, you don’t have a defense,” said 3-4 expert Rob Ryan. “You’ve got to be able to set the edge and rush a passer. It starts with them. They’ve got to be playmakers. That’s what you get in a 3-4.”

While I don’t think that Rex is the sharpest pencil in the box, he’s not THAT dull. He has a very astute defensive mind. He had Terrell Suggs and Adalius Thomas in Baltimore. It has to be on Tanny wanting to make a big splash for his ego or Woody telling him to make big splashes to get the Jets in the news and to sell PSLs.

I agree, and I think another problem has been the "win now" mentality of all three of them.

Hopefully, they step back and say “OK, time to turn some positions over and build on what we have.” The 2011 Jets were probably not really only a few players or another superstar away from the Super Bowl, but that was the hand, they played it, and they lost. It reminded me an awful lot of Herm’s last year.

These guys have fixable problems. The draft and FA line up nicely for the Jets to adequately fill their needs and improve. Despite what the national media reports, they don’t need to blow up the team. They don’t need to make a bunch of dramatic signings. Like you guys, I hope they realize these things, check their egos and presumptions at the door, and get to work.

And the lockout didn't help, either.

When you already think you are thisclose and you don’t have a full training camp to see disconfirming evidence (“Wow, he’s slower than last year.” “We can’t cover TEs.” “He’s not ready to start.” etc.) , your gonna stick with guys you know and try to add that one big piece.

by jkoyon on Feb 12, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, But the Thing Is...

that Tanny didn’t stick with the guys he knew. He allowed close to 1/4 of the team to leave in FA. That was a HUGE part of the problem that too many Jets fans seem to be ignoring. It was a TOTALLY stupid thing to do in a strike-shortened year. If ever there was a time to stick with guys you knew, and only make a few changes, last year was the year to do that, and they didn’t.

Also, there was plenty of evidence by the 2nd or 3rd preseason game that the Jets could be in trouble with their OL with Turner probably gone for the season and Hunter struggling mightily, and Ducasse showing no signs of being even close to being ready. There were solid FAs available to sign and the Jets had cap space and didn’t. Plug Gurode in for Mangold for those 3 games, and the Jets were probably in the playoffs. Plug almost any OT in the NFL in Hunter’s place and they’re probably in the playoffs.

There were gross miscalculations and egos (or blindness) run amok among the CS and FO last season imo.
