Jamaal Westerman Undergoes Groin Surgery

OLB Jamaal Westerman, Rex's "designated pass rusher," just underwent surgery in the past two weeks over a torn groin, according to Jenny Vrentas. Westerman played all 16 games with the tear, not realizing the severity of it until after the season was over. Westerman recorded 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Perhaps this helps explain why Westerman was not able to develop into the pass rushing force that Rex had initially declared him to be. These kinds of injuries happen all the time, however, so I don't believe there is too much to read into it. Westerman is a restricted free agent now, so it will be interesting to see how the team deals with him after the poor season he had.

I thought when he sacked Brady twice in the first Pats game he arrived

I was wrong, however, hate to give him the boot only to find his lack of production was due to this injury.

Well shoot

Now I’ll be nervous about seeing him go. I really doubt he’ll light the world up elsewhere but now there’s that 5% of me that’s all “BUT WHAT IF!!!!”. Hopefully we can give him the lowest tender and nobody bites (assuming restricted free agency rules are still the same).

Actually about RFAs—are the rules the same as they were? I thought that after just 3 years of service now you become unrestricted instead of 4…?

still 4 I think.

Hm

I wonder what he could’ve done without this injury. I still want an OLB

wow

he had some good games with a pulled groin. imagine next year with a (wow) repaired groin, how good he can be. if the operation goes well, we can start making westerman groin jokes. it’s a win-win.

Still draft a pass rusher or two.

Let's Make sure we play like the f***in NEW YORK JETS
and not some f***in slapd**k team!

still say an upgrade is needed at OLB. Maybe him and maybin can split time on the other side of the defense if we get one OLB

thats awful

I never came here to kiss Bill Belichick's rings. I came here to win, let's put it that way. ... I'm certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else. Rex Ryan

Rex really liked him during training camp

wouldn’t be surprised if this means we hold off on a pass rusher in the first round now.

Huh?

Pace will still be gone in another year. Until Westermann actually plays at a high level in the season, there is still a hole at Thomas’ spot. This shouldn’t change anything.

it shouldn't

but who knows. we went 3 years without drafting one, even though it was apparent we needed one

well I think he should be offered back….good depth for us at the OLB..knows the system…hopefully a fully repaired unit will be in fine form for us in 2012!

I Think He Should Be Brought Back

but that shouldn’t affect the draft one iota. He’s brought back for depth and insurance in case the rookie struggles. I don’t think Thomas should be brought back, but think he probably will be.

I Think That Was Due to a Combination of Factors

1. Tanny really doesn’t know how to build a team;
2. Until last year, they weren’t in a position to be able to draft a really good prospect. I think they would have last year, but when Ellis fell to them, he was just too good a prospect to turn down;
3. Rex’ man crush on CBs.

I’ve been getting nauseous the last few days every time I come onto this site. I realize the site needs to make ad money, but I hope they can find it elsewhere.

I wonder if he tore his groin when...

he did his first nutsack dance after his first sack this year, i remeber thats all the cameramen showed was Westerman humping air and pointing at his nuts, maybe he was trying to tell the doctors his shit just tore :)

the guy is a warrior and played his entire senior season at rutgers with a torn bicep. his ceiling is not super high but he is certainly a serviceable player when healthy. get well soon westy.

serviceable is the right view point

situational guy—adequate back up, not Wayne Hunter adequate, REALLY actually adequate.
I hope he’s back.
