In the Gloaming

So here we are, in the twilight of another Jets season that ended with more losses on our record than the talent warranted. The pill we're left to swallow is thick, chalky and has an aftertaste as bitter as the hoppiest IPA that has ever soaked your throat. And, unfortunately, it has probably taken a few IPAs with double-digit ABVs to stomach a full four quarters of the... "football" we force upon ourselves week after week. Forgive me for my craft brew parlance but I don't drink mainstream shit.

Anyways... here we are... in the gloaming. The only thing to look forward to, henceforth, are the youngins. Eliminated from playoff contention, it only makes sense to see what kind of motor the "developmental" guys have got. Its one thing to see the youngins during the pre-season, when they're matched up against other youngins. It quite another to see how they perform against trained professionals, who are playing for a contract or that are trying to keep a roster spot.

So... why is it the case that, mind you in an absolutely meaningless game, when I check the snaps played that I see that the youngins aren't getting any burn? Demario Davis gets 2 snaps; Bart Scott gets 40??? Calvin Pace gets 61 snaps (100%); while Garrett McIntyre gets only 43??? Soon to be free agent Laron Landry gets 100% of the snaps at safety; Josh Bush gets absolutely zero??? And Antonio Allen got 7 snaps??? Jordan White got only 3 snaps at WR???

What purpose does this serve? How about let Brandon Moore get an early vacation, and let Vlad Ducasse get a full game of reps in? Let Bart Scott heal up his toe (or just get get the hell out of town) and let Davis get meaningful reps in a real game situation. Let Calvin Pace get reps at NOT getting to the QB from the sideline, while McIntyre gets a full 100% snaps in every single situation of a game. Let Joe McKnight get more than 2 snaps, while Shonn Greene tries to make his way to the water-cooler without brushing up against somebody and immediately falling down. Maybe since Landry refuses to give the Jets a discount despite the fact that we took a huge risk on his achilles, maybe we should let Bush and/or Allen get a few of those live reps.

When these games don't matter in the grand scheme of a season, and the guys that are getting snaps have had upteen games and plenty of tape to prove their worth, we should be letting the youngins spread their wings. Give them a taste and let them go into the off-season with a real purpose. If anybody should be playing hurt, it should be Ellis with a barking knee (16 snaps) rather than Pouha with a bad back (19 snaps). Let the youngins play. Eff all these has-beens that wrecked this season.
