Disclaimer: There are no guarantees the Jets will be searching for a new general manager. Mike Tannenbaum has long been a favorite of Woody Johnson. Firing him would go against institutional philosophies of the Jets organization such as denying problems exist and standing by people who do their job poorly. Even so, there is a chance a change will be made so we would like to give you a head start on some of the names who might pop up.
Marc Ross is the Director of College Scouting for the New York Giants. Prior to working for the Giants, he also spent time in the Eagles and Bills organizations. While with the Eagles, he held the position of scouting director. The Giants' website claims he was behind the picks of Brian Westbrook, Lito Sheppard, and Derrick Burgess.
Ross came to the Giants in 2007. His first Draft was widely credited with stocking the Giants' Super Bowl team that year with talent. He found players like Steve Smith in the second round, Kevin Boss in the fifth, and Ahmad Bradshaw in the seventh. This NY Post article gives him credit for the Giants picking the likes of Jason Pierre-Paul and Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Terrell Thomas, Kenny Phillips, Linval Joseph, Will Beatty, Jonathan Goff and Jacquian Williams.
Ross is a hot name for general manager jobs. He interviewed for the Colts and Bears jobs last year and figures to get other looks this year.
If you want Rex Ryan gone, Ross would be an attractive candidate. I can almost promise you that if somebody from the Giants organization decides Rex's fate, he is finished.
I think he's worth considering. I think the talent on the Giants' roster is a bit overrated, covered by an elite quarterback. They haven't been a perfect drafting team either, but Ross seems to have done a pretty good job. The big thing to like is the organization he comes from. He is with a team where everybody is on the same page. There's a clear philosophy. The Giants make their selections to give their quarterback weapons and bolster their pass rush. When there's a project player like JPP, the front office and coaches get together and correctly assess whether this guy can be developed. There's no talk of being a ground and pound team and then picking a project wide receiver in the second round.
That's the big reason I think Ross might be tough to get. The Giants look down on the Jets. They view the organization as dysfunctional. Would Ross be willing to put his one chance to make it big on a team he hears nothing but bad things about? At the same time, it is one of only thirty-two such jobs in the world.
