Entering the draft, Coples was considered one of the best pass rushers in the draft. However, everyone expected Coples to go in the top 10, and the Jets would take either Melvin Ingram, or Chandler Jones. Well, what happened was that Seattle(picking at #15), chose Bruce Irvin. The Jets selected Quinton Coples, the Chargers selected Melvin Ingram, and the Patriots selected Chandler Jones.
Ever since, and throughout their careers, people will be comparing these 4 pass rushers, since they were all chosen in the first round. Some say Irvin is the best "natural" pass rusher, some say Coples doesnt have the work ethic, and there are alot more opinions. But lets see what the stats say.
Quinton Coples- During the 13 games the Coples played, Coples has 22 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 pass defense, and 5 stuffs. These kinds of number are ok- nothing special about them. Coples has shown the ability to be a very good pass rusher and run stuffer, but at the same he looks confused many of the times. But as time goes on, and Coples being more comfortable in Rex Ryan's system, expect him to be more consistent.
Chandler Jones- On the other hand, Jones has produced alot more than Quinton Coples. In 11 games, Jones has 36 tackles, 6 sacks, 3 pass defense and 3 stuffs, 3 forced fumbles. Obviosly, it seems as if Jones is the better player right now. But, this could be misleading because, Jones plays the OLB position, while Coples plays with his hand in the dirt. Since the Jets play a 3-4 its much harder for the linemen to get a sack. The Patriots system is also a 3-4, so it allows the LB's to put pressure.
Bruce Irvin- When Seattle selected Bruce Irvin at #15, everyone thought he was picked to high. Irvin is a very good pass rusher, but not as good in the run game. This could be seen in his stats. Through 13 games, Irvin has 13 tackles, 8 sacks, 0 forced fumbles, and 0 stuffs. Obviosly, Irvin is not good in the run game, but he is probably the best "pure" pass rusher out of all this prospects.
Melvin Ingram- Before the draft, there was alot of speculation that the Jets would draft Melvin Ingram. So, whem the Jets had to pick, Ingram, was available and everyone was expecting them to pick Ingram. Well, everyone knows what happened, and the Chargers selcted Ingram. Through 13 games, Ingram has 31 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 1 FF, 5 pass defense, and 3 stuffs. Ingram doesnt have the best pass rushing ability, but overall he's pretty good.
All in all, i think the Jets made the right move to draft Coples, with the exception of Jones. Coples is one of the better players overall, considering he could stop the run and rush the qb. So maybe Chandler Jones is the better player, but i agree with the Jets drafting Coples.
