The Glory Days of the Jets was when we had a defense that gave us our swagger. Declining opening kickoffs and saying "Go ahead take your shot" and being excited about watching our D are now exchanged for uninspired Mark Sanchez drives. Teams who do not have an elite QB need an elite defense to become a consistent force. This is how the Jets will return to the ranks of elite Defenses
After watching the Thanksgiving debacle, the only thing related to the Jets that gets me excited is the future. Our defense has regressed from dominance every year since Rex came in as coach as the game has shifted to a passing league. This year the D has been above average which to me has been impressive considering the offense and special teams they are paired with. But there is no denying that it requires some tweaking, here is how i would attack to fix the D.
1) DEFENSIVE LINE. The best thing about our D this year has been the emergence of a stud on the defensive line in Muhammad Wilkerson. He anchors his spot on the run and in these last few games hes been getting interior pressure on Quarterbacks. After the first snap in the Pats game he was consistently getting double teamed but the lack of another pass rusher and with Quinton Coples getting ONLY 19 snaps the Dline looked like its average self. But this offseason i make one cheap transaction in signing Israel Idonije who is playing on a 1year 2.5 million dollar deal and roll out a front rotation with Mo Wilk, Coples, Ellis, Pouha Harrison and Idonije. I also would bank on the jets acquiring a pass rusher or too in rounds 2-5 because our first round pick will be listed below. If Wilk Continues to develop Coples finally sees the field (i am a coples believer in case you havent noticed yet) Pouha and ellis come back healthy and Idonije for depth and another rotational pass rusher (5 sacks so far this year) with 1 signing and a draft pick to rush the passer the look of our front four changes.
2)LINEBACKERS- This is the biggest problem of our D which is why i believe we should switch to a 4-3 defense. But immediately after the last game of the year cut Calvin Pace, Bart Scott, Bryan Thomas and try to trade Harris. I am not a know nothing fan and understand that if we get a 7th round pick back and get rid of that contract we made out pretty well but in the probability that nobody takes him we rotate him and Demario Davis all year. And in the draft if Manti Te'o is there immediately run to the podium and select him. Suddenly a 3 backer rotation of Teo and harris on 1st and 2nd down and davis and teo on 3rd our defenses speed down the middle is an asset instead of a problem. if this is a 4-3 team on third down you roll teo in the middle, Davis Weak side linebacker and somebody like a justin Durant who would be a cheap free agent who would not kill the defense and our dynamic has changed. Pair these linebackers with speed with a front of Wilk Coples and two best pass rushers on the outsides wither it is our draft picks, ricky sapp or whoever is playing the best at the time and Revis and Cromartie and who says we are not Elite Anymore!?
3) SECONDARY- Easiest fix would be to get the best Defensive Player in the league back on the field paired with an improved Cromartie and we are already better than 90% of the NFL as far as secondaries go. But i resign my favorite New York jet Laron Landry and slide him in at Strong Safety instead of having him in deep coverage like he has been doing most of this season. Dashon Goldson is a difference maker who is a free agent and pairing him with Landry would give us the hardest hitting duo in the NFL, but being realistic i would get rid of eric smith and sign Kenny Phillips from the crosstown NYG he will probaly come relatively cheap because of his injury history . He also is more of a Strong safety type but when he is healthy he is another impact player and a rotation of Laron, Phillips, and hopefully letting Josh Bush see some time in certain packages i like the look at safety. At Cornerback we roll out Revis Cro Wilson Lankster Trufant and Berry and im loving the look of the NYJ Defese in 2013. Thanks for the read and comment with your opinions on my thoughts or how you would fix our NYJ defense
