Let's take a moment to first understand where we are as you can't plot a course without knowing your current position. The Jets suck. Worse than that, we completely suck. From our front office to our coaches to our players we completely and totally suck. We suck so much we are redefining what it means to suck. Sure there are teams with worse records, but at least they aren't an embarrassment. I'm finding it incredibly hard not to hang my head in shame after the butt fumble. I didn't think anything could be worse than the Dan Marino fake spike but this did it for me.
Our GM Tanny is horrible. When we hired Rex, Tanny went with a win now mentality which got us to two Conference Championship games at the expense of our long term competitiveness. We have too many bad players making way too much money and not enough talent as a team to even be able to bench players who aren't performing. We went into this season with Pace and Scott who are so slow that they often appear to be standing still in coverage. They can't rush the passer, play in coverage or stop any run to the outside. Now in an ideal world, other teams would run up the middle against us giving them at least a chance to make a play. Holmes was a locker room cancer last year and we not only had to keep him this year, but next year as well. We're also stuck with Sanchez for 2013 as well. While he has had a few good draft picks, we have had way too few of them (due to trades) and this has left us with no depth at all asides from D-line (and possibly CB).
Rex is not a Head Coach. Or at least, he's not a good one. Rex is bad at managing the clock, bad at game planning (especially after a bye week), bad at making in game adjustments, bad at motivating his players and bad at holding players accountable for poor play or his coordinators for bad game plans. He is good at getting headlines, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Basically he's still acting like a Defensive Coordinator and not as the Head Coach of an NFL team. If he truly believes half of what he says to the media, then he is too delusional to keep. He's not Dorothy, this isn't Oz and wishing hard enough or making outlandish claims won't win us games. He has to go.
So what do we need to do? Well first off, Woody has to fire Tanny and Rex. We need to get a GM who knows football and an offensive minded Head Coach who at least recognizes that the ability to pass consistently well is important to win games. This is the first step to rebuilding which is what we need to do. That means writing off 2013 right now and hoping that maybe, if we make the right moves we can be in a position to make the playoffs in 2014 or 2015. The key is that we need to build a good football team based on drafting good players and have a pipeline of younger talent. We have relied way too heavily on free agents in the past. We need to identify young talent, develop them and use them the right way. We need to utilize our roster in an intelligent way, and try and trade some players during next season if possible to teams that might contend and have lost key players to injury.
We need to be smart, and we need to make sound football decisions. There are plenty of teams that are able to do this and there is no reason we can't be among them. This is how Woody can fill seats and make money instead of signing players like Tebow. Winning makes everything better. I've been a fan for over 40 years and I'm tired of this team letting down their fans as they have done, yet again.
