The AFC

You think we have problems? The entire AFC has problems. As of today, there are only 3 teams in the AFC with winning records, and that could slip to only 2 teams with the 3-2 Chargers hosting the Broncos tonight. By contrast, there are 7 teams in the NFC over .500. Here's a quick rundown of the weaknesses that are threatening all the "contenders" in the AFC:

Texans 5-1. Dismantled by Rodgers and the Packers last night. Star LB Cushing out for the year. Showed a weakness against the passing game, and an inability to score in a come from behind situation. Still, this is the team with seemingly the least problems going forward.

Ravens 5-1. Once agains, the Cowboys found a way to beat themselves yesterday, but the Ravens legendary Defense is suddenly vulnerable. Lewis is probably out for the year, and the teams best coverage guy, Ladarius Webb, also suffered a possible ACL. Ngata himself is playing through 2 injuries. In case anybody's paying attention, the Ravens are 26th in Total defense.

Chargers 3-2. 24th Total Offense and 22nd in Pass Defense, hardly a dominating team. Wins have come against Oakland, Tennessee and KC.

Patriots 3-3. Not surprisingly, lead the NFL in total points, but although Jones and Hightower look like great draft picks, this has not translated into an overall better pass defense. NE is 28th is Pass Defense and their secondary continues to get exposed.

Pittsburgh 2-3. Horrible loss to the Titans. Injuries: in 3 games this year, the Steelers have had 2 OLinemen go out of the game, and of course, their no. 1 pick, DeCastro, was lost before the season even started. Also, salary cap issues are telling with this team. They no longer have the depth that everyone always expects from them.

Broncos 2-3. Impressive stretches are coupled with mediocre play. Von Miller props up an otherwise weak LB corps. Manning may or not be the player he was, and the entire success of the team is now geared around the issues of a 37 yr old QB coming off major surgeries. Still, Manning looks close to complete, and the Broncos three losses have been close games against the Falcons, the Texans and the Patriots. Solid team.

The Jets have clearly dealt with injuries and some of their weaknesses have been exposed. But relative to the competition, we are right there in the thick of it. There are no reasons for extreme opinions either way at this point, like, "we suck" or "we're awesome". Lets just see how it plays out.
