BCS National Championship Game Thread - Alabama vs. LSU

Hey folks. Please use this thread to discuss tonight's matchup between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers. There are a lot of top prospects in this game, so feel free to discuss them, the BCS system, or whatever else you have on your mind. It's a great matchup between two football powerhouses and we're sure to see some great defense. I'm personally rooting for 'bama, mostly due to Jet players like Joe Namath, Richard Todd, Greg McElroy, etc. As always, standard rules apply for game threads, which mostly means no illegal streaming links. Have fun!

Unfortunately work tomorrow means I will be recording this and watching tomorrow evening. But there are so many quality prospects in here for 2012 and 2013 it’s unbelievable. Upshaw is obviously the guy most will be watching. You got Barron too, Trent Richardson! Morris Claibourne, Dre Kirkpatrick, Don’ta Hightower, and that’s just the players who could go in the first round in 2012. Enjoy guys!

Barron looks good

Kirkpatrick looks good.

Courtney Upshaw was a little bit slower but he is legit.

I guess AJ McCarron won the game for the Tide, not their ridiculous defense.

by NikolaiC on Jan 9, 2012 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

Jets could literally pick one Alabama Safety in Round 1 Barron

and Lester in Round 3 and have both Alabama Safeties. Fine with me these guys are solid

by NikolaiC on Jan 9, 2012 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

Barron at 16 is a huge reach.

I have a feeling that Lester will return to Alabama in 2012 and then enter 2013.

Kirkpatrick and Hightower

along with McCarron were the most impressive. Richardson and Upshaw did not impress me at all, but I won’t judge any of them on one game alone.

Everyone keep your eyes on

Courtney Upshaw, the OLB for Alabama. He is projected to go to the Jets in the first round by many scouts and mock-drafters. Also, my personal favorite, Trent Richardson. You’ll know who he is when you see him. Some other draft prospects are Mark Barron and Robert Lester, the safety duo for Bama. Neither are particularly great, but are arguably the two best safeties in a very weak class. Not many early round prospects for the Jets on LSU.

I would rather go with

Melvin Ingram or Ronnell Lewis at OLB.

just wondering if there is any cb's that could become a FS in the nfl

and if any top cb falls to us a 16 do we pick them ?

if its for you it won't pass you

by tinley24 on Jan 9, 2012 8:10 PM EST reply actions

None will fall to us.

Dre Kirkpatrick and Morris Claiborne will be taken within the top 10. Pretty solid there. Unlike Trent Richardson who could fall out of the top 15 to us. There are a couple of good safeties in the game in Robert Lester and Mark Barron of Alabama, but the best is probably Eric Reid on LSU who isn’t eligible for the draft. He’ll be in the top 20 next year.

LSU
Brandon Taylor S
Rueben Randle WR

To LSU, i'd add

Eric Reid, the safety who will be draft eligible in 2013, and Sam Montgomery, the defensive end who has said he will not enter the 2012 draft. DJ Fluker has said he will not enter the 2012 draft as well.

Barron with a huge hit on the first play

and another tackle on the second run, I’ve heard he is decent in coverage but man o man can he hit

by SantonioBurress on Jan 9, 2012 8:33 PM EST reply actions

Barron is a great run stopping corner, exactly the kind Rex loves.

In coverage he is still very raw, he can hold his own, but needs good coaching to really refine his skills.

He's got some real spunk to him

but i can’t decipher if its more of a sean taylor type which would render him a game changer or the boneheaded type like the brandon meriweather type.

Well he is known for being a very smart player

so I would not say he is a bonehead at all. He has a tenacity on the field for sure. When he is in the box, he plays with the aggressiveness of a linebacker.

I am fine with that. Then maybe a OLB in Round 2 and Tight End round 3.

I would like to sign the Jets sign a real free agent to play right tackle.

Wow upshaw has great lateral speed.

I hope he’s there at 16 with the bills looming, but Barron is a monster…. I don’t want a team like NE scooping him up.

by jets4life24 on Jan 9, 2012 8:58 PM EST reply actions

I don't think there is any way to justify using the 16th pick on Barron

but if we were to trade down to like the 26-32 then I would love to get him. As long as we get a pass rusher in the second round.

Lester is the better pure safety of the two.

He has a better balance between coverage and run stopping. He isn’t as pure of a ballhawk that Barron is and doesn’t have the strength to play well in the box, but a great safety nonetheless.

Something to really admire about Trent Richardson

is how he handles the football. He holds high and tight on every play. He has fumbled only once in his career and does a really good job of reaching out right before he is about to go down to pick up an extra 1/2 yard.

by LiveLoveNYJets on Jan 9, 2012 9:16 PM EST reply actions

I remember a kid on a team I coached.

Dad told him to always hold the ball at his side. After 4 fumbles we changed it. Dad flipped out, eventually trusted us. Didnt fumble the rest of the year. I’m shocked more backs don’t use it if they have fumble issues.

Great half of football.

Alabama’s defense would definitely be able to compete with some NFL teams. Courtney Upshaw, Trent Richardson, Mark Barron, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Tyrann Mathieu have all played a spectacular game so far.

richardson looks like a Shonn greene clone. we need speed

by Chrebetfan on Jan 9, 2012 9:55 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely not!

Trent moves and thinks so quickly at the line of scrimmage. He anticipates blocks better than any running back i’ve seen this year. He possesses game breaking speed and lateral agility. Combine that with his relentless power, strength, and determination to pick up every last yard, and the last thing you have is a Shonn Greene clone.

Difference is

Saints won the Super Bowl the previous year. The Broncos played the Steelers who had an unhealthy quarterback, they were missing their running back and safety, and had most of their dline leave early, along with Lamarr Woodley who only saw limited action.

Way to go T Money.

going to be interesting to see who wins the title...

IMO playoffs or BCS championship game counts more than regular season. No one claims the Giants should not have gotten the Super Bowl after they beat the Pats…even though the pats beat him the last game of the regular season.
Apples and oranges but still.

Don't see how Alabama isn't unanimous. #2 beat an undefeated #1 in dominating fashion and #3 beat #4 handing them their 2nd loss

OSU I doubt faced the same level of competition as Alabama, and that’s partly why they aren’t the ones facing LSU tonight.

Alabama the true#1 team.

That defense is outright amazing.

That's our boy Courtney Upshaw

Defensive MVP. I’d be happy with him. I’d be happy with Trent. I’d be happy with Hightower, maybe even Barron. Someone from this defense. PLEASE!!

Don’t want Barron in the first. I’d rather get a FA free safety, not a rookie. I’d be fine if we traded up a little to get Upshaw, try and get David Wilson in the second, and then a MLB prospect. Get a FS and RT in free agency and call it a day.

The bills have a chance at taking him.

But I think they need a big WR or OT. Maybe even a run stopper. I think upshaw will be a beast for us

Upshaw upshaw upshaw...

He would immediately improve our D. I’ve seen mocks of him going to the bills (seriously doubt it they need a big wr, OT, NT) cowboys (they need a corner), and the chargers (they pick behind us). Upshaw will be a monster. I’d love for barron to fall to us in the 2nd round too

Only really ever saw Bills/Chargers.

Even then that was rare and then we ended up with Perry i think in some of them.

I personally think it's between the Chargers, Bills, Seahawks, and us

Since the Seahawks are likely switching to a true 34. Buffalo might be going to a 4-3 though so we might luck out.
