Looking at the 2012 offseason
After watching almost every Jets game this year (first time that I have had NFL Sunday Ticket and I thank God for it every night) I have seen a lot of performance issues that I believe can be quick-fixed this offseason. I want to know what you guys think about my thinking on how we can address some of our weaknesses.
We start off by firing Schotty and promoting Bill Callahan to OC. Schotty could not gameplan to save his life and he did not know how to best utilize the skill sets of the players on the offense (for example; Sanchez throwing to many deep balls, Sanchez throwing 59 times in the season finale, calling Direct snaps on 3rd and long against DEN etc). Callahan brings experience and has already proved himself as a great offensive-minded coach. I think that his experienced game planning and head coaching success' will be an instant upgrade as far as decision making goes. Another name to consider is the recently fired former Bears OC Mike Martz (unless he retired). RB's thrive in his system and that would also compliment what Rex wants to do with the offense. Next is what I think we should do through free agency:
Looking at the coming available free agents it looks like slim pickings at the free safety position, but Michael Griffin or Reggie Nelson could be a good replacement for the aging Eric Smith. Safety is going to be one of the biggest needed additions for the Jets this offseason because we are going to need someone other than Eric Smith covering Gronkowski. The key to playing at home in the playoffs is beating the Patriots and the Brady-Gronkowski connection killed us both times we played them.
The LB position also needs more speed to provide better pass coverage and pass rush for the defense. IMO this will be best served meeting these needs via draft. Unless by some miracle Cowboys OLB/DE Anthony Spencer doesn't get re-signed then there is little to nothing available through free agency. And I am not sure if he would be able to cover an athletic TE anyway. Another option is Cowboys ILB Bradie James. Although he has played 9 seasons and doesn't provide youth, I believe that he is pretty good in pass coverage.
If we wanted to further fortify the DL we could sign Redskins DE Adam Carriker to help the run D. Another idea that I believe is worth consideration is thinking about trying to sign current Packers QB Matt Flynne. After his 6 TD performance last week there is no way Flynne's agent is going to let him not test the open market. If the price is somehow right then we need to seriously think about signing him and seriously consider moving Sanchez if we are able to land him. Flynne can throw deep, he has pin point accuracy and I believe that he has a lot of potential to be something special. Likely won't happen but this is my dream remember?
However, I believe that if there is a chance to sign current 49ers OT Joe Staley, then he should be our biggest focus of the off season. Imagine a line with Brick, Mangold, Moore, and Staley. That not only helps protect Sanchez but instantly improves our run blocking.
I'll do a mock draft in a separate post but I want to know what you guys think so far.

Funny thing...
After watching almost every Jets game this year
After the Denver game, I had a hard time watching a whole game the rest of the year. And I always watch every minute of every game. Its just after these last two years, this recent year was just so bad. I actually entered a season really hopeful, almost cocky. And slowly but surely, I realized it was bad. To the point where for my health, I had to distract myself (or rather, let my ADHD run free).
I believe [it} can be quick-fixed this offseason
I don’t share your optimism. I can understand your reasoning, but I need to see something from Rex or Tanny to show me this isn’t a complete dumb collapse.
I think I need another week or so before I can seriously consider how to fix Jets football. And then if it will actually happen…
Exactly
wtf?

He also said he threw it 59 times in the season finale.
He threw it 32 times.
I don't care what people say about me and i will keep doing what i enjoy.
I actually share your optimism about the offseason
I think free agency and the draft line up nicely with the Jets needs.
In the previous three offseasons, the Jets were alternately trying to bring in some big names, turn over positions, or retain their own free agents. This is the best chance to date to really “fix” positons of need with long-term solutions in most cases.
Err ... salary cap
We will struggle to sign one of the players mentioned, let alone four.
If we have $121m committed to next year (plus almost $2m in dead money) and the 2012 cap is $125m, with the excess roll over we have $127million
Even if release some players like Hunter and Smith, and with the $4.5m in exemptions under the CBA, we might have $12m of which $7m needs to go on the draft.
Only with major contract restructuring could we look to sign certain players.
The 49ers won’t let Staley go, nor will the Cowboys let Spencer hit the market. And with so many QBs going back to school, Flynn will be out of our budget.
$7m needs to go on the draft.
3.5 – 4m is all it will cost for our draft picks and our excess is 8m so that would put us up to 133m . so basically we cut smith and hunter and sign our draft picks and we are still at around 120m leaving 13m to resign our FA and to add 2 or 3 players
if its for you it won't pass you
Wayne Hunter is a 1 year deal
He can be cut w/out the remaining years costing anything because he had no signing bonus. Holmes can be restructured. There’s always a couple million to move around. The guys your mentioning are all big money guys. Joe Staley alone will get a 50 mil contract at least. Matt Flynn is getting no less than 40 mil.
Wayne Hunter's deal is 4 years, $15 million.
Do you really think Holmes would agree to be restructured?

Waynes deal is 4 years, but there is no signing bonus
It’s been reported that he essentially has a year by year deal. If you cut him, he wouldn’t have a salary cap hit on the team. It’s the same as having consecutive 1 year deals.
No WAY!!!!!!
Holmes shouldn’t even be on the team next season, much less keep him and restructure his contract thus making it impossible to ever get rid of him until he retires. The Jets already are in that mess (thanks Tanny, you ass!!!) with Pace and Scott.

I agree
I’m no fan of Holmes at this point. It’s obvious he’s a money player and not a football player. They may be able to restructure and work a trade do to his relatively young age, and talent level. Someone will bite on him.
In FA
We should go after a saftey and a OT in free agency. If we could go after a 3rd player it should be a RB. Maybe Micheal Bush
