Questions about the Jets

Hi everyone,

I’m visiting from Arrowhead Pride and I have a few questions about your team. First of all, it was an interesting season from Gang Green, but I'll be interested to see how you guys bounce back. A lot of talent is in place, so I wouldn't expect a repeat performance.

Now, I’m writing a piece on the Jets and I want to know your opinion. As a huge NFL fan (Chiefs more specifically) I know that fans are much more insightful than general sites such as ESPN and others. Without further adieu:

Star-divide

Who was the biggest rookie surprise this season?

Underrated player on the team?

Overrated player?

What is the position that needs to be upgraded the most?

Who is the player you feel is most on the rise?

Are you still behind Rex Ryan and his bombastic style?

Thanks for your time and good luck next season!

The biggest rookie surprise has to be Kerley.

I’m gonna go with underrated for Cromartie. He had a rough start to the season, but I feel like he earned his paycheck more often than not.

Overrated? This year, Santonio Holmes. It’s an obvious choice. We expected so much more from him than we got. Keller runs a close second to me. He drops more passes than most people seem to realize.

We need upgrades at a few positions (like OC, but that’s not a team position…) but I’m gonna go with RT as the most important one. Sanchez cannot live up to the expectations without ample protection. Having a weak link like Hunter on the line made the whole line shakier.

On the rise is probably a toss-up between McKnight and Kerley. Both guys really look like they can play. Josh Baker gets honorable mention.

I am still behind Rex. He is brash, he is a very good defensive mind, and now that he has experienced a bit of a mutiny it will be interesting to see what approach he takes next year.

Welcome.

Biggest Rookie Surprise – Jeremy Kerley by far. He came in as a fifth round pick who was just meant to replace Brad Smith in the Wildcat, but he really came into his own as a receiver and played in the slot for most of the year. We are all excited about what he can become.

Underrated Player on the Team – Where to begin. Mike Devito, Matt Slauson, Brandon Moore, David Harris, Kyle Wilson, Sione Pouha, and Joe McKnight all come to mind.

Over Rated Player – Probably D’Brickashaw Ferguson, at least this season he was. He was one of the best tackles in the league coming into this year, but he gave up sacks and pressures on a consistent basis. Really disappointing season from him.

Position that Needs Upgrade the Most - You can go with either Right Tackle or Free Safety here. Both Wayne Hunter (RT) and Eric Smith (FS) should never start for a team in this league and cost this team dearly almost every game.

Player most on the rise – Kyle Wilson. He had a disappointing rookie season after we drafted him in the first round, but he really came into his own this year and proved to be one of the more elite nickel cornerbacks this year. Some are hoping he can replace Cromartie at #2 corner soon.

Am I still behind Rex Ryan – Can’t answer this because I have no idea anymore. I am still weirded out by the past couple of weeks. I want to say yes, but I really just don’t know.

My thoughts

Who was the biggest rookie surprise this season?
Jeremy Kerley: I knew he would end up being a great pick. From the first day of training camp he has been my favorite player (mostly because he’s really cool lol). He has shown that he can be our dynamic punt returner of the future. He also did a pretty good job for the snaps he got as WR. In the last game of the season you could see he was really comfortable, catching 4 passes for 71 yards, 1 rush (end around) for 16 yards, and a long pass out of the wildcat. He really showed us how dynamic and versatile he will be for us moving forward. I expect a greater role for him next year.
Other option(s): Muhammad Wilkerson

Underrated player on the team?
Mike DeVito: He is a force in the running game. I would have picked Pouha but I he has been getting a lot of love lately from Jets fans on this site so I wouldn’t say he’s that underrated on this site anymore (but from other fans, he probably is the most underrated).
Other option(s): Sione Pouha, Matt Slausen, Kyle Wilson

Overrated player?
This year AND ONLY THIS YEAR, D’Brickashaw Ferguson: He had a down year for himself. Got beat more than he should have. He made the Pro Bowl based on his name.
Other option(s): Eric “Smart Player” Smith

What is the position that needs to be upgraded the most?
RT: Wayne Hunter is god awful. Very, very high in the “Sacks allowed” and “QB hits allowed” categories
Other option(s): FS, WR (hopefully next year we will be returning only Holmes, Kerley, and Turner)

Who is the player you feel is most on the rise?
Jeremy Kerley (reasons listed above)
Other option(s): Mo Wilkerson, Kenrick Ellis

Are you still behind Rex Ryan and his bombastic style?
As a coach, yes. When he talks about winning the SB and other teams, I don’t listen. I don’t really care what he says. I don’t hate it but I think it’s kind of pointless

Curious why are you writing an article on the Jets?

Who was the biggest rookie surprise this season?
Jeremy Kerley, 5th round pick. Returned punts, and was the slot receiver.

Underrated player on the team?
David Harris, MLB. The Jets finally paid the man. But he is not mentioned often among good ILBers.

Overrated player?
Santonio Holmes, WR. Overpaid, under productive. Apparently a cancer.

What is the position that needs to be upgraded the most?
Right Tackle. Honorable mention is Safety.

Who is the player you feel is most on the rise?
Joe McKnight, KR/RB. Led league in KR average but got snubbed from the probowl.

Are you still behind Rex Ryan and his bombastic style?
I’m not really sure Rex is as bombastic as the media portrays. But I’m still behind him.

I'm trying to put together a guide

I watch a ton of NFL (and have Sunday Ticket) but watching the Chiefs only lets me see the other teams a few times per season. I would say I know a good amount about every team, but you guys live and die with the team, and I wanted to tap into that knowledge.

I think the fans know more than a lot of the media members (and big companies) because you guys don’t get paid to watch.

I appreciate the feedback very much.

We're the same team as last year, except incredibly better, and with new players.

by Flowers24 on Jan 5, 2012 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I follow several other teams

but nobody is as familiar with the rest of the NFL as their #1 team. I probably could name every single player on the roster and half of the practice squad, and I’d be lucky if I could name most the starters of the other teams I like to watch.

Who was the biggest rookie surprise this season? greg mc elroy.he looks like he has some fight it him and looks a steal for a 7th .

Underrated player on the team?matt slauson . 1 catch 1 td . solid all year ,

Overrated player? ferguson was waaay under par this year

What is the position that needs to be upgraded the most? RT

Who is the player you feel is most on the rise? matt slauson

Are you still behind Rex Ryan and his bombastic style? not really .

if its for you it won't pass you

by tinley24 on Jan 5, 2012 8:54 PM EST reply actions

Here you go

Jeremy Kerley is the biggest and most pleasant surprise.

Underrated: Three way tie between Matt Slauson, Mike Devito, and Kyle Wilson.

Overrated is Cromartie. He had a bunch of horrible games and played up and down, bad tackling, bad coverage, lots of penalties. Yet he’s still treated like the best #2 CB in the league. Honorable mention to Santonio Holmes, who isn’t highly rated right now but is paid a ton of money for nothing.

Biggest needs: Right Tackle. Then pass rush. Then either WR or Safety.

Most “on the rise” would be Maybin since he went from zero to situational hero. Calvin Pace’s play has elevated. Same for Kyle Wilson.

I am behind Rex, but I’m tired of predictions. I think his words get a disproportionate amount of attention from the media too. What I am not behind is Mike T and the offensive coaching (except Callahan).

Welcome to GGN.

Rookie= Kerley.
Under rated= Whichever one you like more, Sione Pouha or David Harris.
Over rated= By far Cromartie. He’s a girly man who can’t tackle.
Upgrade position= FS or RT, or maybe OLB which is why i wan’t Courtney Upshaw as our first round pick in the draft.
Rise= Kyle Wilson or Aaron Maybin are both reasonable, i gotta say Wilson.
Still DEFINITELY under Rex, i actually think he would be be one of the best Head Coaches in the NFL if he could shut up after his SB predictions. I don’t mind the Super Bowl prediction but i hate the smack talk before the game, the Giants game burned us.

I don't care what people say about me and i will keep doing what i enjoy.

Less dumb mistakes and elevated play

but that’s every single year for Cro. Some games he’s an asset, and the rest a terrible liability.

hmmmm

rookie – i’ll go between kerley and mo wilkerson. kerley was really solid as everyones mentioned but wilkerson really held up as the starting DE all season from wk 1 and did a really good job taking over for shaun ellis

underrated – definitely sione pouha. maybe he’s not fully underrated by jets fans, but the guy is an absolute beast and was really dominant this season at NT. i have the feeling most nfl fans really have no idea how really good he is

overrated – plaxico. ust b/c you catch a lot of td’s doesnt make you a good player. the guy pretty much disappeared for an entire season

position upgrade – 4 positions 1a) RT 1b) Safeties 1c) WR’s 1d) OLB

rising player – a tough one as i’m not sure there really is one but i guess either kyle wilson, mo wilkerson or aaron maybin if he ever learns pass rush moves and puts on some weight

rex - yeah i’m behind him. he’s gotta tone it down a bit but we all loved him when he was winning and i dont just drop ppl due to one bad season after a couple yrs of great success

metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?

Well...

Biggest rookie surprise: I have to agree on Kerley. When we got stuck with D-Mase and then even HE got shipped out, I was worried that our already depleted receiving corps would be unsaveable. He really stepped up. If he and Turner can keep stepping up, we’ve got a shot at growing some young guys into solid receivers.

Underrated player on the team: I’m not sure he’s underrated anymore, but Nick freaking Mangold. We all saw that Baltimore game. Mangold is super clutch and does a lot more than he and Sanchez let on in calling out coverages. Honorable mention to Pouha for quietly having a beast of a season.

Overrated player: I think we can all agree Holmes didn’t quite live up to the hype or the contract $$, regardless of whose fault that was. Honorable mention to Bart Scott who ran hot and cold all season long.

What is the position that needs to be upgraded the most: RT. Wayne Hunter should be ashamed. I almost laughed a little when I learned it was Hunter who called Holmes out in the huddle in the Dolphins game. Anyone else, I might’ve given props to. Hunter? He should be ashamed that he didn’t “quit” – he just sucked.

Who is the player you feel is most on the rise: I think it’s a tossup between Mo-Wilk and Kyle Wilson. Honorable mention to Joe McKnight (if he stops fumbling returns).

Are you still behind Rex Ryan and his bombastic style: I am, but I think the bombast needs to be balanced with a) better control of his players, and b) more involvement on all sides of the ball. A HC should not be unfamiliar with locker room turmoil or with a skewed pass/run ratio (on a supposedly “ground and pound” team).

Cool post to do

Rookie— kerley, reason mentioned abover
Underrated—- pouha for sure, does evrything not enough credit … Scott, say wat u want bet nobody on this site want to meet him in the hole 1 on 1, he jus gettin old.
Overrated—- CROMARTIE by a long shot, he sucks cant cover or tackle whats his purpose??
Upgrade position— OC, RT n both SAFTY needed those upgraded wk 2, n a #2 corner, Cro sucks
Player on the up—- joe mcknight n kerley with a better OC they will be used right
Support Rex—- yea he earned 2 more years

by kle15 on Jan 6, 2012 1:22 PM EST reply actions

Who was the biggest rookie surprise this season? Kerley, too many reasons already mentioned.

Underrated player on the team? Pouha is definitely worthy. As was said above, Jets fans appreciate him, but the rest of the league can’t even say his name.

Overrated player? Holmes. You get paid that much, you can’t drop 20% of the passes thrown at you in the final few games of the season when your team’s playoff life is on the line.

What is the position that needs to be upgraded the most? Single position FS, but they desperately need a pass rusher, wherever he plays.

Who is the player you feel is most on the rise? Wilkerson is going to be a beast in a couple years.

Are you still behind Rex Ryan and his bombastic style? Yes to the first half, still behind him, but he could be less of a blowhard some of the time.

Over-Rated players!!

Ferguson-Sanchez-Greene-Holmes-Burris-Keller-Scott-Pool-Thomas-Leonard
This does not include players like Smith etc. who I don’t even rate. What happens next with the Jets?Unfortunately I’ve been watching the same movie for about 50 years.

Over rated?

Just asking, when has anyone said Shonn Greene, “BURRESS”, Pool, or Thomas was amazing?

I don't care what people say about me and i will keep doing what i enjoy.

by sanchise6 on Jan 7, 2012 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

Greene was supposed to be our franchise back-BURRESS was supposed to draw double teams and be a

big factor in our offense-Everyone on this site was clamoring for Pool all season-If you’re a starting LB on a team that was supposedly making a Super Bowl run,Thomas was supposed to hold up his end so yes ,these guys were over-rated.

by Putnan Prince on Jan 9, 2012 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Who was the biggest rookie surprise this season? Jeremy Kerley, he really stepped in after Mason left.

Underrated player on the team? Kyle Wilson, Patrick Turner, Aaron Maybin, Sione Pouha, and Matt Slauson all deserve close consideration this year. For sheer involvement in big plays, Pouha or Wilson seem to often find ways to be involved. Slauson was immensely dependable.

Overrated player? Santonio Holmes.

What is the position that needs to be upgraded the most? Right Tackle. Then Safety. I would have said Linebacker (need more help on the pass rush), but I think maybe Tight End. Keller’s dropped a number of catchable balls.

Who is the player you feel is most on the rise? Sione Pouha and Kyle Wilson.

Are you still behind Rex Ryan and his bombastic style? Yes, but I think the media overreacts to any comment – if another coach in the league said it, they wouldn’t bother to print, but Rex embraces the ‘put it all on my shoulders, it’s what I’m here for’ mentality. I do think some of the attention will go away when the media tires of it, and there will be less headlines. But that could be another couple years.
