You know, with all these potential holes we may need to fill...
I'm wondering if we have enough draft picks and salary cap space to be able fill all of them with quality players. The most prominent one as of late is receiver. In all realism, Santonio Holmes will probably be back on the Jets next year. He's a really talented player, and it's really difficult to get out of his contract. I'm just hoping we find some way to set him straight and make it work, and that this experience can be a little humbling. Then on the other side, there's an even bigger question mark. I don't think Plaxico will be a starting receiver with the Jets next season, and if he does come back, it will probably just be as a pure red zone target. A few options arise here. We could bring back Braylon Edwards, if he's willing to at what we can provide him. I don't think we'd be able to bring in a big name free agent like Vincent Jackson or Dwayne Bowe, for both salary cap and continuity reasons. There's also the option of drafting one, and we could very realistically end up with either Michael Floyd or Alshon Jeffrey. Supposedly though, Floyd is a bum and Jeffrey isn't very fast so i don't think that would be a good idea.
Then there's right tackle. I really hope the FO sees this as an area of necessary improvement. Wayne Hunter isn't getting it done. We could draft one, though i think it may be a little safer to bring in a proven free agent. Supposedly Vlad is making improvements, but i don't expect him to be starting next season.
Now, safety. Jim Leonhard and Brodney pool are both free agents, and Eric Smith can't cover tight ends for his life. I would expect that at least one of the above returns, but we really don't have any good safeties to begin with. There's the option of drafting a safety, but supposedly the safety class isn't very good this year. There's also the option of getting one in free agency, but i doubt we'd be able to get Michael Griffin, and I think I heard something about the 'skins franchise tagging Landry.
Linebacker. Bryan Thomas probably won't be back with that injury and his age, and neither Jamaal Westerman nor Garrett Mcintyre proved that they deserve the full time starting spot next year. The obvious solution would be to draft one, and there seem to be plenty to go around this year. I would expect the FO to address this. But there's a question mark regarding whether or not Bart Scott will be back. If he's not back, we need a quality player to replace him, or that'll just become another area of weakness next year, even with David Harris alongside whoever that ends up being. I have a feeling that they may just promote Josh Mauga to a full time player, but i don't know if that's gonna work out.
so, when you look at the whole picture, we have holes at receiver, right tackle, safety, outside backer, and possibly inside backer. I guess some of you may also call running back an area of need, but i doubt the FO is gonna do anything about that. Anyway, it's really hard to get quality players into all of those positions with the amount of cap space and draft picks we have. Please leave your thoughts below, i encourage them.

They’re interrelated. If they add a pass rushing outside linebacker, safety becomes less glaring because a good pass rush means you don’t need to cover as long. A good right tackle reduces the need at receiver because there’s extra time for somebody to get open. Very few are great across the board, but there should be plenty of resources for the Jets to greatly reduce their more glaring problem areas.

good point
I’m just worried that some area isn’t filled in well enough and that it ends up bringing the rest of the team down. Kinda like right tackle did this year, since it hurt the pass protection and run blocking.
And all of it looks better with good QB play.

yeah
according to nyjetscap, they are near there. however, i’ve seen articles saying that they are working on a larger cap, one even said close to 150. i saw this on the bucs, blog, i’ll try and find it

Ok, so if the cap is $125 mill and we have $8 mill to carry over, then the Jets cap is $133 mill
I also read a good bit on Ny Jets Cap that said there may be a possibility of cutting Holmes at a cost of $8 mill and if done soon enough, it could count against 2011s cap.

The Bucs can apparently spend $150 cause they are carrying over $25 mill

wow
good for the bucs. still 133 is pretty good. we can’t cut much, but we can cut smith, after that we wont save much from anyone else. maybe trade a guy like pace or scott for a draft pick to make room…

There isn't really much to cut but maybe some deals can be reworked.
Still, there isn’t much room to sign any big FAs. First and for most, retain certain FAs like Westerman and Maybin, perhaps Patrick turner and Leonhard. Then set aside $5 or so for rookies and cap space for injuries. Its looking pretty tough. But then again, thats what Tanny is good at.

i see sanchez and pace as prime candidates to try and rework
and hell even holmes as a good will jesture for a parting schotty
if its for you it won't pass you
brilliant idea, we sell off Holmes to the Bucs for his contract and hire Edwards.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!

By the way, speaking of drafting an OLB
how come i’ve never seen anyone mention Jarvis Jones?
good post
you raise some very interesting points .
firstly with the draft we might get 2 starters hopefully RT and OLB . if we trade down we might actually get another starter but usually 4th-7th round guys don’t start for a year or 2 if at all.
on FA edwards should be a cheap replacement for Plax but there are other options like bringing in Mercedes Lewis as another TE . imagine lewis , keller and cumberland with edwards and mc knight on the field at the same time in the redzone .matchup nightmare for opposition defences .
at rb i’d go for a cheap FA or maybe try and find a guy later in the draft . someone like K smith DET would come cheap enough and still has a v good upside .
safety is the real problem position this year . if we fail to land griffin or Dashon Goldson who are the only worthwhile safeties in FA then we could either over reach for a guy in the draft or try and trade for 1 .
but on a good note , cutting Hunter and Smith will save us over 4m in cap .
also not sold on scott leaving but maybe we try and convert someone to mlb if he goes
if its for you it won't pass you
just checking out our cap situation
our draft picks can be signed for about 3.5m so that would leave us at 124.5 m .
cutting Hunter and Smith will save us 4.5m leaving us 13m under the cap
cutting other players like Boggs, Griffin,Riley, Epps, Jackson and Campbell ( all just lowly squad players would save us another 2.5m leaving us just over 15.5m to resign our FA and make FA signings .
if its for you it won't pass you
also
Marquice Cole Jamaal Westerman Patrick Turner Aaron Maybin are all restricted FA’s so we might get an addition pick or 2 if we lost them . i’m not saying we will tender all of them
if its for you it won't pass you
well
i’d tender most of those guys. realy want all of those guys back. i could live without turner, but this s only if we add a wr or 2 (or 3)

After what he did in the Hawks probably not.
We could probably get David Wilson in the 2nd or 3rd.

I hope not
Guy is very talented, but after this season he’ll be commanding good salary and RB’s are a dime a dozen.

Bryan Thomas might come back
He’s old, but his injury and age will knock down his price. Same thing goes for Jim Leonhard. If you can get two veteran starters to sign for vet minimum you do it. At worst they will provide depth and leadership if they don’t start. I think Patrick Turner will be re-signed because he is the big tall red zone threat for a cheaper price than Burress. Wayne Hunter was on a 1 year deal, even though it looked like a 4 year deal. He’s gone, Ducasse will stay. The Jets will bring in some old 30+ vet for a medium price to play RT. Every year theres a Flozell Adams, Jared Gaither, Bryant McKinnie that gets cut. The Jets will swoop in and sign them. Simliar to how they got Alen Faneca and Damione Woody. If they can restructure Holmes, and re-sign Braylon Edwards when the draft roles around you are looking at drafting best player available.
Bryan Thomas shouldn't come back anyway
he was a solid player, but eventually you have to cut ties with some of the veterans, and the front seven needs more youth and speed anyway. For example, how productive has Shaun Ellis been as a Patriot?
I'm neither for or against Bryan Thomas returning
I would say , look at what happened to the Jets without veteran leadership this year. Then I look at the players on the roster like Garrett McEntyre, Jamal Westerman. I think if you can get back veteran guys that started for you for minimum contracts you do it. They are better than the younger “fringe” players on the roster anyway and they can mentor the new guys.
either way we need some speed at outside backer
gotta draft at least one, with our without BT.
