Is it Worth Using A Draft Pick On A Kicker?
Now that the season is over, I’m starting to read a lot of mock drafts as always and on twitter (@D_Wyatt13) I’ll listen and converse with anyone who wants to talk NFL Draft. It’s close to an obsession. So recently I have been looking and talking, and one constant seems to be creeping up and that is the idea of using one of the draft picks to select a kicker.
Now we all remember the last kicker we selected, and for those who don’t it’s Mike Nugent. 2005 NFL draft, 2nd round pick 47 overall. One hell of a reach, a knee jerk reaction to Brien’s collapse in the 2004 post-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Nugent enjoyed three (technically four, but 2008 was a washout) uninspiring years with the Jets. There were some struggles his rookie year (22 of 28 made for 78.6%) a rather impressive Sophomore season (24 of 27 made for 88.9%) and standard if disappointing follow up season (29 of 36 made for 80.6%). An injury in 2008, a good replacement in Jay Feely and Mike is looking for another job.
Interestingly, Mike has just enjoyed one of his best seasons in the NFL with the Bengals (33 of 38 for 86.8%). The Jets current kicker on the other hand has felt the wrath of the fans with a less than impressive follow up season (19 of 25 made for 76.0%). No wonder the Jets faithful are at least contemplating life after Nick Folk and whether drafting a kicker may be the way to go.
In 2011 only one kicker was selected in the draft. Alex Henry by the Eagles who enjoyed a promising rookie year making 24 of 27 field goals and 32 touchbacks. 2010 yielded no kickers and only one kicker arrived through the draft in 2009, that being Ryan Succop with the Chiefs, three up and down years later it seems a case of why bother.
With the kick-off rules changing before the 2011 season to place the ball at the 35 instead of the 30, we are seeing a larger number of touchbacks, less returns and a much easier job for kickers who don’t possess the monster legs. Place kicking is still a valuable commodity, just look at Dan Carpenter’s monster strike on Sunday. However with the new kick off rule, in my opinion the value of the kicker has further been decreased when it comes to spending a draft.
In my eyes you have one potentially draftable kicker in 2012 and that is Randy Bullock from Texas A&M. He is the only kicker I would even contemplate picking up with a valuable draft pick. Kicking is a carousel, just like with Nugent they are here one day and gone the next. It’s beyond pointless to use a draft pick when you can find a fix through free agency.
If you want a kicker for the Jets in 2012, how about Rian Lindell (86.7% before he went down with injury) or old fan favourite Jay Feely (poor 2012 and getting up there in age) or even better, bring back Mike Nugent coming off a big year, Phil Dawson or Neil Rackers, maybe go for the big gun in Josh Scobee. My point being, all these guys are free agents, and kickers come onto the market each and every year. We were beyond stupid to use a second round pick, in the current climate though even a 7th is probably not worth it.

No way!
Too many other holes to fill/and or add depth!
Eh at 7th round are you really getting quality players?
I mean yes Brady was a 6th, but be honest… I’d say if we get a compensation pick in the 7th from FAs leaving then sure why not its a free pick at the dead last area of the 7th round. Otherwise no.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!

No earlier than 6th round in the draft please!
But we definitely need upgrades at PK and P if we are going to continue on the Brian Schottenheimer experience.
I'd put a 7th rounder on a good kicker.
No real picks though.
because when you have 87 picks a draft you can afford to.

folk has been decent this year
tj needs to go . there are some decent FA P this year who would be a massive upgrade .
if its for you it won't pass you
We need a FA kicker and Punter
Folk scares me everytime he lines up for a field goal. I don’t have a lot of confidence but if we can’t find a better option…keep him. Conley needs to go, we should have not gotten rid of Weatherford.
Folk always looks like a deer in the headlights to me
Even on short regular old beginning of the game type field goals his body language and facial expressions really do not exude confidence. It’s pretty bad when you start to expect the guy to miss because he looks like he thinks he’s going to miss.
We need a clutch kicker and a clutch punter if we’re going with son of Marty ball next year. when the offense can’t move the ball, we at least need to be able to count on those 3 points instead of grimacing through a Nick Folk try.
Actually...
Has a missed Folk kick ever cost us a game? I think there was some discussion about this last year. We’ve never lost by the number of points we missed out on. Mind you, actually scoring changes the dynamic of the game, but I think Folk has nailed it every time we NEEDED him to (Colts in AFC Wildcard round).
Dallas this year. That one was scary as shit.
He was kicking it towards my endzone and a bunch of us started praying and averting our eyes.

Against NE last lear in the playoffs
he missed a chipshot FG after the Harris pick, which could’ve cost the Jets big time.
Also against NE this year at home. He missed a 26 yard FG which changed momentum.

Russell Wilson
On a slightly related topic, what are your thoughts about Russell Wilson? I know he is very short for an NFL QB but I came away very impressed with his performance against Oregon. Is he going to forgo the NFL for baseball?
I’m a big fan of him at the college level, he made some excellent adjustments (attributed to his switch to Wisconsin) this year especially with his decision making which resulted in a lot fewer interceptions. Wilson coming back this fall after playing baseball in the summer leads me to believe that he would prefer to play football. He’s likely going in the 4th or maybe 5th round this year and it’ll be interesting to see how he dos in camp. His height is a big worry for me.

No!
Too many other needs RT, S, OLB, MLB, TE(have another weapon beides Keller), tall WR, i’ll take a new punter though in the 6th or 7th. Conley is horrible.

we have so many needs and so little depth that they really need to consider trading down

Probably not ...
I’m actually a Nugent fan. He had an amazing career at OSU ….. one of the few kickers who has ever gotten a lot of press at the college level. I think it was a stretch to draft him as high as the Jets did. It’s possible they could have picked him up on the 3rd or 4th round but …… clearly he was one of those few kickers who was going to get drafted.
All that said …… because of where he was drafted, the expectations were unusually high (and they should have been). The Jets didn’t get the return they should have from a 2nd round pick (although …. having said that, Rex and Tannenbaum haven’t done so great with their draft picks the past few years).
I am happy to see Nugent now a first-tier PK in the NFL. He was clearly an integral piece to the Bengal’s success this year. I only wish it had happened with the Jets.
Nah I don't think so.
Easy enough to get a competitive one as a UDFA. However I will say the opposite about the PUNTER from LSU, Brad Wing. From what i have seen of him, he is clearly the best punter to ever come out of college, and he is a freshman. Kind of like the Peyton Manning of Punters. Could be the Sebastian Janikowski of the future.

Not the first time to waste a second round pick. It's been pathetic.
Nugent, Clemens, Ducasse… Just trade up

Yes
There is more than one draftable kicker in this draft. The Sharp kid from Oklahoma State is both the kicker and punter. He was something like 21 of 24 on field goals, had close to 6o touchbacks and averaged 47 yards per punt. With a ground and pound offense, the caliber of QB we have, and the type of defense the Jets run good field position is key. Knowing that the opposing team will always start at their 20 following kickoffs is huge and having a big-legged punter is very important. The fact that he does both jobs and would save a roster spot is also very important.
I’d use the 6th round pick if necessary to get the Sharp kid, but hopefully the 7th will get it done. The kicker and punter will have a much greater impact on the success (or lack thereof) of the team than a position player taken at that point in the draft at least 90% of the time.

i honestly do not care who the kicker is
as long as it is not nick folk. he was terrible. if anything, he was clutch. but he did not make the east kicks.
i think the jets need an upgrade at punter more than at kicker

A great kicker and a great punter can be huge for a team
I’m biased because I’m a 49ers fan, but David Akers (our kicker) and Andy Lee (our punter) and our special teams unit has been crucial to our success.
Having a guy who can regularly hit 50+ yard field goals and a punter who can boom it 60 yards up field but can also drop it inside the 10 when precision is needed has gotten us out of many jams.
Definitely worth spending a 6th or 7th rounder on those positions if you can get a stud.
