Nick Perry, USC
USC DE #8 Nick Perry Highlights 2010 (via CaliforniasGold)
And here's a link of Nick Perry vs Jonathan Martin (top offensive tackle prospect).
6-3, 250
55 tackles, 13 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 2FF
Perry is a guy I thought would have gotten much more pub by now. I'm somewhat surprised at how little regard he has received. He's got prototypical size and fantastic athleticism. He also has the two qualities that are most valuable to pass rushers: 1) a good first step; and 2) very violent hands. Perry's explosive first step and extremely violent hands make him a menance on the edge. In the link above you'll seem him take Martin to town in most pass rushing situations. Luck was constantly under duress and unable to stay in set in his spot in large part due to Perry's continuous harassment.
Perry is much better suited to play OLB in a 34 than he is DE in a 43. With the additional space he would get from the OLB position, his lightning first step and his hand usage would make him really tough to handle. Perry has the size to hunker down on the edge, and the speed & athleticism to drop into coverage. He'd be perfectly suited to play on the weakside while Pace does the dirty work on the strongside.

After the season Tyron Smith went back to USC to go 1 on 1 against Perry.
He said Perry beat him a couple of times. I really love Perry. He has trouble against the run and there would need to be a ton of attention focused on that area to help his development, but he can be special. I actually think he is the best pure pass rusher in this whole class. If we can’t get Upshaw, it’ll be hard to decide between Perry or Ingram if both are available.

IMO Crack has it right, Perry is a Weakside OLB
Perry,Ingram,Mercilus, Curry, Upshaw of all of these guys IMO Perry has the biggest upside. Nick has linebacking skills, so the transition is not huge. Perry is a three down LB
Ingram has played up, down, in & out he is more versatile.
Perry is just a WOLB that is it yet I’d still take him just not over Ingram; actually both would be the coo of the century domination.

Ingram could be a superior Pass Rusher
You can play Ingram inside or Outside. IMO you could play him as an inside LB, or in Passing situations you play him as a tackle ala Justin Tuck…..Perry may be able to cover a little better, something to watch at the combine
At this point, Upshaw is slipping.
Ingram is shooting up and a guy like Perry, even though a lot don’t like him, might pass him soon.
He could be the one.
I’ve seen his film and I love his ability and agression. He’s a projected late 1st-early 2nd but he is a top 15 talent. With all the pass rusher talent, we could possibly have ingram, perry, and mercilus available at 16.

Its a great year to double dip. We could get one of those with the first pick, then get a Curry, Irvin, etc in the 2nd round.
don't forget mclovin
he could replace pace next year easily

2 young beasts rotating with maybin and pace to keep em fresh.
2 young pass rushers would definitely bring strength, versatility, youth and speed to our front 7.

Perry is intersting
I can’t wait to hear his combine numbers. This guy could grow into the OLB position. Though he is more sized for 4-3 OLB, I could see in in the 3-4 learning coverage and so on.
I like him the best as the 1st round pick
Courtney Upshaw is a good all around player, but he’s good and not great at any one thing. I think Perry is a potentially great pass rusher, which is what the defense needs. I’d take Perry over Upshaw at 16 if they were both there.
It doesn't take long to see what makes him so good.
He has the best hands work I have seen in a prospect at his position in a few years. His arms are constantly swiming and moving but at the same time there is no wasted movement. Lineman just can’t get a grip on the guy. He’s pretty lengthy for his smaller size as well which is nice but I don’t want to go too far saying that.
He does have trouble against the run and it stands to get worse before it gets better. Guys with active upper bodies often have trouble with the run game because they get no finess from the lineman thats trying to block him. It’s strait to the chest and he’s in trouble.
I wonder if there is some weight to be gained. He needs to find a way to plant himself and maybe 8 or 10 pounds in the seat could help him dig in a little bit more.
He’s not complete and I wonder if the things he’s lacking in could be helped thu coaching and training but he’s a great prospect. I really like his hands when he rushes. He could be a great pass rusher.
Eh I changed my mind about gaining weight.
I like him where he is. The more I watch the more I like him.
I would love to see him in a little bit of space at OLB. He might be the guy. I have a good feeling about him.
Totally agree with ur take. Dude seems longer than his height suggests, and those hands… He’s relentless. And he takes a good path to the QB; doesn’t seem to get pushed wide too often.
He’s exactly the kind of pass rusher we need. He doesn’t always have to get there for a hit/sack, but he will change the launch point a whole bunch. And the value of that skill is enhanced by having a high rev’d speed guy like Maybin opposite. By moving the QB off his spot, he makes them hold it longer so that a guy like Maybin can still work his way around if he gets pushed wide.

Trade down for Perry?
He did not dominate against stanford but there is consistent pressure on Luck because of Perry and they only rushed 4 guys the whole game pretty much. It would be great if we could trade down in the first and still get this guy. Since there are at least 4 really good pass rushers in the first round maybe tanny could work some bonus magic. what if we ended up getting two of these guys? it could really make a difference.
I don’t think you can trade down and expect him to be there. He could easily be the first pass rusher taken.
When there is little talk about a very good player, it usually means he’s highly coveted, imo. GMs don’t want to draw any attention to the guy and have him poached.

I'm excited for draft day
We dont have to wait for an hour plus for our pick. And we’ll be in a spot where top 10 talent can fall right into our laps. This team can propel itself back to where it expects itself to be in one draft. Draft Perry, maybe anotherOLB and a RT, a WR, and a safety. Bring back braylon and sign Mike Griffin. Time to get the Jets rollin again

I like his speed...
Like his size (height wise) but he doesn’t appear to be that versatile, or even that strong. IMO Curry had the biggest upside. He played real well in the sr bowl with a strip sack and he may have had another. He was also constantly in the backfield wreaking havoc. I’m a little scared though that if he keeps performing like this he will have gotten himself into the late first round and maybe even to the Pats. I have a REEEAAALLY good feeling that he’ll be the best pass rusher out of this draft.

He is definitely not the best pass-rusher in the draft thats Qinton Coples ad Perry is also probably the better pass-rusher.
He’s is still a pretty good one though. Your right though that his performance in the Senior Bowl raised his stock into the late first-round and I think he’s going to do really well at the Combine too.
Curry has the full package
He has shown the strength, versatility, not elite but average speed, elite-like burst off the line, and rips past blockers with ease and he’s a solid tackler. None of the others displayed all of these in highlights that I’ve seen. My only concern is I don’t know how he will do in coverage but that is not why we would would be drafting him anyway. He’s always been disruptive and is constantly in the backfield

I Like Him a Lot
I’ve about decided I don’t want Upshaw. He’s too slow and I think would wind up being another Thomas. Give me two of the following: Perry, Mercilius, Curry, Ingram, Irvin and McClellin

Would you trade up for the second half of your pair ?
Perry&Mercilus
Perry& Curry
Both Mercilus and Curry have size and can play on the Strongside over the TE. Trading the Jets third round pick gets them from 48 (second round pick) to the top of the second round in theory.
Would you trade up ? Is Pass Rush that important to this team ? Yes , for me.. Is the hiring of Mike Smith an indicator that the Jets may double dip at OLB ?
i think we can come away with 2 good olb's without trading up
if we came away with curry in the 2nd an mccellin in the 3rd i’d be very happy

NO
No trade ups. They are unnecessary most of the time. The best GMs almost never do it. Good talent can be found in every round. The best way to insure they add a 2nd olb is to trade down in a round if they think where they pick is too high to take an OLB they like.

The Jaguars traded up to draft two pass rushers a couple years ago
Neither one of them panned out and they lost traded draft picks. It never makes sense to trade for players at the same spot. Maybe draft one early and one later on, but when every team has multiple needs, cover them and then go back as needed.
