Coples or Ingram?
Quinton Coples vs Missouri (via JmpasqDraftjedi)
Melvin Ingram vs Nebraska (via JPDraftJedi)
So the debate has been framed. Lets have at it. Myself and one our well-respected, highly esteemed and frequent commenters have already broached the subject in another post, but I wanted to bring it here where we can flesh out our arguments without hijacking the thread of that post. I think its a very interesting debate and the arguments are very strong for each side. I won't say who is on which side, so not to influence your decision one way or the other, and we'll let you view the tape and draw your own conclusions. Above are clips of both Coples and Ingram, and I think most will agree that each of the clips captures the talents and skill-sets of the respective prospects in question pretty accurately.
Quinton Coples hails from the University of North Carolina, and measures in at 6-5 285lbs.
Melvin Ingram hails from the University of South Carolina, and measures in at 6-2, 275 lbs
We have a Carolina border war here folks. What say you?

I agree...
and just from the tape above (I know only one game) Ingram looks like he takes plays off (or more plays off).

I voted Ingram
Cause I think he’d be a better fight here. Not necessarily better play. But I don’t know.
I think I’m leaning more towards Melvin Ingram, as he is more versatile, and is more likely to be there at 16, or even if we decide to trade down.
I think that overall, Coples is the better prospect, but I highly doubt that he’ll be there by the time that we pick. Coples has elite pass rush skills, and is better against the run.
I’m looking at the scouting reports on ESPN Insider, and Coples is shown to be the better prospect. Ingram isn’t shown to be that great, but I don’t believe half of what I hear (or read in this case). I don’t think ESPN is the greatest of sources, but that’s what I have to go off of.
In conclusion, I would pick Coples if I could, but I don’t think he is going to be there, so I go Ingram. He does seems to be a better fit for us as well.
Coples could lead the transition for the Jets to be a 4-3 team
Rex is being proactive with his defense. The NFL has caught up somewhat with Rex’s blitzes and overloads, so IMO Rex is growing the defense. The Jets with the hiring of Dunbar is going to more a 4-3 look, with stunts and twists. Rex is going to go with what works, but he is not standing still… Will the Jets continue to run a 3-4, absolutely..Dunbar is going to try and make Devito & Pouha into a minor league Williams Wall.
Coples, is a 4-3 DE, can he play OLB ? (Demarcus Ware plays OLB) yes. I can’t see Coples getting out of the top ten, I wouldn’t swap a second round pick to get him, but if the Jets do, there is change in the wind,
I Will Be Shocked Beyond Words
If Rex transitions the D to primarily a 4-3 alignment. I just don’t see it happening.

I am too influenced by the Dunbar hiring
Rex is trying too generate more pressure/sacks. The Jets like a lot of teams morph from a 3-4 to a 4-3 all the time ( Bellicek), IMO it is a question of emphasis and where your talent is….
Rex will do what it takes to win . I always thought of the Patriots as a strict 3-4 team, defensive guys are trying to catch up with these explosive offenses.
anybody else try watching both videos at once???

I'd pick Ingram
But I’d after seeing Whintey Mercilus vs UCLA, I’m starting to love him http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=60fJEcIF1h8
He looks relentless out there. He has an excellent bull rush and pretty quick feet. Didnt see much pass rush moves but that can be worked on.

Yeah he looks good there
playing standing up, with one or two hands down. The thing that is impressive is that he is constantly double teamed there but still can make plays, and when single teamed caused havoc. Still there is something a bit slow or plodding about his initial movement and he didn’t show anything freakish athletically, but he was still impressive.
Coples, but I think both are overrated

Ingram.. I hear coples has effort problems.
He is a monster, but effort is always a question mark. Whitney mercilus and nick perry are great too.

No, Nick Perry is not great.
He plays the slowest out of all of these guys being mentioned, not to mention his size.
Oh I made a mistake he runs 4.67 40 .
sorry I was thinking of someone else
Some things I noticed on Coples.
He was advertently keeping his legs clean on many plays and absolutely taking it easy on others. But it’s not his motor, It’s his brain. This is deliberate One of his handlers got through to him about staying healthy and he took it too far imo. Parents often say things like that to blue chips like this kid cause they think it’s the smartest thing to do for their childs payday.
He is a special talent tho. The college game is too slow for him that much is easy to see. Everything comes too easy. He sheds blocks like they aren’t even there. When he wants to he can throw lineman aside like they were 12 year olds and walk to the QB with ease.
It’s troubling to see that kind of gift for dominance in a sense “wasted” but there is more at play here.
He needs his brain rebooted with a Coach who is gonna challenge him to nut up and play like the freak he is. Environment helps too. “Bright lights, Big city” is exactly the thing for a kid like this.
Often times a player “not giving effort” at the college level is not evaluated the right way. Certain players let up in the same way a child prodigy will fail his Math class because it’s all too easy for him. Thats not every loafer btw but it IS Coples. He’s gonna turn the freak on in the NFL and the team that ends up with him is gonna be lucky to have him.
Rex can turn this kid into something truly nasty and I have really enjoyed the prospect of him being a Jet.
The Idea of Wilk and Coples playing motivated on the same D-line gives me chills. It’s not even fair what thoes two would be capable of for 60 min of football.
He’s my pick all the way. But Ingram is nothing to laugh at in the slightest. I just have trouble judging his ceiling. I have the idea that he’s playing close to his max ability right now.
I agree on Coples
The more tape I see and the more I think about him, the more it becomes apparent that he can sleepwalk to 10 sacks just by coasting. If the dude turns it on and plays with an edge he’ll be truly special.

+1
imagine how good he could be playing with a chip on his shoulder . if he fell to 16 i think he would be pissed and we would get 110% from him all season . add rex into the equation and that could go up to 150%

Problem is
His body type and style are such a hot commodity in the league right now that his senior bowl will have people jumpin at him. No way he makes it into the double digits. Too bad though.
In my mind, they're both questionable fits in the scheme.
But Coples is a large question, Ingram looks quick and athletic enough to make the adjustment.
Coples
Although I think Ingram is a better fit scheme-wise, Coples seems to me to be far and above the more physically talented player. Should he fall to the Jets at #16, I would hope that they would entertain offers from other teams salivating over him and take the best offer. They could still get at least a couple of excellent players at excellent value and that hopefully would address a couple of needs.
I just don’t think he fits the 3-4 scheme unless He’s big enough to play 3-4 DE and Rex plans on changing his scheme so that DEs rush the QB more. Further, I don’t think it would be smart for the Jets to switch to primarily a 4-3 scheme as the LBers are just too old, big and slow. Of course that’s true for both schemes, but they are better fits in the 3-4 than 4-3. With the OLB prospects in this draft, the Jets better come out of this draft with at least one, if not 2 pass rushers.

INGRAM hands down
first off he plays in the SEC the best division in CFB. He also played at a high level all year long. Second not one big time defensive player out of UNC has panned out. most of them are fat and lazy. Coples gets by on his athleticism, In the NFL he will have to get a lot stronger. Ingram is already pretty diesel the dude is jacked; he also needs some OTAs and a training camp plus a game and he’ll be ready to go. Coples will need to spend the whole year to get stronger.
