Talent Watch: Audie Cole, ILB, N.C. State
One position of need that hasn't gotten too much attention is at ILB. The 31 year old Bart Scott is only getting older and slower. There has also been talk about the Jets possibly moving on from Scott. Even if Bart is part of the 2012 Jets, a replacement will be needed sooner rather than later. If the Jets do decide to bring in some new blood to our ILbing group, there are a number of guys that would fit right in. One guy that I have had my eye on this year, is Audie Cole. more after the jump...
Audie Cole: Height: 6'4" Weight: 245 Projected 40 time: 4.65Outside of Revis and Cromartie, there is a severe deficiency in guys who can cover. This goes double for our linebackers. Both Harris and Scott are very similar in what they are good at. Unfortunately, they are also similar in what they are bad at. An ILBer that can match up with the size and speed of TEs, or RBs, is someone the Jets could benefit from.
Audie Cole is just the guy to fill that void. Cole is a 3 year starter at N.C. State, and has led the team in tackles in 2 of those 3 years. He has very good instincts and is very fast to react to what's going on in front of him. Audie's fast reactions allow him to diagnose plays quickly, and puts himself in good positions to make plays. Cole is very rarely fooled on play fakes, or misdirection plays.
Cole is strongest when in coverage. He uses his size very well against TEs, and has the speed to stick with them. Audie is very good at jamming at the line, and throwing TEs off of their routs. When in a zone defense, Cole reads QBs eyes very well, and is often in good positions to make plays on passes. Against the run, Cole shows off his strength and tenacity. Audie isn't scared to battle it out with blockers, and does a decent job of disengaging. Going into his senior season, Cole's biggest concern was his ability to wrap up. Audie improved in this area a great deal in 2011, and was able to break the 100 tackle mark.
Tackles: 108
Tackles For A loss: 12.5
Sacks: 5.5
Passes Broken Up: 4
QB Hurries: 4
Forced Fumbles: 4

He is a round 3 guy right now, but a good performance at the Senior Bowl might launch him into the 2nd

Jeez. He's tall.
6’2" is the MAX I would take an ILB would be in this league. You have to be stout enough to take on lead blocks in the NFL.
He’s a situational guy at ILB at best. He may even have to be a convert.
This kid will get some attention from teams as a 4-3 OLB
Im not sure he fits any other mold.
His arms are too thin to keep himself clean of blockers. Lineman will eat him alive in the run game. He doesn’t have enough pop to take on lead blocks and he relies mostly on instinct.
He looks good in coverage and great coming around the outside.
Does his skillset really match-up with being a possible Bart Scott replacement?
Well the way I see it
We run a lot of 4-3 and nickel, so I am not worried about that at all.

Granted. your right about that.
I wonder if the team would make a move if he were still around at the end of the 3rd round.
I’d like to see the kid jamming the Pats TE’s on passing downs at the very least. That alone would be an improvement.
We pick at No80
I think a 6.4/6.5ft 245lbs LB who is as quick as the 6ft6, 270lbs Gronk and similar sized TEs will be advantageous and would pair up well with Harris
I'm talking about moving up in the draft or picking up an extra 3rd.
It’s just my silly fantasy but I would just like to see the team pick up an extra pick in the first 3 rounds. I’m tired of having a limited number of picks. It keeps us from picking up guys like this that arn’t exactly a perfect fit but still could work out great for the team.
My mock draft suggestion was ...
Trade down from No16 to No28 for example and take a WR like Mohammed Sanu
Use our No47/48 on an OLB like Vinny Curry
The pick for trading down would likely be a pick around No58-No60. Use it to take a S like Markelle Martin or a big CB to convert like Trumaine Johnson
No80 to be used on Audie Cole ILB
In the 4th round, I’ve seen a guy like Levy Adcock being mocked because some scouts suggest he is very heavy on his feet so will slide. Alternatively use it to trade for a RT …. I’ve read the Jags may go for a LT like Jonathan Martin moving Eugene Monroe to the right. At this point, Brooklyn born Eben Britton may become surplus to needs
WR – Sanu
OLB – Curry
FS – Martin, Johnson or other
ILB – Cole
RT – Adcock in the draft or trade for someone like Britton.
This is a Linebacker Defense
I like Mauga and Bellore as ILB’s, with so many other needs , I will pass until the 4th round… great value in the 4th
I am hoping most of our biggest needs will be taken care of with FA or the 1st 2 rounds

I think this guy could actually be effective as a pass rusher if delegated to that role. I may be mistaken, but I think NC State had him line up as DE occasionally too.
He only just moved to ILB this season.
He’s been a really solid multi purpose tool for NC State. Thats where his true value is. He could be great in situations. I just wonder if he’s an every down player on this defense.
We could rush him like we rush Scott and Harris.

Mauga
I really like Mauga. He’s really athletic and he’s good in coverage. He kind of reminds me of Sean Lee in terms of his style of play. I think that he would do really well as a full time starter. We have to remember that Rex is also good at developing defenders, we need to keep in mind the guys we have on the roster. All in all we should address the position for depth but we can address that in the 5th or 6th rd.

I keep hearing this and I'm not sure I agree
I know that Rex had some success in Baltimore developing players like Bart Scott for example, but I have not seen anything like it with the Jets. Name one player that Rex developed on current team?
No one really comes to mind…..
Mike Devito
Revis had his real breakout year under Rex, Sione’s turned into a real force at nose tackle under him, Cromartie is really starting to be as good as good as he can be under Rex, Kyle Wilson has made great strides.
