Jets Make Dave DeGuglielmo Hiring Official
Dave DeGuglielmo is our new offensive line coach as reported by the official Jets twitter and many beat reporters. We talked over this recently. Personally I like the hiring, I think he has a lot of talent. Him being a former Dolphins coach is irrelevant

Now if he could just get those Long brothers to come with him.

Help me understand thsi Can’tWait. In no ways argumentative but if you see my post a few posts below, i’d like to get a better understanding as to what makes you happy about it. Maybe make me feel better too.
I think Jim Leonhard should be in the next Nike "Boom" Commercial or at least the next time he makes one of those tackles he needs to jump up with a can of Kool-Aid and shout "Oh yeah".
I wrote at long length about why I like this hire yesterday.
I think the post is off the main page by now but you can check out some of my points I made there.
Basically my thinking covers a few points.
I questioned Bill Callahans dedication to coaching the offensive line with his up and down past. Imo he is a guy that is just using the OL coaching position as a place holder until he gets another chance at running another offense. I also questioned his dedication to the development of young players like Vlad with the same reasoning I just mentioned.
DeGuglielmo has been a line coach from day one for almost 20 years. He lives it, he breathes it. Some would make the point that if he were good at what he did he would have been promoted by now. I look at it like this is what this guy is ment to do. He’s totally focused on the task and job he owns. It’s a bit of a weak argument to make to average fans but it’s something I respect as a career lineman and I think our guys will pick up on that as well.
I also can’t discount his contributions to a superbowl winning Giants team and the huge amount of success he had for 4 years. The giants averaged franchise highs in the running game with him helping the Line on that team.
The Dolphins fared very well with DeGuglielmo in 09 (his first year). Again, some would point to drop offs the last two years but thats just looking at things on the surface. The dolphins have been devastated by injury since DeGuglielmo’s first year with them.

Here’s a great interview with the guy that I like. Just seems like a great guy to me.
Musta totally missed it. I’ll take a read on it. Thanks for posting your points here as well though! Appreciate it! Good points but I still get nervous about too many Dolphins not enough Chiefs. Haha that’s my new Todd Haley reference…

I don't know David. . .
Why should we be happy about inheriting an anemic offensive coaching staff??
I dunno about “irrelevent” David. It’s getting to be really scary from my perspective. I am not a fan of Sporano to begin with but I’ll reserve most of my judgement until I give him a fair shakedown. But when i start seeing other staff and/or players start migrating over from Miami it really starts making me nervous. I do not want to be in a position where we get rid of someone who we thought was a good majority of our problems and bring in all these folks who were on a team who had a plethora of problems themselves, which would indicate to me, these guys were most likely part of those problems.
It also means that we’re not doing the appropriate amount of scouting before we bring these guys in. Instead we have someone like Sporano sitting down with Rex, Woody and Tanny saying… I know a guy who would come here that I work well with… I’ll vouch for him.
But when was the last time the Dolphins were really a team that had their act together where you really said.. man those coaches can coach?
I’m not just talking a winning record. You can have a great coach and have a losing record. I’m talking… wow that guy really can coach, it’s a shame he’s on a team with such bad talent. Miami doesn’t strike me that way. Miami does have some talent.
But we really need to start looking elsewhere other than just Miami because that’s all i’m starting to see. Whether they are good choices or not. And this is starting to worry me.
I think Jim Leonhard should be in the next Nike "Boom" Commercial or at least the next time he makes one of those tackles he needs to jump up with a can of Kool-Aid and shout "Oh yeah".
Hi Tamarack, all valid points that you make. In my opinion Miami doesn’t have the talent that the Jets have and are going to have if we address our logical needs on the offensive side of the ball. In 2011 their offensive line ranked a respectable 17th, 16th in 2010 and 1st in 2009, the Giants were ranked 4th in 2008, 3rd in 2007, 4th in 2006, 10th in 2005, 11th in 2004. Stats according to Pro Football Focus and Football outsiders. His teams constantly rushed the football well, and the Giants protected their QB well. He worked closely with Chris Snee and center Shaun O’Hara and turned them into pro bowl players. In college South Carolina ranked as one of the top units in college football during his tenure and that’s saying something as they had been terrible before he arrived. He was an offensive lineman himself and has coached since he put down his pads. He worked with Sparano at BC and they had a lot of success so I’m not surprised that he wants to work with him again. The Dolphins had a whole host of problems on the playing side and with their ownership. I honestly hand on heart don’t think that Dave DeGuglielmo was a problem. He has had success at pretty much every single stop in his career apart from the Dolphins where they struggled as a franchise. I can’t forget over 20 years of coaching and success at his position based on his time with the Dolphins.
If we start to bring in any other of the coaching staff, I won’t be happy. I can’t see anyone left on their staff that has value to the Jets. Spags I like as a coach, an offensive coach not a head coach. Dave DeGuglielmo is a guy I like because of his past and I think he can really work to make our offensive line one of the best in the league. We have a lot of the parts in place already. I do think we need to bring in a QB coach from somewhere else to compliment both of these guys. I think it was a logical move to bring Dave in though and I don’t think it is indicative of poor scouting or research. I’m sure Sparano vouched for him, but even if he didn’t; he is a good stand alone coach.
That in a nutshell is why I like this signing.

About you not wanting anyone else from their staff...
We may be getting…(gulp)…Daboll. Who, apparently, while the Cleveland OC, made Colt McCoy play fullback while on scout team.
Thanks David. Of course hearing a lot of word around Henne and the likes of Marc Columbo as possibilities and after moves like Sporano and now DeGuglielmo will have a lot of Jets fans making comments like the above.. “NY Dolphins” so some educated contexted like yours and Can’tWaits are much appreciated.

Great point on Snee and O'hara
I read somewhere yesterday that he practically built thoes guys. Totally forgot about that
Was this guy
the oline coach for the Giants or not? I just read a Cimini article that said he was an assistant line coach with the Giants before going to the dolphins. If this is true he probably doesnt deserve much credit for the giants line playing well while he was there.
The dolphins line was terrible the last two seasons so I have a hard time getting excited about this hire. I will take a wait and see attitude with this but its hardly a slam dunk.
As for daboll that hire would be an absolute zero. There would be no way to spin that as a good move unless you are just looking to defend this front office and coaching staff at all costs.

No problem with this hiring IMO
But Im sure come training camp the media is going to run with “Dolphins North” and other retarded talking points
ESPN, Mike Francesa, NY Post, NY Daily News, Fox Sports = Propaganda
Blue and Orange, Green and White, Red and Black

we'll probably get less media attention this year
cuz of the giants, that’s probably not such a bad thing either.
I would like to believe you but cynicism says no.
The media loves its Jet bashing

Love this hiring and don't care if the media calls us Dolphins North
as long as at the end of the year they’re using names like “AFC East Champion” and “AFC Champion”
I’ll take reigning Super Bowl champs.

Challenges for DeGuglielmo
I would hope that he has input to cut or keep Hunter. He certainly had a nightmare at Right Tackle with Colombo with the FIns. Then of course there is Vlad’s development. Possible input into the draft. And finally putting in a new offense, Dave is gonna be a busy guy
