An Indepth Look At FA's
We all know we have lots of needs that we need to fill this off season . We also know that most of those needs will have to be addressed in the draft because we have very little cap room to play with . This post will hopefully help you see what talent is available in the FA market this year at position of needs on this team . So lets have a look at what players will test the market this offseason .I will leave out RFA's .
The top ten FA players by position of need in my eyes are
QB
Matt Flynn , Jason Campbell, Josh Johnson, Kyle Orton, Chad Henne, Shaun Hill, Dennis Dixon, Brady Quinn, Vince Young, Josh McCown .
RB
Ray Rice, Matt Forte, Marshawn Lynch, Michael Bush, Mike Tolbert, Kevin Smith, Peyton Hillis, Cedric Benson, Ryan Grant, Kahlil Bell,
WR
Dwayne Bowe, Vincent Jackson, Marques Colston, DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Steve Johnson, Mario Manningham, Robert Meachem, Brandon Lloyd, Braylon Edwards ,
OT
Jared Gaither, Kareem McKenzie, Demetrius Bell, Anthony Collins, Jeff Backus, Breno Giacomini, Barry Richardson, Max Starks, Khalif Barnes, Brandon Keith,
OLB ( TOP 7 )
Ahmad Brooks, Jarret Johnson, Matt Roth, Trevor Scott, Quentin Groves, Gary Guyton, Erik Walden,
SAFETY
Michael Griffin, Tyvon Branch, LaRon Landry, Reggie Nelson, Dashon Goldson, Dwight Lowery, Richard Marshall *, Tom Zbikowski, Chris Hope, Mike Adams,
* Note : Richard Marshall is a CB but i have heard good reports that he did a decent job of replacing Kerry Rhodes at FS when he got hurt . its for that reason that i have included him in my list .
Of all the above players i see most of them re signing with their own team or other teams will be willing to pay more than us for their services . If i missed out any guys you feel should be on the list i.e better than guys i have up their then feel free to add them below . Also feel free to pick and choose the players you would like the jets to try and sign , what position you think we should look to fill thru FA or any other comment about FA you might have .
This post is just a reference point so you guys can see what type/quality of players are hitting the market that we could look to add to our team . It will also hopefully show the positions where there are lots of good option available ,like WR and RB , and the positions where there are very few quality players available, like OT an OLB
Cheers

Ideal free agency for me...
Braylon Edwards, Ahmad Brooks, Kareem McKenzie, Laron Landry, and any of the QBs not named Matt Flynn or Josh McCown.

Too high of a price tag
The money needs to be spread out to many different positions and depth. All of it can’t be spent on one guy.

i dont want mckenzie
and i’d stay far away from vince young as well
metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?
While it's true McKenzie had a down year, he used to be a great offensive tackle.
He probably suffered this year because the rest of his oline was as flimsy as doodoo. Give him Mangold, D’Brick, and Moore and he should do fine on the right side. I don’t see why people are so down on Vince Young. He won games as a starter in Tennessee, he’s good as a backup.

I Have Read
that the Jets have $8 million in cap space that’s rolled over from last season. Tanny probably will restructure a contract or two or possibly cut a few players, and add anywhere between $5 – $10 million. So they could be playing with between $13 -$18 million.
I’m guessing that re-signing Pouha and Turner might take $4 – $5 million at a minimum, and possibly more. That could be 1/4 of their FA $s.
I have no idea what kinds of salaries Gaither or McKenzie could command, but think RT should be the #1 priority in FA if possible, and would guess that it would probably be in the $3-5 million per year. That might not enable them to sign either Griffin, Nelson, or Goldston or a vet QB unless E. Smith and Hunter are cut.
Conversely, Dennis Dixon could be one of the best values at QB. The Jets could possibly sign both Dwight Lowery and Dennis Dixon after re-signing Pouha and Turner,, and still have some money left to re-sign Braylon and maybe another cheaper player or two.
While I don’t like building the team through FA, it is a concern that it appears as if the Jets aren’t going to be able to do as much to address needs through FA as we’d like, so they are going to have to address them via the draft.

Tanny is gonna have to get pretty creative to make space
One part of restructuring is usually spreading money forward and perhaps guaranteeing some it it in those futures years (to make it worth while for the player to play this year for less and diminishing the chance of being cut later). But some of the highest paid people on the team, namely Pace, Scott, Sanchez, Holmes, Ferguson, have been somewhat under performing. Therefore, they are not great candidates to restructure because a few of them we might want to cut next year when their contracts allow for a lower cap hit. They would need to look at Mangold, Cromartie, perhaps Revis or Harris as the best guys to approach to restructure.

Interesting read. I don’t agree with what he suggests regarding Holmes. IMO that would be like rewarding him for his bad behavior. Otherwise, I agree with his ideas and appreciate his work.

I think his restructuring plans are optimistic bordering on silly
but other than that a very good, realistic breakdown.

I agree some of them were bordering silly but i think it’s a realistic view on what “could” be done. Some of it might be… most of it won’t be.. i’m sure. Tanny is good but that seems like too much restructuring to me for even him.

logical players to possibly cut (per nyjetscap.com)
by cap savings…..
eric smith – $2.05 mil
wayne hunter – $2.5 mil
ropati pitoitua – $1.15 mil
gerald alexander – $708k
plus a whole load of lower end guys
prob is you also gotta account for however much they’ll need to spend on the draft
metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?
Lower end guys aren't worth talking about since they will only be replaced by other lower end guys making exactly the same salary. You gotta suit up 53 either way.
by CervezaVerde on Jan 22, 2012 2:08 AM EST up reply actions
what i mean
is that they have tons of lower end guys (dedrick epps, john griffin, dennis landolt, taylor boggs, royce adams, trevor baltz) whom i’ve never even heard of
metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?
Understood. Then what I was saying is that they are getting paid $400-600k each.
Their replacement will get $400-600k each. So there is no savings in cutting them because they will get replaced by the same salary therefore having no effect on the cap.

Pouha isn’t worth 4 -5 mil. a year and Turner will get the Vet min. he’s a RFA nobody will touch him. IMO Pouha is worth maybe 2 a year

Sign Dashon Goldson and DeSean Jackson. Draft Upshaw, David Wilson, and Matt Reynolds. Sign a cheap RT to backup Reynolds. Sign a cheap QB like Josh Johnson to backup and push Sanchez. Cut Eric Smith, torch uniform and ban anyone from ever wearing #33 again. Similar plan for Wayne Hunter. Resign Pouha if possible, but prepare for the Kenrick. Disregard Patriots, acquire Super Bowl.

Give him his money and he’s fine. It’s almost impossible to find a receiver that’s not a give me the ball diva. That’s what you want in a playmaker. You just don’t want a CRIMINAL diva player. The man was working for barely above the vet min this year. If he had his money there wouldn’t be a problem. He’s the legit deep threat we need and it finally gets us fast on offense. Jackson, Holmes, and Kerley? Shifty speed right there.

how was santonio this season once he got the money
i’m not interested in anoter wr who quits on his team like jackson did this season
metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?
Santonio is a different case. Not all pains in the asses can be treated the same. Jackson quit because he was getting jerked around by the team, like Matt Forte. He wasn’t complaining about getting balls like Holmes was, just that he was being underpaid. Pay him and he doesn’t have that complaint anymore.

It’s more important to get a big receiver than another speedster.

Jackson is a playmaker
but he is going to be playing for a run first team and he is not a great blocker by any stretch of the imagination. Would rather have Braylon who we know can block, can get deep, and isn’t afraid of contact.

Nice ReBut.
Thats why Shady McCoy was the number 4 RB in the NFL and Philly hard the 6th best running game in the NFL, check your Stats before you post.
by JETSFAN IN SC on Jan 22, 2012 3:31 PM EST up reply actions
the stats mean nothing he was saying that desean isnt a great run blocker
just because the WR isnt a great run blocker doesnt mean the offense can;t have success. But with Sporano it looks like its going to be ground and pound and if thats true it would be preferential to have a good run blocking WR
Chill out dude.
Everyone knows Desean isn’t a good run blocker. He’s flimsy and gets no push. Theres a difference between having an amazing supporting cast and having an amazing running back.

Y'all keep sleeping so I"m gonna keep blasting you with this.
2012 Atlanta Falcons Free Agents: John Abraham, Brent Grimes On Lengthy List. “defensive end John Abraham, the franchise’s all-time sacks leader who put up more sacks than any other two 2011 Falcons combined, could be leaving us.”
If you forgot about 6 year Jet John Abraham who is 6’4 and 260 who once upon a time busted out a 4.4 40 time in the combine. It’s time for him to come home. NY’s wayward son will be back. The Jets need a pass rush, and he needs to retire with us. He did 6 years in NY, and 6 in Atlanta.
He’s posted sack numbers in the double digits every year except 1 for the past 6 seasons or so. He’s only missed 4 games the past 5 seasons. If the Jets sign him, and also draft a pass rusher, while re-signing Maybin they could go from having a weak pass rush to having 3 guys to rotate in a relentless attacking defense.
Although Safety is our biggest need
I would be happy if we resigned D Lowery –
Not that he is the BEST in the FA class, but he would be good enough (really better than just good enough) that we could address our other areas and then spend big money filling other needs. I was pissed off when we let him go, he was putting together a nice resume as a “converted” safety – great no but pretty damm good
I dont really want to draft one as many have pointed out that there are no top notch safetys coming out this year and we need a cover guy to shut down the Brady’s and brees’s of the NFL
We're not gonna be able to find a safety to do to tight ends what revis does to receivers
Tight ends nowadays are just way too big and athletic. What we need is pass rush to flush prettyboy out of the pocket, cuz he’s not happy outside the pocket. That’s what we did to him last year in the playoffs. And pass rush is interrelated to coverage anyway. The less time a quarterback has to try making a throw, the worse their decision making/accuracy will be. Eh?
They need a saftey that can jump the TE route's
There is no! I’ll say it again NO! saftey in the NFL that can man up the likes of Gronkowski, Grahm, Finley,Davis etc.etc. there just to big and athletic, hell Davis runs in the 4.4 range. He torched Jenkins all day last week. The point is that the Jets need a saftey that has great ball skills and great burst to jump the TE routes that is the only way to defend them.

Which ones are RFAs?
Just something that might help out a few of us, putting the UFAs on one line, and put a break before the RFAs…
i would add Chad Pennington to that QB list.

A few thoughts
One is that I really like Drew Stanton for a BU QB. The guy has a rocket arm, playing experience, and is a hell of an athlete. plus has pretty good size at 6’3".
I also would love Quentin Groves he could be a beast. Groves has experience standing up and in a 3 pt. and has done a pretty good job at both. He would give Rex that Suggs type of player where he can line up everywhere and anywhere. That would make for a Mayhem Groves tandem, has a neat ring to it, like it’s a place you don’t want to go to.
IMO I think both of these players would be great addition’s and not that expensive.
I'd love for us to get a FA at RT.
anything else though is up to money, the 4-5 million for in house free agents is probably spot on. Braylon Edwards would be very interesting specifically because he has history and also he is going to come really cheap. Otherwise I think our value should be in the draft.
Love me some free agency
I think most of the options at RB and WR will want contracts that the Jets can’t or won’t offer. I say offer Braylon a one year minimum and see if he bites.
QB is a paradox because the ones that can seriously “push” Sanchez will likely sign somewhere else for more money and/or better prospects of starting. I like Johnson or Dixon as serviceable backups. They’re not great or even really good, no backup we get will be.
I’d take pretty much any name listed over Hunter on the line.
I’m hoping we go for OLB or a pass rusher early in the draft, and target one of the upper tier more complete safeties in free agency.
Hoping for all of that is probably being way too optimistic.

he can pound the ball , play a little FB if needed and might not get as big of offers as some of the other FA RB

I think someone will pay him more than we want to
I’m very much against spending big money on the position, RB’s are a dime a dozen. If we’re going to shell out for a running back, not really sure I’d want it to be him.
