The Safety We Should Really Pursue In the Draft
Everyone one of us here who watched a Jets game this year (I hope that's all of us otherwise some people might be on the wrong site) knows that defensively we have a hard time stopping the Tight End. Actually hard time might be an understatement. Normally this wouldn't be biggest problem in the world because not many teams have a really good TE. Unfortunately for us, a certain team up North that happens be in our division has a pair of really good Tight Ends. We also know that Eric Smith is nothing more than a Special Teams player and a role player who comes in on third down as linebacker. So the sooner Eric Smith gets back on the bench the better.
Now a majority of these Mock Drafts have us taking Mark Barron at 16, and I am not a fan of this selection at all. If we take a safety at 16 that guy better be special a la Eric Berry, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Earl Thomas, etc.... Plus I think this draft is so pass rusher heavy I would love to grab a guy who demands extra attention ( Whitney Mercilus, Courtney Upshaw, Nick Perry ,and another guy I'm really beginning to like in Bruce Irvin). What if I told you guys there was a safety in this year's draft with the following measurables, 6'2 204 and will probably run 4.48-4.52 in the forty yard dash. He excels in man-to-man coverage and plays a very physical style of defense. He has really good ball skills and can also play near the line of scrimmage. He takes on blocks from anyone regardless of their size and is always looking to get in on the action. The best part is this guy probably won't come off the board until the Rounds 2 or 3. The only reason being is that he goes to a 1-AA school and is therefore questioned for level of competition. We all know the Jets aren't afraid of taking small school guys early in the draft e.g Kyle Wilson, Vlad Ducasse, Muhammad Wilkerson, and Kenrick Ellis.
The guy I'm talking about is Trumaine Johnson a Cornerback from Montana. Some people think he can make the transition to Safety. I'm someone that is hoping he can make that transition. We have the best secondary coach in the league in Dennis Thurman and learning from the likes of Revis, Cro, and Wilson (The best CB trio in the league) and a seasoned veteran like Jim Leonhard ( I'm hoping we bring him back) who knows the system could only smoothen out that transition. He's tall, he's fast, and he's physical which is everything we are looking for in a Safety. The best part is he excels at man coverage and off coverage so he should be able to cover Gronk. He's tall enough and has a good enough vertical to compete for those high passes that Brady likes to throw to Gronk. Also he's very adept Blitzer which is always a good thing in a Rex Ryan coached defense. I would love to grab this guy in the 2nd round or trade back into the end of the 2nd round after grabbing a RT.
Here's a write up CBS did on him . Also here is some of his highlights. My favorite part of the highlight is at 2:40 when he makes a great play and gives a hell of an effort to get off the block of the offensive lineman. Check out the score and the time btw.

Absolutely bloody no!
The fans of this team are calling for blood for Ducasse as a 2nd round project. I’d rather not have another 2nd round project converting him to Safety.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!
Now lets get a G-D snack!!!
"You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, f**k it, I don't care what you think."-Roy McDonald
he is no Vlad Ducasse
He has been on the radar since being a sophmore.
He has been excellent for the last 3 years proving to be hugely versatile … he’s even done well on the offense as well as a WR.
I think the 2nd round is too high but he will definitely be taken on Day2.
And the last guy drafted from Montana turned out to be a pro Bowler …. the guys they produce tend to do well in the NFL
If we can get him in the third round. I’d like to get Goldson, and I’d be interested to see what the Jets can do with Tracy Wilson and Gerald Alexander.

Tracy Wilson
Intrigues me but I don’t know if he has the man coverage skills. He’d be good as a replacement to Jim Leonhard one day though. Hopefully later rather than sooner.

Boooo
I like all the names getting floated over Goldson. He’s the sort of middled player we’ll totally overpay in a desperate bid to fix our team.

Respectfully disagree. IMO, he’s Kerry Rhodes, without the drama. I’d be happy with that.

Seriously?
You’d be happy with Kerry Rhodes Pt. 2? Unbelievable!!! I can’t believe what low standards some of you guys have (either that or you don’t know what you’re seeing). Kerry Rhodes sucks. He doesn’t cover that well, can’t or won’t tackle and doesn’t give full effort. He’s a pussy! I would want no part of any player that even remotely resembles him.

They're making Dashon out to be WAY better than he is
Kerry Rhodes is a much higher caliber player. Drama and all.
I really don’t know where all this love is coming from. He was on nobodies radar last year when he was available. He’s another Cromartie at a slightly different position.

If You're Right
then Dashon must really suck, because “higher caliber player” and Kerry Rhodes don’t belong even in the same paragraph, much less the same sentence.

Hey Crack, er uh, Joe, Kerry Rhodes was a little better then you are stating. Just saying.

No He Wasn't
He was awful for the Jets. He may be playing better for the Cardinals, but he sucked (both in terms of on the field play and attitude) with the Jets.

I don't know man, maybe we're romantisizing him in hindsight
but he was definitely a more complete safety and a standout player for both teams imo.

Perhaps
Maybe I soured on his play because of his laziness, lack of effort and unwillingness to tackle. At any rate, doesn’t really matter. We all see players differently through the filters of our own experiences and perspectives. It’s cool. Sorry, if my response had a hostile tone, I didn’t mean for it to. I should have said imo. When I posted that I was pissed because of the way Carlos Rogers was just letting Cruz get catch after catch. (I was rooting for the Niners. I’m not a native New Yorker and despise the Giants and Tom Coughlin). I can’t believe the roll the Giants have gotten on. I truly don’t think they are that good. If they are, then Coughlin ought to be fired for not having them playing better during the season.

2nd is too early but definitely in the 3rd
Most scouts are saying he will excel at FS because he has the size at 6ft2 and 204lbs but he is slightly slow at 4.52.
Think Mike Jenkins of the Saints but slightly bigger.
Jenkins
has turned out pretty good at safety for NO

At this point I'd rather an experienced FS
George Iloka, Boise, 6’3" 213 lbs, projected 4.5 speed. He played some CB there too so his coverage is probably pretty good. He likely already knows Kyle Wilson well.
you make him sound awesome...but
We need someone who can start RIGHT AWAY. maybe we get Goldson, and then bring this kid in as a project?
JOEY MAC BRINGS IT TO THE HOUSE
He's very raw.
I can’t see him starting in his first year. He misses too many tackles and he’s out of position at times. Plus his work ethic has been questioned and he’s had legal troubles.

Huh
According to Montana coaches he has outstanding work ethic, has been a shut down CB
And he has had zero legal problems. He was tasered by the Missoula police at a party where the allegation was music was being played too loud. He was not suspended by the Grizzlies and received an apology from the police. Some legal problems
i think he is in the mix if still there in the 3rd or 4th round
but i still see him as a development guy , which is not a bad thing in the 3rd round onwards but with our first 2 picks i think we need to find starters .
there are a few late round safety players i would take a look at as projects like Iloka FS , Boise and Smith SS Notre Dame. i’m almost certain that safety is a position we will strengthen through FA going by what Rex said about Leonard and what Mike T said about our safety play in general but i feel we could draft another 2 guys to develop and try and get them into the rotation in 2013 , but this depends on what the coaching staff might see in Wilson and Alexander .

not at safety
He is poor at attacking ball carriers in open space according to the scouting report and if he is not willing to hit the ball carrier what good is he at safety

Very intriguing prospect and I LOVE the idea of using big corners to play safety.
Preferably big corners that are adept at playing zone coverage. These guys will not only be able to play the passing lanes, but they have the size and athleticism to make the windows really tight when they blanket TEs.
Really like the strategy.

Wow after watching that clip, I really like that guy.
Great size, very athletic, very physical. He looks like he’ll be 10x the safety that he will be a corner. He breaks downhill on the ball in a flash, he’s got good ball skills (made a pick on a slightly underthrown ball). Loved the hit on the RB for an almost safety. Also LOVED how a trucked the RB that tried to pick him up on a blitz; he went thru that guy like he was a DE. Also LOVED the way he fought through 2 blocks to get in on a tackle on a WR screen; one of the blockers he fought off being an offensive lineman.
Really like this guy. I’m not gonna comment on whether he’s good value in the 2nd, bc I honestly have no way of knowing who will be available then. But I would be pretty excited about the selection regardless. Heanswers my two main questions: Is he a good piece of wood (check); and does he fit our scheme (check).
Rec’d for thinking for yourself and making a good find and introducing me someone I may have never known about if not for this post.

I'd rather get a Safety in FA.
The Jets will win the Super Bowl one day and that will be the day i laugh in your face if your not a Jets fan.
That or Barron
are the only viable starting options for next season
I think Barron should be our #1 target if available at 16

That Would Be One
of the worst decisions a Jets’ FO ever made imo. He just isn’t that good a prospect and will not be rated that highly. That would be a colossal reach, one deserving of getting Tanny and everyone in the Scouting Dept. in favor of that move getting fired. I’m glad you aren’t the GM.

I like the stratagy as well
But if we are going to CONVERT a corner to Safety and foll the hole that way, we would be better off chasing after D. Lowery when FA opens.
I also agree with a lot of other poster that a #2 Pick is way to high for a project. Around the 3-4 round range – Hell yeah all for it.
All that being said Corners do make good safetys expecially FS…so if he is there after we address OLB, and RT and WR[?] then all aboard
Eric Berry was a 5th overall pick
not exactly the same value of the 16th overall pick
Charles Godfrey of Iowa
College corner, smaller than Johnson, taken in R3 I believe and successfully started at SS despite being described as not physical
