Trying to keep everyone up to date on some of the expert choices for the Jets at #16 and Rob Rang of CBS has the Jets taking Alabama safety Mark Barron with the first selection. I have to be honest and say I wouldn't mind this selection at all. I will try and keep everyone up to date as new Mocks are released.

far far too early

Barron at 16 … that’s quite a reach when in all likelihood, he would be there in the 2nd round. He reminds me of Taylor Mays.

If we do want Barron, we must trade down

by kernowjet on Jan 17, 2012 8:20 AM EST reply actions

He also has 10x the IQ of Mays which counts for a lot. Like i said when Mays came up in discussion here, you can be as big as you like as quick as you like…….if you don’t understand where you need to be or what your job is. It’s not going to mean anything. Barron may be a little each at #16 but I don’t seem him lasting until our second round pick. If we were sold on him we could trade back and pick up more picks.

I don't want to reach for a LB/FS

If we draft a FS, I want a guy that is big enough to compete with TEs, and fast enough to be a center fielder

Get busy winning or get busy losing.

can he handle/tackle a huuuuuuge tight end?

Bad move

and the Jets are not that stupid. Barron is like many of the other good safeties in this draft-good athlete, good hitter, needs to work a bit on ball skills, etc. He is not a special player and 16 on a safety should be reserved for a Taylor, Berry or Reed type player.

Sure-the Jets safety play has stunk and they need to upgrade it. Can’t do that at 16. Why? Because you don’t beat a team like NE by having safeties like Barron. In fact I believe you don’t beat them with your safeties. You have to be smarter about your schemes and get more pressure on the QB. A lot more pressure. Remember all the throws behind Gronkowski last year in the Browns game our in our beating of the Pats in the playoffs? Get to the QB faster and from more angles and you beat any passing team, even one woth awesome TEs. Any safety matched up one-on-one with Gronkowski is a mismatch anyway.

Jets need to greatly improve their pressure generating capabilities and that can be better done with any number of the 3 or 4 promising OLB prospects. A safety of quality can be had lower down and in free agency.

I hate the "so and so pick shouldn't be used on so and so position unless he's a super star" argument

Take the best player on the board, unless you are absolutely stacked at a position like we are at corner. Now, IMO that definitely isn’t Barron in any scenario at #16, but I wouldn’t avoid him because he’s not Eric Berry or Sean Taylor (both of whom went 5th, a far cry from 16th). Could you find a quality safety later? Of course… just like you can find a quality RT, pass rusher, WR, RB, or any other position on the field. If Barron is our scout’s top player available whenever we pick, good draft philosophy says pick him whether that be at 16, 26, or 116. That said, Barron would be very disappointing especially depending on who was on the board.

by J-Nasty on Jan 17, 2012 9:24 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I totally agree.

The answer isn’t to try and go tit-for-tat with the Pats. They didn’t go out to try to find a receiver to beat Revis, right?

The idea is to find a dynamic playmaker but it doesn’t have to be an All-World safety. Getting more athletic up the middle and/or adding a dynamic pass rusher will be just as effective.

As will improving the offense. More points and an increase in sustained drives will keep limit Brady’s opportunities.

by Crackback on Jan 17, 2012 9:43 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

yeah they went the other way and signed Ocho who couldn't be beaten by him.

And the home of the .... JETS!!!

"They didn’t go out to try to find a receiver to beat Revis, right?"

That’s like going out to find someone to beat Chuck Norris in a fight, not happening.

by Timmaht on Jan 17, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

My philosophy is to go after a dynamic player with the first pick.

Somebody that has the potential to dominate his position. Barron doesn’t seem to be in that mold. He may be a solid contributor, but he’s not a game-changer.

by Crackback on Jan 17, 2012 9:11 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Barron might easily drop to middle of 2nd.

If anything, Jets should trade up a few spots from their 2nd round pick if they don’t think they will see him there in the 40s.

by ArunK on Jan 17, 2012 9:25 AM EST via mobile reply actions

we need a pass rusher bad, and a RT. I believe with you Crackback. If we can get an explosive player at 16 then we need to move on it. wether it’s on either side of the ball.

by Chrebetfan on Jan 17, 2012 9:25 AM EST reply actions

And that guy very well could be a RT.

I mean if we can find the Mangold of RTs, that guy who’s gonna dominate his match-up everyday all day, then hell yeah get me that guy.

That guy will dictate terms, and force the defense to adjust to HIM. If he’s gonna blow a guy off the ball every snap, and create easy running lanes, then he’s dynamic. Teams will have to adjust their schemes to him.

That’s type I think we should look for, regardless of position. A guy that allows us to dictate the terms and forces opponents to adjust to account for him.

Hilarious, Barron would be fine at 16

+1 to those being the best mocks. But Barron is too far of a reach for 16.

by Holgorsen on Jan 17, 2012 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Does anyone think a wide reciever would be

a better pick at first round? Maybe someone that can build a growing rapport with sanchez as we are trying mainly to develop our offence in this off season. Aren’t we?

by ToneTime on Jan 17, 2012 9:26 AM EST reply actions

Just wishing the jets can pull off a pick with a wide reciever like

the giants did with nicks (1st rounder but 29th). Signing already developed wide recievers like holmes and the like doesnt seem to be helping Sanchez. Unless of course Braylon Edwards gets a ‘get out of jail free’ pass(!) and stays healthy we should draft one in the first round

by ToneTime on Jan 17, 2012 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

Alshon Jeffery would be beast.

Jeffery did get booted from his bowl game but actually seeing that fight over and over again on the TV allowed me to see he shouldn’t have been booted. He grabbed and pushed the facemask but that’s after he had two punches thrown at him and didn’t swing back.

Fact is, he could be a great replacement for Plax and give us a big target with speed ala Edwards.

I like Kendall Wright but I have a good feeling about Kerley developing into a premier speed slot option and returner making Wright redundant.

Michael Floyd has got major problems with the hooch, and would be in a terrible situation in NY.

by Timmaht on Jan 17, 2012 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

The one problem is there's an overall lack of explosion in the draft

I like players like Jeffrey, Upshaw, Ingram… really good players, but none of them are extremely explosive.

I’m curious to see where Burfict lands. He’s probably clinically insane but if he’s sitting there in the 2nd it’s gonna be hard to say no.

by J-Nasty on Jan 17, 2012 10:09 AM EST via mobile reply actions

There are some gems

the DE from ILL is very explosive like JPP

by NikolaiC on Jan 17, 2012 10:15 AM EST reply actions

I like Barron just not at 16

Wouldn’t mind trading up for him in the 2nd round.

Oh yes that's right, I'm a Jets fan.

by Bob_The_Friendly_Baker on Jan 17, 2012 10:18 AM EST reply actions

Same, we all know we need a Safety, but I'm not sold on getting

what basically amounts to a SS in the 1st round. We need someone with better ball hawking skills or a CB to convert to Safety.

by Timmaht on Jan 17, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

Pass Rush Pass Rush Pass Rush

enough with ignoring a stud pass rusher. We screwed up last year passing up on Brooks Reed and we better not screw this up again. This team needs a pass rusher more than anything and its time to stop ignoring that need.

There are some good safeties available in free agency and the talk of wide receiver in the first round is completely laughable. We have a deep threat in Santonio Holmes that we dont use now because we refuse to throw deep. As long as we have a conservative game plan which we will with wildcat Sparano it wont matter who we have at WR.

Rex has to get over his ego thinking he can create a pass rush with his schemes and finally get a stud pass rusher. Maybin can be a nice situational player but he is not an every down player and we have nobody else who can get to the QB. As good as our CB are we can improve the defense so much with a real pass rush.

by bklynbrewcrew on Jan 17, 2012 10:24 AM EST reply actions

Saying you shouldn't look for a WR is laughable

What happens if you have a ground and pound philosophy with no WR worthy of the name …. and Holmes is a bum?

The opposition simply stack against the run, and you get 2yds a carry. Have a talented WR on the field keeps defences honest.

And why do you think Sparano will run a conservative offense? In Miami he was the Head Coach, not the offensive co-ordinator.

In Dallas where he was the offensive coordinator they were not conservative. In only 4 games did they score less than 20pts. Here are the scores of the Cowboys when Sparano was calling:

17L
27W
45W
24L
34W
22L
35W
19L
27W
21W
38W
23W
17L
38W
7L
31L

Hardly conservative play. Give him the players and he will maximise what he has

by kernowjet on Jan 17, 2012 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

WR are easy to find

we can easily get a decent WR in the middle rounds. Holmes is a legit nuber one receiver if we learn to use him right. We can also pick up Braylon Edwards for cheap and we know he had good chemistry with Sanchez. We have no business wasting a first round pick on the likes of Alshon Jeffery or Michael Floyd who are both slow and overrated.

How many years will we ignore the need of getting a legit pass rusher? This has been our biggest need for years and we can no longer ignore that fact. The best way to compete with New England is to put pressure on Brady and make him eat grass. The only way we get to the QB now is by sending 7 0r 8 guys. Its about time we had a real pass rush.

by bklynbrewcrew on Jan 17, 2012 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

This year ...

the draft is extremely deep at OLB – at least a dozen guys will go before the end of Day2, we could double dip at OLB after going WR in R1.

Santonio Holmes is at most a No2 receiver with a massively opinion of himself. Edwards has a single season in his career …. and he’s no superb? It is extremely rare to find an effective No1 WR in the middle rounds … almost unique in fact

Didn’t we try to fix the OLB issue in 2008? How well did that work out? the best past rusher in his rookie season that year was Trevor Scott taken in R6. You don’t need to panic and reach because of perceived need.

by kernowjet on Jan 17, 2012 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Decent Pass Rushers aren't hard to find either

How many elite WRs are taken outside the top 3 rounds? Not many.

by J-Nasty on Jan 17, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

You think Wilkerson wasn’t a better pick than Reed? Wowsers.

by Holgorsen on Jan 17, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

I would love to get a DE/Olb as good as pierre paul at 16, but i don’t know if there is any player in this draft as good as Jpp. Remember Barron is playing on a great defensive team, players tend to look better than they are with a good supporting cast around them. I think barron is a reach, but if trent Richardson would drop to 16 i might crap my pants waiting the 10 minutes untill Tannenbaum makes the pick.

by Chrebetfan on Jan 17, 2012 10:28 AM EST reply actions

No way....

There is just no way possible that we pass on Upshaw AND Mecrcilus for Barron… that’s just silly.

I don’t hate the Barron pick, as long as we trade down to get him and and still grab a pass rushing OLB with our extra 2nd round pick. I was thinking something like this:

1. Mark Barron SS (trade down to mid 20’s, round 1)
2. Markelle Martin FS (48th pick, round 2)
3. Nick Perry, Vinny Curry, or Ronnell Lewis (mid 50th pick, round 2)
4. Levy Adcock RT (80th pick, round 3)
5. Cordarro Law OLB (112th pick, round 4)
6. D’Anton Lynn CB (144th pick, round 5)
7. J.B. Shugarts OG/T (176th pick, round 6)
8. Marvin Jones WR (208th pick, round 7)

At least, that’d be my perfect world… but like I said, there’s NO WAY we pass on Upshaw or Mercillus if they fall to us.

*sigh*

and now I know how to ‘strike-through’

winning

by Re1gn on Jan 17, 2012 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

If we trade down to say 26 ...

the earliest R2 pick with be 59 and none of Perry, Curry or Lewis will be there at that point unless they have a colossally poor combine.

by kernowjet on Jan 17, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yea us picking Barron over any of those guys make me think that guy was doing crack when he made his mock draft.

by Holgorsen on Jan 17, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately I have kind of a feeling that this might be the direction we go in

Rex can’t have enough DBs and even Hellen Keller could see how awful our safety play was this year. I’m not saying it would be reactionary to NE, as I don’t think they’d see it that way, but if the scouts like what they see in Barron enough, I’m sure Rex and Tanny wouldn’t hesitate. Maybe it means a trade-down though, in which case it wouldn’t be so bad.

But I hope they realize that having a legit consistent pass rusher is a faaaaaaaar far bigger problem than safety man :\

by Exystence on Jan 17, 2012 11:23 AM EST reply actions

Safeties are rarely drafted in the first round

for a reason. Between 2000 and 2009 there were 12 safeties taken in the first round (an average of 1.2). 3 are/were great players, the rest range from decent to bust. I really think drafting a safety is fine if it is a game changing player, but this draft is far deeper in pass rushers (even ones that are not as risky picking for 3-4 Ds) and that will help us defend against teams like NE better than drafting a guy like Barron who has suspect coverage skills anyway and is not really a FS. So…I agree but I hope they see this too.

by Buzzy on Jan 17, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

I think this year though there's much more hope for us getting a pass rusher too

For internal reasons beyond the external ones you mentioned—in past seasons we’ve had “projects” of sorts on the team. In ‘09 and ’10 we had Gholston who Rex thought he could mold. Last season there was Westerman. Both ended in pretty abject failure, I’d say. Maybin stepped in to some degree but even Rex has to see that he isn’t nearly enough. Also, Bryan Thomas is likely gone and Calvin Pace sucked at pass rushing (which I dunno if anyone was surprised at that). So yeah.

by Exystence on Jan 17, 2012 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Upshaw or bust.

Upshaw is our guy. Mercilus would be a risky pick. Barron is a reach.

by Holgorsen on Jan 17, 2012 12:05 PM EST reply actions

pass rusher and safety 1 and 1A?

Id take a top pass rusher first but if none are available safety is a big need for us. remember that our best safeties are free agents and TEs are becoming dominant in this league, not just for the pats. I dont know if Barron will be a sure thing but we need some bodies in there. I think the second round at the latest for a safety and we might also have to fill it through free agency. WRs can be had later or through FA. RB is not as dire a need IF we fill the spot left by Wayne Hunter when we cut him.
