What is the story

I know this post is too short, but I could not get the fan shot to work.

I know that Bill B was our coach for one day, before he went to the Pats. But I have no idea why he did so. I believe we even announced he was our new coach and set up a press conference. I believe he wrote "I quit" on a napkin at the presser and walked out. But I have no idea what was true and what is not. If anyone know the full story. I would like the know the true story and the details why this occurred, and who was the coach we ended up with. Thanks

He wrote on a piece of paper. “I resign as HC of NYJ,” on a piece of paper just before his introductory press conference. It came as a shock to everybody.

Basically, Belichick didn't want to ever be in a position, unsure of ownership support

as he was with Cleveland. Also, Bill Parcells would still be above him, with the potential to overrule his personnel or coaching decisions. With New England he would have the full support of the owner, who he had a good relationship with, and control over the draft, personnel decisions, and game-planning. A much better situation.

Pete Carroll only returned to coaching in the NFL if he could have that control he never had in NE, and Jeff Fisher ultimately decided against Miami because GM Jeff Ireland came with the position. At this point in his career, Fisher wants his own guys in there with him.

Belichick had his own scouting system that he had begun to develop in Cleveland with Michael Lombardi, and he wanted to perfect and install that system, plus his own team-building philosophy, with his own hand-picked people, and was willing to succeed or fail on that basis. All out from under Bill Parcells’ shadow.

Keep the faith!

I also believe the Jets’ ownership situation was unclear at the time, which played into it.

I think it’s fair to say he never perfected the scouting system. I don’t have numbers off the top of my head, but it’s gotta be like 95% of his draft picks are busts.

are you talking about Belichick's scouting system?

he’s struck gold a few times like with Gronk and Hernandez, but he’s also flopped at times too. Anybody remember Chad Jackson?

by darshv3 on Jan 15, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Chad Jackson and Laurence Maroney

were horrible picks that went against the recommendations of the scouting staff, for whatever reason. It’s had its share of successes and failures over the years, but he’s done okay in his years with NE.

per wikipedia
New England Patriots (1996)

After leaving Cleveland, Belichick served under Parcells again as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach with the Patriots for the 1996 season. The Patriots finished with an 11-5 record, won the AFC championship, but lost to the Green Bay Packers at Super Bowl XXXI.

New York Jets

Soon after Super Bowl XXXI, Belichick (and most of the Patriots assistant coaches) migrated with Parcells to the New York Jets. Belichick served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Jets from 1997 to 1999. When Parcells stepped down as head coach in 1999, he had already arranged with team management to have Belichick succeed him. However, Belichick would be the New York Jets’ head coach for only one day. When Belichick was introduced as head coach to the media—the day after his hiring was publicized—he turned it into a surprise-resignation announcement. Before taking the podium, he scrawled a resignation note on a sheet of loose leaf paper that read, in its entirety, “I resign as HC of the NYJ.” He then delivered a half-hour speech explaining his resignation to the assembled press corps.9

Soon after this bizarre turn of events, he was introduced as the New England Patriots’ new head coach; the team had tried to hire him away from Parcells/the Jets in the past. Parcells and the Jets claimed that Belichick was still under contract to the Jets, and demanded compensation from the Patriots. NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue agreed, and the Patriots gave the Jets a first-round draft pick in 2000 in exchange for the right to hire Belichick.10

Bill Belichick was named New England Patriots head coach in 2000, succeeding Pete Carroll.

Many forget that Belicheck was twice HC of the NYJ but never during the season

When Belicheck was hired by Hess, they made him the HC and Parcells was hired as a consultant. Kraft balked and argued that Parcells was the de fact HC while still under contract as the same with NE. Jets sent compensation up there and hired Parcells as the HC, demoting Belicheck but with a clause that he would eventually succeed Parcells.

When Hess passed away, and Woddy bought the team, it seems Kraft had been luring Belicheck. So Parcells stepped down enacting the clause that made Belicheck the HC thereby securing the Jets compensation for the lateral move.

Belicheck stated that any deal he had with Hess died with Hess. He also said he was unsure of the direction of the organization, etc, etc. But in all the time he spent with the Jets, he never sold his NE home, so it seems he may also have had an understanding with Kraft all along.

this type of reality show seems to happen to us. you could say the rex ryan jets were also a reality show. i mean, they were on hard knocks. i can’t say i’m not looking forward to bellicheck retiring. he’s got to do it some time. he can’t do this forever

But I would rather see Brady retire first

That way, we will get to see Belicheck struggle for a few years without him.

Drafting C.Upshaw...

… could speed up the process. I envision a M. Lewis type hit on Brady by the hard hitting OLB.

by BachsOfRain on Jan 15, 2012 6:27 PM EST reply actions

does upshaw have to be on our team to do that ?

i would be still fun to watch if he was in a bills uniform

if its for you it won't pass you

Thanks to all

It is an unbelievable story, as unbelievable as Brady being a sixth round draft pick.

Just think of everythimg that followed it,

I believe every Pats fan owes us a HUGE “Thank you”! I have a friend that went to Uconn and is a Pats fan… every time he rubs Brady in my face, I stuff a “You’re welcome!” back down his throat.
