The second round of the NFL Playoffs begins today. What looks like the best game on paper leads things off. The Saints head to California to take on perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the 2011 season, Jim Harbaugh's 49ers. This provides a textbook matchup between two strengths, New Orelans' elite offense against San Francisco's elite defense.
I like the Saints in this one. I think it is very difficult to pick against Drew Brees. As good of a job as Jim Harbaugh has done with Alex Smith, I think this is where Smith's carriage turns into a pumpkin. The Niners have done a great job putting Smith into good positions. In this game, he is going to have to elevate his game for his team to win. San Francisco has a good defense, but Brees is going to put points on the board. I am not convinced Smith is capable putting up the kind of points he needs to.

Terrible PI call IMO and a no call for head to head. These Refs won’t be doing games for awhile if this continues.
That head to head is way too clean to be missed by the refs.

If thats not a rule than my bad… I def thought there was a rule that you cant lead with your head.

yeah my dad and I were discussing it.
I thought it was a blatant helmet to helmet that warranted a penalty. But because of the rules now, it was a correct no call. IMO leading with your helmet is worse than defenseless.
You have to lead with your helmet
Otherwise, the defenders would be getting killed. The issue is that when a receiver hasn’t prepared to be hit, and lower their head, the defender doesn’t need to lower his yet. I actually believe it’s a stupid rule.

There is a difference, I was taught always lead with the should… you never ever put head down to the ground. Thats how you end up with hits like that. My hope is that the NFL instead of keeping the vague rules says that you may not lead with the crown of your helmet into any tackle. Incidental helmet to helmet contact occurs when you in the process of tackling and the ball carrier makes an abrupt duck attempting to avoid the tackle.

its true. but they also protect against the more serious ones that cant be prevented.
like getting hit and smacking your head on the ground or running into another player while tripped up.
But its the padding inside that does that work.
Its the hard exterior that injures others

Anyone else watching this game and thinking that Alex Smith is like Sanchez should be? Relies of the run of Frank Gore and PA. Good with short intermediate routes and should throw deep 3-8 times a game mostly to keep the defenses off balance. Plus a talented D and weak division leads to playoffs.
Weak division if you must say, but the 49ers are much better/talented then the Jets
I’ll take Davis over Keller, Gore of Greene, and their whole defense over the Jets defense except Revis.

Try to stuff the run. Give up the short passes, and prevent the long ball. the saints live off the long ball, and Brees isn’t patient enough to just keep dinking and dunking.

The problem is
The “’experts” are not giving anyone else on the team credit for their wins. The Broncos defense has been playing really well lately but you rarely hear about them. Tebow has done less than Sanchez during the playoffs but Tebow is getting all of the credit. That’s just sickening.

offense then goes 3 and out on about 10 consecutive drives
defense gets gassed and gives up some plays/points
offense starts to struggle and turn the ball over OR they come up with just enough in the end to win.

The Jets season rewind
Defense and special teams plays lights out, creating turnovers giving the offense short fields. The offense doesn’t take advantage of the turnovers scoring two TDs but but settle for three FGs. Then comes the consistent three and outs, the defense gets tired and gives up a big play. Then when the offense back is against the wall, they start to call and make some good plays, but is it too late?
The 49ers have them right where they want them.
A Field Goal gives the lead ( David Akers is a beast in the playoffs ) and you could still get a TD but they probably wont. Worst Red Zone Offense in the NFL.
