Todd Haley to Interview With New York Jets
Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley will interview with the Jets today according to Cimini.
Former Chiefs coach Todd Haley is visiting the Jets Wednesday to meet with Rex Ryan about a possible position on his coaching staff
This certainly makes sense in light of the rumors Haley and new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano have been talking about joining up to run an NFL offense just as they did in Dallas in 2006. Haley was the Cowboys' wide receivers coach, and the Jets just announced their own receivers coach, Henry Ellard, will not return. Mike Tannenbaum and Haley have a relationship from when they worked together during the Parcells years breaking into the league.
I am not a huge fan of the Sparano hire on its own. We will have plenty of time to go into detail there. A Sparano/Haley combo, though, would have me rethinking my position. Sparano has good experience building a good run game. Haley has built good passing games. They had a lot of success that year in Dallas.

If I wasn't in the middle of writing a synthesis paper (all-nighter)
I would enjoy this all so much more. I barely even reacted to it when I saw it. But if Haley comes in too, that would make everything sweeter.
He's definitely proven himself as our resident EXTRA! EXTRA! guy

Of course, bringing in two former head coaches as offensive coordinators to run the offense is
another sign Rex will have 0 involvement on offense again
might that not be a good thing?
Rex will work with Pertinent on calling defensive plays. His offensive involvement should be limited to direction, if that. And giving playcalling duties to a ground and pound guy might be his way of setting direction.

Well, he needs to know what is going on with half his team
by CervezaVerde on Jan 11, 2012 9:28 AM EST up reply actions
True, but...
…Rex’s knowledge level when it comes to offenses isn’t all that good. Personally, I think having two guys with top level leadership experience who can run the offense with minimal oversight from Rex is probably for the best. Let Rex do what he does best, run the Defense and motivate the team as a whole. Then let Tony and Todd do what they do best and whip this offense into shape.

That's not being a HC
Rex’s knowledge level when it comes to offenses isn’t all that good.
Rex should know his offense. Thats the point.

Agreed
but hopefully, Rex will make an effort to learn from Sparano and Haley if Haley is hired.

Haley and Sparano would be an interesting option.
Much more so than either on their own. It also helps that they have experience working together in Dallas.

At least The Jets finally realized that they need a Rex on the offensive side of the ball
Get busy winning or get busy losing.
Think about Haleys effect on Holmes
Haley will effect the direction of the the entire, WR Corp, this will no longer be an under achieving group. Todd is a Parcells coach will be a taskmaster.
Understand Haley to be Hired as Assistant Head Coach (Callahans spot)
Makes more money than Sparano, may have more input into the desogn of the offense. Thank goodness Sparano have worked before together effectively.
Remember, after the KC game, How Haley gushed over Woody’s support of Rex, hmmmm ?
I thought Haley was going to be Asst for Passing Game
which was more of Ellard’s spot. They’re going to need someone solid to shore up next year’s O-line, though.
A cautionary statement on these coaches: no matter how good they are, if Mark Sanchez can’t throw a simple pass, they, too, will be run out of town
I think if Sanchez shows he can't throw a simple pass next year...
with new coordinators, he will go before the coordinators do. Schotty being gone buys him another year. If he doesn’t show any growth, etc… he’ll be done here.
Give him 3 seconds
and he’ll give you plenty of “simple” passes completed. Gotta fix that right tackle spot and get him at least one WR who can stretch the field! Plus get the run game back out of the bottom third of the league! They went from 4th last year to 22nd this year!
Even with all the holes on offense in the run game, on the line, and at WR, Sanchez’s numbers still improved. That’s pretty amazing if you ask me.

He threw more passes. He wasn’t more efficient. He didn’t improve. He simply increased volume.
Improvement is getting better results with equal/lesser opportunities.
Look at the percentages.
Volume or not, the percentages don’t lie. You do remember math right?
His completion percentage increased from 54.8% last year to 56.7% this year. That’s IMPROVEMENT and has nothing to do with volume. His QB rating improved also, which is a baffling calculation that takes several statistical categories into account, again, not solely based on number of throws, from 75.3 to 78.2.
These aren’t amazing improvements, but they are IMPROVEMENTS. Like I said, it’s amazing he improved at all with the lack of support he had.

I dont think your going to sway cracks opinion
I think most of us are on the “if sanchez doesnt show major improvement in his game, he better gtfo bandwagon” I would love to see sanchez be the next brees or brady. but its never going to happen. were going to just hope he can be like an eli manning. i think thats as good as hes going to get
With better right tackle play, how different would the season have been?
Better running game
Better passing game
Less pressure on the D
Playoffs?
It’s a game of inches
Hence the fact that we need a veteran backup.
Sparano knows this, just look at the success they had when Henne went down. Having Matt Moore there was one of the better decisions they made this season.
This would make me happy
The only concern would be playcalling. I’m not sure that Sparano will mix things up enough to keep a defense off-balance. For the record, I am really hoping he does.
"I just build our guys up. If it's trash talking that I believe in our football team, then, yes, I agree with that statement. I'm the biggest trash talker there is." Rex Ryan
Although Haley would be a great choice to get Santonio to man up
Haley doesn’t take any crap. Unfortunately, the Jets need someone like that on their coaching staff.

I like your use of the word "unfortunately"
It would be so nice to think we have high character guys in our locker room that don’t need that kind of thing…… but clearly we don’t. Not saying we don’t have our share of good guys and maybe the bad apples are few and far between (cough Holmes cough).
In this day and age of high salaries
It is all too common that teams get stuck with a Diva like Holmes. The key is to not let the tail wag the dog. If he doesn’t get the number of targets/catches he wants? Too damn bad. This is a team game and I think we don’t have a lot of problem players. The issue was how the coaching staff dealt with the few bad apples we did have.

Cimini reports a week or so ago that Cavanaugh should expect the pink slip.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!

If Cavanaugh stays, its not about merit but continuity
IMO Sparanos guy would be Brian Dabol (TS Offensive Coordiator) as QB Coach, step down for Dabol. BD was a former QB coach with the Jets, extensive knowlege of Schottys old system, understands where Sparano wants to go
New Era begins
No more pillow talk and no more saying players are better than they really are. We have two good coaches who will focus on their specific area and I think that will help the team. The only problem i see is on 3 and 2 and what call they make, that is when Rex needs to step in so that the coaches are not at each other neck for a failed 3 and short.
I like Haley
Haley did a real good job as OC of the Cardinals so I would welcome his addition. If we hire Haley I want him calling the plays and Sparano handling the OL. I cant see Haley coming on as a WR coach when the Cardinals want him as their OC.
If Haley is the playcaller and works with Sparano this can work out but if Sparano is the one calling plays we will once again have a garbage offense. It is also very important to hire a top notch QB coach.
will it work?
I would actually prefer Haley to Sparano but would also look forward to both of them working together. The question I have is how does this work exactly? I know Callahan was an asst. head coach but I thought that was just to keep him happy and paid more. He worked the O line and he never called plays or really had much input it seemed. Will Haley go for that? I like what he did in Arizona, and would prefer his offense but Sparano is definitely more in line with Rex’s philosophy so I am sure that is why he is there. We will see. I am also surprised teams are not more interested in hiring Haley as a full O coordinator. Maybe they are.
Cardinals want Haley
and he will most likely go there if he doesnt come here. Haley is a good coordinator and I would feel a hell of a lot better about things if he comes aboard. Sparano on the other hand is a conservative boring coach.
Sparano has no experience working with QBs and he has never coached a prolific offense. He is not even an upgrade over Schotty. There is good reason why Miami fans are laughing at us right now.
Please Jets hire Todd Haley and let him run the offense because Sparano cannot be the guy calling the plays unless we want to continue to suck on offense.

Everybody is a Head Coach here. Yaaaayyyy.
It will be Dallas 2006
Found a list of coaches from the cowboys in 06 under Parcells. I guess Rex liked what they did there. Interestingly this was right after Peyton left for Dallas and the article said he tried to bring Sparano with him as an OC but Parcells denied permission to talk with new orleans…

Was that due to coaching or an inept QB?
Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

Who cares
They ranked 5th in total offense! 5th in passing and 13th in rushing. 4th in scoring! Now, I’m not saying the Jets will be just like the 06 Cowboys, but if historical performance means anything, this looks like a good move to help the Jets offense get on the right track.
by struckanerve9 on Jan 11, 2012 11:45 AM EST up reply actions
You know what...
the Patriots haven’t won a playoff game since 2007/08. Are they a bad team offensively?
Besides, the coaching staff of the 06 Cowboys didn’t stay together long after that season.
Come on man, if you can’t see that Haley and Sparano would be an improvement over Schotty based on their historical performance you simply aren’t looking.
as head coaches they have to stretch themselves out to look at everything.
refined down to a smaller role, they could be better. Not saying they are but its possible taking away some of the toys allows them to focus on what they know really well.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!
Now lets get a G-D snack!!!

Okay I want Haley
1. Compliments Sparano
2.The Best Guy to straighten out Holmes
3. Develop young WR’s, decide on Plax
Give him
A. Title Ass’t Head Coach, in charge of the Passing Attack, ( Callahan Position)
B. 20% over Callahans Salary ( no nickel and diming here)
C. get to pick the QB coach
D.Give the authority to pick 3rd and 7th round pick, plus input ib free agency
I understand the concerns...
I am not sold on Sparano either. On the 2006 team I think Bledsoe started the season and they changed the offense midway so a top 5 scoring offense is not a bad year . Sparano. I like Haley more and he did have a good record as an o coordinator in zona. from wikipedia on haley:
Under Haley’s guidance, the Cardinals offense in 2008 was one of the league’s most innovative and explosive units.2 Arizona tied for third in the league in scoring, registering a franchise-record 427 points (26.7 ppg). The Cardinals were fourth in total offense, averaging 365.8 yards per game. Arizona was second in the league in passing offense (292.1 ypg) and ranked sixth in the NFL with 20.5 first downs per game. The Cardinals finished the season with a 9-7 record and a playoff berth after winning the NFC West Division title. The Cardinals went on to appear in their first Super Bowl in franchise history after the team scored more than 30 points in each of its three playoff games.
Don't forget Haley had a 2 big and fast WR's in Boldin and Fitz
We don’t have those guys….yet
Love with a LEO is like a drug.. One taste and your addicted!
this
is the only thing that can make me happy about signing sparano cuz it is true that they will ground and pound with sparano which means we need a better back. greene is a change of pace guy, and hopefully he can improve our offensive line while haley will concentrate on the passing game and get holmes and keller more involved. i think we just need a new offensive system and get away from the complexity since our team lost interest in it. now all we need to get is some awesome pass rushers and some safeties and we can climb back to the top.
If Rex Ryan does not install some form of discipline with his coaching staff that feeds down
to his players his HC days are numbered.
