Brian Schottenheimer to Step Down as Offensive Coordinator

Amidst the whirlwind of news tonight, there are confirmed reports that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has decided to step down from his position. He has apparently told the team that he is stepping down and will no longer serve. Jet fans, your dreams have come true.

I don't believe I need to get into the details of how important this is to the team. It's difficult to find even a single defender of Schottenheimer anymore. There will be plenty of time in the coming days to discuss who will replace Schottenheimer, however I suspect the Jets will move quickly to replace him. My gut feeling is that Todd Haley and Tony Sparano will come to the Jets as a joint package, forming a passing and running game duo. I think that may be one of the best possible scenarios, as the Jets try to replace Bill Callahan, the outgoing offensive line guru. In any case, please celebrate below and let us know who you would like to replace Brian Schottenheimer.

But

who will the Jets fans blame in 2012 if Schotty is gone?

by PVS53 on Jan 11, 2012 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

I have a 2012 preseason list

for the fans to chose from. The top name on the list is – Sparano. He will probably get a pass for the first 4 games before he gets ripped apart like Schotty.

Crazy Bad

Convinced an entire org to trade multiple firsts for Carson Palmer. A clearly over the hill Carson Palmer. A guy who hadn’t had a good season in quite a while. Jets need a steady hand, not him

by bcolt44 on Jan 10, 2012 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

I would believe this, since he worked with Palmer is Cinci

but he won’t be HC here. His influence on trades and FA moves would be moderate at the very most.

Peter King

Told the story about how Hue negotiated directly with MIke Brown. Mike T values position coaches input on player acquisitions (Slauson/Hunter by Callahan, Kellen Clemens by Schottenheimer, Bart/Leonhard by Rex among others). Someone who is THAT off about QB value is not someone I want near the team.

That said, it looks like Tony. And we are destined to years of stupid Sopranos jokes.

by bcolt44 on Jan 10, 2012 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

Well then it's the Raiders fault for letting their brand new HC negotiate trades

that won’t be happening here. Input valued or not.

Like you said, it’s probably Sparano, and all the stupid jokes that will follow.

Great solution.

My feeling was that the team was freeing up some money by letting Ellard and Callahan go, as well as Weeks. I think they were ready to fire him, but this works out for both so Schotty can say he wasn’t fired, while the team saves some money.

Great news

I’m skeptical of Sparano and I really really don’t like Todd Haley and how he used personnel in KC and frankly, I think he’s a dick.

In terms of candidates, I heard Marty Schottenheimer is trying to get back in the NFL. But seriously, I’m not really sure “Failed Head Coach” whether Haley, Sparano or Jackson is the route we want to go. Out of those, Sparano sounds best, but me no likey.

Why not sparano?

He did a good job with garbage in MIA. Their run game was the bread and butter for the past 2 seasons was pretty solid.

guess what? Jets are a suppose to be a RUN first team. and now we get a guy that utilizes tons of runs, play-actions and isnt afraid of the deep pass…. Sparano now has better weapons to use on the Jets… now all we need is a solid QB coach, and we will may see a sanchez unlike we have ever seen before!

Dolfan word on this

It’s obviously really good for you guys to step down. And I also think it’s really good that Sparano and Haley are coming in for you guys.

For those scared of Sparano, don’t be. He may not be a good head coach, but he is a heck of a line coach and players LOVE HIM. He is a great speaker and even when we were 0-7 the players didn’t quit on him and tried to save his job. When he solely focuses on the o-line he can make a formidable group. Look at what he did in Dallas. He made a line consisting of Gurode, Colombo, and Davis, all I’m pretty sure were pro bowlers at some time. You’re line will improve greatly with Sparano.

Haley is a great pick-up, as long as he isn’t a douche and doesn’t fight Santonio. He led some great offenses in Arizona and I think he could play to your strengths, which is to run to set up the pass. Mark Sanchez for some reason reminds me of Cassel: Someone who isn’t going to win the game by throwing all the time but will manage the game well.

Look at KC’s offense in 2010 with a healthy Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs ran the ball 35 TIMES A GAME. This year you guys ran 27 times a game. Matt Cassel in ’08 threw the ball an average of 30 times a game, which is a PERFECT number for Sanchez. This year Sanchez threw it 34 times, but factor in the 27 runs and you get not so good of a number.

You guys should be a lot better on offense next year, though I think you need to add another WR, RT, and another RB with LT maybe retiring.

David Lee is the one who pulled out the Wildcat

Without it we’d be talking about the below average offense Miami had during his entire tenure. He’s never been an OC and as far as I can tell his biggest accomplishment is having his OL that were drafted in the 1st/2nd round pan out. There’s reason for trepidation, I don’t know if he’s really anything more than a line coach, but he can’t possibly be worse than Young Marty.

All the line success he brought to us over the years, all the shit spun into gold stories like Slauson Woody and Moore.

One bad year thanks to cheapness by Johnson and Mike T, where the gave Bill a bench player to start, one year of regression that frankly should not have surprised anyway due to personnel, and Callahan is to blame?

He stunk this year

Look at how the line fell apart without Mangold. This guy is only as good as the players he is handed. I would bet money he had input into that awful Vlad pick and he was the guy who thought he could make Hunter good. All the line success makes me laugh, he was handed a bunch of pro bowlers like Woody, Faneca, Mangold and DBrick.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

by YankeesJets on Jan 11, 2012 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

Sure talent is involved, but he coached all of those men into success stories

with the exception of Faneca, who was just a FA upgrade. Woody Slauson Moore and Brick were talented but not pro bowl material until coached as a cohesive line unit. He could not have succeeded without Mangold, no one could have. When you lose your Center, you have no line cohesion. I was actually seriously impressed with the job he did with rookie UDFA Baxter.

I don’t see how you could hand him Hunter as a starter and expect him to keep the line good. Did Brick and Moore regress? Yes, they sure did. When your tackle blows his assignment every single play, the line will be chaotic.

Woody was a pro bowler before he came here and DBrick was the #4 pick in the draft for a reason

Sure he did a nice job Moore and Slauson, but the games without Mangold were very telling. Ive seen plenty of teams lose players on the line and still made adjustments to make things work. This team looked lost without Mangold and thats on the OC. Its not what you do with your starters, its what you do with your backups. Thats what separates the good coaches from the great one. I just want a clean slate on offense. If it was up to me, Id can everybody involved with the offense.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

Agree wiht most of what you said.

However, Mangold is the best at his position. Plus Wayne Hunter was already a weak link. Two week links on the line kills anything going.
Still, its going to be telling what happens next year.

I don't hink he did a bad job this year.

But sometimes you need to shake things up and make a change. As bad as Hunter was, everyone on the O-line except maybe for Slausen was not as good as last year. Maybe everyone was getting too comfortable with each other. I was hoping for a major coaching shake-up because when Rex tells you he doesn’t have the pulse of his team, it also means the other coaches don’t either or they are looking at their group with rose colored glasses. Either way they are not giving Rex accurate feedback. New coaches need to prove themselves, consequently the players need to step it up.

Now that I think about it, I'm kinda pissed

It seems to me either they got taken off guard by Schotty stepping down and rushed into getting a new guy (which I doubt), or they had Sporano in the bag the whole time and were letting Schotty hang around as a favor to him to get the J-Ville job, then allowed him to “step down” when Jacksonville decided on Mularky… and in turn may not have done their due diligence in a search (much more likely). Either way, not a good look IMO. I think they could’ve done quite better than Sporano.

The problem with having assloads of talent is that you'll go high in the draft

and spend at least the beginning of your career with some crappy doomed mid-market franchise.

I always thought he shouldve went earlier.

I dont think Hue would be the best fit honestly

The guy threw his team under the bus when they lost and he helped negotiate that awful Palmer deal and is now denying it. Seems like a low character kind of guy.

IDK about him either

I don’t think hes great but anything over shotty.

by sp0rtsfan86 on Jan 11, 2012 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

There are character concerns, but his record of improving offenses and positions is undeniable

I do consider the reports of him selling his team out and negotiating the Palmer trade to reliable. 1.It’s the Raiders, I have yet to see a HC not neck deep in dysfunction there and 2. Influence or not, he would never be given the opportunity to negotiate a trade here.

He would certainly have input and in the past the HC problems in Oakland were due to Al Davis

Seems Hue’s miscues came after Al was pushing up the daisies. I wouldnt have been opposed to Hue but its not like he is worlds better than Sparano. Sparano is a Parcells guy, so he cant be too bad.

I would've just as soon went with a lesser known position coach

I know a Tom Clements was likely unrealistic, but a guy like that or Joe Lombardi would’ve been ideal, even Haley I think wouldve been better despite being a douche. Sporano is as unproven as all of them. The point isn’t so much the names because there’s plenty of great offensive minds out there, some of whom are almost certainly better than Sporano, that I simply don’t know about, but the Jets did nothing to try to uncover them as far as I can tell because their mind was set on a guy who’s resume ain’t all that.

Sparano is unproven? The guy has done something Rex never did...win the division.

In 06 he was the playcaller of the Cowboys offense, he did a pretty damn good job too. I like that he is familiar with our division.

Allegedly. And that was as a head coach based off a gimmick someone else pulled out.

If he was the one calling plays in the Seahawks/Romo fumble game, it’s nothing to be real excited about, he went into a shell with an air it out QB against a secondary playing a guy that was signed the week before the playoff game. It was Schotty-esque.

Did anybody read the Don Banks article on coaching? The one where he said Schotty would be a good coach? I would love to see Sanchez and the Jets offense take huge steps forward, just b/c it would prove him wrong.

Custer was dead last in his class at West Point but the army took him anyway because the Civil War was on and they had no choice.

He rode some coat tails, made himself look good, then finally got the chance to lead, and completely screwed it all up. Got himself, his brother, some cousins, and a couple hundred other guys killed.
