State of the Union : The WRs
I've been thinking a lot lately, as I'm sure many of you have, about various problems on the Jet's roster and what could be done to help going into next season. This should be the first of several posts about different positons and their current status verse potential offseason upgrades. I'm starting off with the WRs since the recent release of our good friend Braylon Edwards in addition to Santonio Holmes recent meltdown/temper tantrums has brought the state of the WR corps to the forefront.
Surprisingly enough, I actually believe we need very little tinkering, for a change, at the WR spot. One of the Jet's biggest problems during the Mark Sanchez era is the lack of consistency at arguably the most vital position for a young QBs development. It seems like as soon as Mark gets comfortable with any particular WR the team either demotes (Cotchery from 09-10) or jettisons them completely (Edwards/Cotchery 10-11). The only change I would suggest in this offseason is bringing back Edwards. I understand the injury concerns, but he's still young and resilient, and his production in 2010 can't be overstated - 53 receptions for 904 yards (17.1 ypc) and 7 TDs, not to mention his stellar blocking abilities. Oh, and he only had one drop all season, so for all of you who continue to criticize his "bad hands," stop living in the freakin' past! The most important aspect of bringing Bray back though is his chemistry with Sanchez and Mark trusting that when the game is on the line he can throw up that deep ball that was so sorely lacking from our offense this year.
The rest of our WR group should be essentially left intact. Yeah, I'm as pissed as anyone at Holmes' ridiculous antics throughout the season, but most "star" receivers in this league - and whether he is or not, we certainly gave him the contract of one - are divas and can't handle losing. Calvin Johnson and Andre Johnson are the exceptions, not the rule. With Bray drawing deep coverage and opening up space for Tone, I really believe he'll fall back in line. Remember, before the offensive meltdown this year, he was generally considered a hard worker who stayed after practice and tried to help the younger receivers. Even with all the problems, his production wasn't terrible - 51 rec 654 yds 8 TDs, compared to 52 rec 746 yds and 6 TDs in 2010. I think reuniting him with his old pal Braylon is the perfect cure for what ails Holmes, not to mention I'm not quite ready to take a 7+ million dollar dump on the cap. I think some of you guys are underestimating just how detrimental that would be to adding the pieces the Jets need for a real championship run next year.
The rest of our WR corps is solid, at worst no less effective than the 3,4,5 guys we've had in the previous three seasons, and at best more talented and with a higher reward potential. Let me elaborate. We bring back Plax with a short term, low base, high incentive contract for one or two seasons. He's near the end, but had a decent enough season - 45 rec 612 yds 8 TDs - ironically almost identical to Santonio's stat line. The biggest mistake we made with Plax is the same mistake we made with LDT last season. In having him play over %80 of our offensive snaps, we took an aging star who can still produce situationally and wore him down so that by the end of the season there was almost nothing left in the tank. Look how much more effective and spry Tomlinson was late in the season, specifically against Miami, when not asked to carry the load of a starter. Plax would make a great option in 3 or 4 receiver sets and alternating time with Kerley in the slot.
Kerley was probably the brightest spot amongst our WRs and really made his 5th round selection look like a great decision. His 29 rec for 314 yds and 1 TD may not seem like much, but considering he didn't start until Week 5 and missed another two games due to injury they're pretty solid numbers. Cotchery put up 41 rec for 433 yds and 2 TDs in 2010 and I think we can expect at leat as much from Kerley next year, minus the injuries and plus the ability to be a dangerous punt returner if he can figure out how to hold onto the ball! And whether the numbers back it up or not, it just felt like he had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, something that can't necessarily be quantified but was, I thought, one of Cotchery's biggest assets as well. I still remember JCo on a critical third down play last season coming up gimpy only to realize Sanchez was looking his way and proceed to go full on horizontol to make the conversion before limping off the field in considerable groin - related pain - awww, memories. Anyway, Kerley seems to have a similar skillset and made great strides in making making me forget my initial outrage at releasing JCo.
The X - factor is that fifth receiver slot. I fully agree with the rest of you that drafting a tall, fast WR is important, but I just don't know that it's particularly vital to our immediate success. our needs at S, RT, and LB seem more pressing. I think we can wait until the third round and pick up a guy like Nick Toon out of Wisconsin - at 6'3" 220lbs, he has the size to fight for the ball and is rumored to have sub 4.5 40 speed. If he's willing to throw those blocks like us Jets fans love to see out of our receivers I'm thinking we've got a Braylon Edwards junior on our hands. Mid - third might be a stretch, but he's ranked as the 7th or 8th best WR in the draft and with the 2 to 4 compensatory picks we're slated to receive, we could probably trade up to the early second, late third to grab him without sacrificing any of our base picks. I don't want to completely discount Patrick Turner either. After spending most of the season as I can only imagine a practice field tackling dummy, he showed some signs of what the Jets saw in him when they acquired him in 2010. Over the last six games of the season, he had 8 rec for 96 yds and a big TD against Miami that gave us a shot at coming back before Sanchez's last pick. And he's not a burner (4.65 40), but at 6'5" 220lbs has the size to fight for balls and let his presence be felt underneath. I suppose I should at least mention Eron Riley, who is on his fourth team since being signed as a UDFA last year and has yet to see the field on game day. In a word, useless.
Well, that about sums it up. Sorry to go on for so long - it seems to be a problem I have whenever I write one of these things. I start off with a short, concise idea, and 1000+ words later realize it's probably time to shut up. I'm sure it doen't help that I generally decide to post at some random hour of the night when I'm half - asleep, considering I have the attention span of a guppy even when well rested! Anyway, let me know what you guys think below. This is the first piece I've done in a while that was researched and not just an off the cuff opinion, so I hope it's helpful.

If we bring back Bray and Plax, we don't need to draft a WR.
We’d be plenty deep. Bray, Plax, Tone, Kerley and Turner is a nice corps. Hopefully we still have a TE corps of Keller, Cumberland and Baker. If we do, thats a pretty dynamic group of pass catchers.
THIS...
Bring back Bray and Plax. Hopefully, this would allow us to address other positions in the draft and FA. We still desperately need a RT, OLB, and a S( 2 if you ask me ). Luckily I think we’ll be able to fill most of these positions in the off season, here’s to hoping Tanny gets it right now that he has the entire off season to work with.
Round 1: Courtney Upshaw (OLB)
Round 2: Markelle Martin (FS)
Round 3: Levey Adcock (RT)
Round 4: Michael Williams (TE) / Tavon Wilson (SS)
Can’t make up my mind in the 4th. I like Wilson as Smith’s replacement but Williams’ is a good blocking TE that can catch with absolutely monstrous numbers(Height: 6-6. Weight: 270.
Projected 40 Time: 4.77 —per Walterfootball.com).
Just my $0.02 but I don’t see WR as big of a need as OC, especially if we bring back Braylon… fingers crossed.
Agreed
but Tone and Bray are still approaching 30 and we need to think about the future. Kerley and Turner look good, but it’s still too early to tell if either of them will be a legit #1 or 2 in the future. I do think we have more pressing needs in the draft, but it looks like we’ll have 9 or 10 picks this year, so grabbing a WR prospect in the middle rounds doesn’t seem like much of a stretch. This year’s pretty deep at WR so even the fourth or fifth might land us a decent one.
On a side note, I was at the game yesterday, and Upshaw looked great, so I agree he should be our target in the mid 1st if he doesn’t move up too far.
Also
to @re1gn, I don’t think our WRs or draft selections have anything to do with the OC. I agree completely with getting a new OC, but I don’t see how this relates to what we do at any particular position. And I think if Cumberland’s healthy and Baker continues to improve, there’s no reason to burn a pick on TE. That could be exactly the pick we use on a WR.
I meant more along the lines of having an OC that uses WRs effectively. I’m starting to think that we could draft the next Calvin/Andre Johnson and Shotty would still find a way to misuse them.
Honestly, I kind of want to grab Barron in the 1st and Martin in the 2nd but aside from that NEVER happening I can’t pass on Upshaw if he’s still available.
The Michael Williams pick is more of a pipe dream than anything. A big blocking TE with good hands and a decent 40, could be a nasty tandem with Keller in 2 TE sets. I guess I just like Williams at that round more than I do any projected WR.
Hallelujah!
Schotty is no more. I agree with your point, I guess I just misunderstood at first, but thank Buddha we don’t have that problem to worry about anymore! I’ve also been impressed with Barron, but think he might be a reach at 16. Upshaw might already be gone, so it’s a tossup, but there’s no way we land both in the first round. I definitely agree we need to focus on S/LB in the first two rounds and might be set at WR in the immediate future. My concern is drafting for the future – it’s always good to have a couple WR prospects around. It’s a position that can pay dividends from almost any round.
Doesn’t matter WHO we have unless we have a play-caller that can formulate plays that open them up to mismatches, and have the balls to call those plays.

Good Post
Bring back Braylon and draft Toon for the future….Plax is a redzone target only so stay or go with him………does not matter to me once we get Braylon back.
+1
One of my main reasons for drafting a WR is I don’t know if they’ll resign Plax, and even if they do he won’t have more than a year or two left. Toon has the size to replace the redzone production when we do lose Plax.
No, No, No
Edwards is not a number one replacement, Burress should be in the same place now that Owens and Moss are and Holmes is a disgrace who should have no place on our roster. None of them are actually No1 receivers.
There are plenty of No1 receivers who don’t act as divas. Larry Fitzgerald, Marques Colston, AJ Green, Reggie Wayne, Roddy White, Greg Jennings, Mike Wallance and Hakeem Nicks spring to mind
The Jets will continue to do themselves a disservice until we draft a couple of talented WRs rather than think we can make do with has beens and malcontents.
Everyone is preach Braylon
And I loved him while he was with us. But you’re talking about bringing back ‘10-11 Braylon. There’s NO guarantee he exists anymore. I sure as hell wouldn’t of wanted ‘11-12 Braylon.
We need a consistant WR corp and we need to figure out who that’s going to be. I think Holmes can be salvaged and probably will be (like it or not). But Old man Plax isn’t the answer. Kerley deserves his shot, and we need to bring in another deep threat. I’m just not convinced Braylon is guaranteed to repeat past performances.
Close, but not Braylon
There may be more to letting Braylon go than we know – better to trust those in the locker room who already made the decision. Instead,
Free Agents
- Stevie Johnson (WR), because he’s the one guy who really beat Revis, he’s a F.A. and the Bills are cheap.
- Demetrius Bell (OT), because he’s good and the Bills are cheap.
- OLB or DE who can rush the passer (probably not available or not affordable)
Draft
- Courtney Upshaw (Rd. 1 OLB)
- Mark Barron (Rd. 2 SS)
- a Free Safety/Robert Lester (Rd. 3 FS)
- another lucky strike like Kerley (Rd. 4 WR/DT/DE)
- a tight end who can block: George Bryan/Michael WIlliams (Rd. 5 TE)
This might actually be possible with our picks, and with the cap space freed by releasing: Eric Smith, Mike Devito, Wayne Hunter (high cap value, little dead money) or Sanchez.
I Basically Agree
I would definitely like to see Bray brought back. He should have never been let go to begin with. I don’t think he did anything bad behind the scenes. I think he just wanted too much money and they were infatuated with Holmes. Hopefully, Holmes attitude and actions served as a smack to the face and woke Tanny and Rex up. Holmes should go, but with the cap hit the team will take, I don’t know that he will. Bray is fiery, stretches the field, and is a great blocker in the running attack.
Plax should definitely NOT be brought back. He can’t get open and the only usefulness he has is in the Red Zone and possibly on 3rd down. Keller, Cumberland, Baker and Kerley can more than handle those catches.
A tall WR with good speed should be drafted somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd round. It sometimes takes WRs 1-3 years to develop so the Jets need to go ahead and get another young WR to go with Kerley. Toon would be nice from a sentimental perspective and he’s a decent prospect, but there are better prospects that should be available.

bring back bray
but i think we say thank you to plax and wish him well .
i would still draft 2 wr’s this year because there is still a big ? hanging over tone’s future .
if we entered a new season with tone , bray ,kerly and 2 draftee’s it would look good .
if its for you it won't pass you
My main point
is consistency. Yes, we can go after a big name free agent and draft for the future. But until we allow Sanchez to develop a rythmn from year to year with the same WRs, we’ll never know how good he can be. He already has that with Braylon and I just want to give him a chance to start a season without having to learn the skillset and tendencies of another new receiver.
