New York Jets Cut Mardy Gilyard and Elevate Isiah Trufant From Practice Squad

In a bizarre twist, the Jetscut recently signed Mardy Gilyard and replaced him by elevating Isiah Trufant from the practice squad.

The Daily News has learned that the Jets have cut Mardy Gilyard. Gilyard was picked up off waivers from the Rams last Sunday. Gang Green will elevate cornerback Isaiah Trufant from the practice squad to replace Gilyard on the 53-man roster, according to a source.

You might remember the Jets cut Trufant on Sunday to make room for Gilyard. I am not sure what exactly happened between then and now to suddenly make them think Trufant was worthy of a roster spot over Gilyard. Not that it is really too big of a deal since we are talking about back of the depth chart players, but this is odd. One could imagine this could be room for concern about an injury in the secondary, but there are plenty of extra bodies back there.

Gilyard had a bit of an uphill climb for playing time because his game is very similar to that of Jeremy Kerley.
