This ought to put any speculation that we traded Dwight Lowery to clear space for a Meriweather signing to bed.

Some of you are probably very disappointed, others are thrilled. Thoughts?

I posted this on the Simon Says fanpost... but ill repost it here

What are we doing ?

getting rid of lowery for cook basically…..rex says we are loaded at safety…ummm no we arent. We had one of the highest payrolls for last year and now we are being stingy with our money, I really dont get it our front office looks to be rebuilding instead of trying to contend.

Let's Wait a day or two for the dust to settle

I would highly doubt this is the final 53 man roster. I’m sure they are looking at other moves – a lot of teams let go of quality players yesterday. We’re not talking HOF level talent, but guys that could contribute more than some of the marginal guys on the team. We’ll have to wait and see which players clear waivers or which players the Jets put claims on. That process takes 24 hours. The Jets are low down on the claims list, so they may have put in claims on several players but lose out to teams higher on the list. Just like the guard from GB, they are probably looking at guys they had highly rated on their draft boards the last two years, whether as claims or FA’s.

by Traveling Man on Sep 4, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

chill

you really believe the team is rebuilding instead of trying to contend because they traded lowery?

lowery ain’t that great dude. I’m sure they have legit reasons. They Jets are so close to a superbowl I’m sure Woody ain’t saying lets cut lowery because I wanna save 900k. The entire jet organization wants a sb badly.

by KINGESTER on Sep 4, 2011 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

this goes back farther than lowery

losing ellis, woody for two players that arent at their level ( Mo wilk will be good but im not sold on hunter) losing continuity on our recieveing corps is not a good thing, although it could have been worse, and now trading a decent to good safety that new our system and played well considering how hard it is to play, for cook?

I cant say i like many moves we made after santonio and cro….im probably the minority on this and i still have faith but……..im not really optimistic right at the moment.

We're spoiled

It’s been big moves for the past few seasons. A seasons of status quo or just plain regression was bound to happen.

I told people sacrifices were coming. I agree with King, Lowery isn’t that big a sacrifice, but not a single poster on this site has made a rational comprehensive argument to be as to how we have improved this offseason, and I’m not sure they possibly can.

I think they’ve improved in a couple of ways:

-year 3 for sanchez. preseason is difficult to prejudge his regular season performance. Chances are he’s gonna improve this year

-d-line has much added depth now. last year in the playoffs devito, pouha, and ellis basically played every snap. that’s the reason we got pounded by pitt

-leonard and pace and finally healthy

-cro and wilson have an extra year of experience under rex’s system. supposedly year 2 is when players really get into it

by KINGESTER on Sep 4, 2011 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This is exactly what I'm talking about

Saying you have a third year QB does not mean you are going to deliver. Reinforcing the line that you’re losing vets off of with rookies is no indication that you are going to deliver. An additional year of experience for Wilson and Cro is not indication that things will improve. Leonhard and Pace actually being both healthy for a change is not proof that we have improved.

Those are all things that could POTENTIALLY happen. Especially with Cro and Wilson, those are several things I believe will happen, but they’re not givens.

Those are not rational comprehensive arguments for how the team or roster has improved. The things you described are merely what you and I are hoping will happen this season.

it is all based on potential

It could go either way. You’re right when you say we didn’t get “better” players this year compared to last if you just look names. But I feel that the players we do have will be better than they were last year and the added DE depth is better than having ellis. That’s why I think our team overall is better than last years.

This is what's also known as the ugly truth. And very well stated.

i though of that instantly after i posted that

about being spoiled, and i also agree about the second part…..but i think the orginization and everyone here (including me) are putting all of our eggs in the mark sanchez basket and believe he is going to be who we think he can be.

Also we are putting the same expectations on green and if they do take the big leap, the team will take a big leap. But its a wait and see kind of thing.

I did love the addition of Tom Moore as a consultant. I think that might have been our best offseason move outside of re-signing Holmes and drafting Kerley. Not only does it provide Schotty with a mentor of sorts who might knock some sense into him at times, it also means that we have a very capable guy to direct Sanchez if we do boot Schotty midseason or if he leaves in the offseason.

by SioneBAAOOOHA on Sep 4, 2011 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Great point

Hopefully he can get into Shotty’s ear throughout the season when he sees shotty trying to outsmart the other team by outsmarting himself.

I posted this on the Lowery trade yhread

Reports are Meriweather signed with the Bears
I doubt the Jets even called him. They’ve seen him and picked on him twice a year. Whether or not Belicheat has any respect for Rex and Mike’s personnel judgments, I expect they have a lot for his. When the Pats cut someone you very rarely see them go anywhere and do well. Not talking about trades like Seymour, just guys cut loose.

by Traveling Man on Sep 4, 2011 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

by Traveling Man on Sep 4, 2011 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

I'm neutral on this

If the Jets wanted him and got him, I’d have been all for it. I don’t think the Pats cut him because he’s an awful safety—he doesn’t fit their scheme, just like Asante Samuel. So I presume we didn’t try to get him because we feel the same way. After all we’ve got a complicated scheme here, one that Kerry Rhodes couldn’t pick up apparently, so if Meriweather couldn’t play within the Pats’ system I doubt he could pick up ours. I’m intrigued by his physical abilities, but I was never a fan, so whatever.

I’m pretty damn confused though as to why the Bears would want him. ._. They’re a Cover-2 team, one in which I would expect you want your safeties to definitely always be in position, which is definitely not Meriweather’s game.

by Exystence on Sep 4, 2011 12:22 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I agree

It’s one thing to be aggressive, which everyone who plays D for Ryan has to be. It’s another to be undisciplined, which I’ve always considered Meriweather to, even in college.

by Traveling Man on Sep 4, 2011 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

wow!

this sucks.. meriweather couldve been great in our defense, but i just think that he wouldve said no to us even if we had called him..

by J.bleeds_green on Sep 4, 2011 12:22 PM EDT reply actions

Meriweather is VERY overrated

Have any of you guys watched him play recently? The Pats cut him for a reason. We are better off just sticking with the guys that know the system imo.

by Dylan87 on Sep 4, 2011 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

Just a guess...

But I could see them trading Lowery to get a higher conditional pick than the one they sent to the Packers. Next year looks to be a very good and deep draft, unlike this year. It may be as much about the present as starting to build up picks for the future. Organizations that are good for a long time find ways to turn marginal current assets into future value.

Was relieved to see this come up on my twitter feed. Does Brandon Merriweather have talent? Sure he does but he is also inconsistent, gets beat for big plays and seems to think he is much better than he is. Didn’t like Lowery being traded but not bringing in Brandon is a good ‘non-signing’.

I have to imagine that someone will pick him up. Couple of years removed from a first round pick, a decent pre-season with the Jets, a couple of pre-season sacks and 2 poor years in the NFL with a terrible team.

By him being on a terrible team, it should have allowed him to stand out more from those around him, kinda like Kyle Williams.

Maybin was never double teamed, he didn’t have any excuse to not succeed.

by The Licensed Pessimist on Sep 4, 2011 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t nessasarily agree with that assessment. On one hand, yes a good player should stand out amongst poor players, but then I’m not saying Maybin is great or even good, I’m saying he is serviceable now, with potential. We all know that Maybin is an edge rusher, the Bills as a unit were ran on a lot because they couldn’t stop a nose bleed. 160+ yards a game given up on the ground, it made facing the play action bloody tough. Passing downs were no longer obvious passing downs, how many 3rd and medium to longs did you see teams convert on Buffalo last year. I’m not saying he would have come in and recorded 10 sacks. I just think he has an upside in a scheme where he can just get after the QB. Especially a scheme with corners like the Jets who force QB’s to hold onto the ball a little longer than most teams.

I’m sorry but this doesn’t make any sense. Kyle Williams is still considered a beast yet he plays right up the middle of their horrible run defense. And you’re acting as if Maybin was never asked to rush the passer. He was so bad on non rushing downs that they stopped putting him in there and only used him as a pass-rushing specialist, where he constantly got pancaked by RB’s and never recorded a sack. There are no excuses to his poor play

If your OLB’s who are much better than Maybin can barely get to the QB, then there is no way an underweight one trick pony will be able to
