Current New York Jets 53 Man Roster
This is the current state of the roster. It is subject to change at any moment.
QB (3): Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Greg McElroy
RB (5): Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson, Joe McKnight, Bilal Powell, John Conner
WR (5): Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress, Derrick Mason, Jeremy Kerley, Logan Payne
OL (8): D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Slauson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Wayne Hunter, Robert Turner, Vladimir Ducasse, Caleb Schlauderaff
DL (7): Muhammad Wilkerson, Sione Pouha, Mike Devito, Ropati Pitoitua, Kenrick Ellis, Marcus Dixon, Martin Tevaseu
LB (9): Bryan Thomas, Bart Scott, David Harris, Calvin Pace, Jamaal Westerman, Aaron Maybin, Josh Mauga, Garrett McIntyre, Nick Bellore
DB (10): Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson, Marquice Cole, Donald Strickland, Eric Smith, Jim Leonhard, Brodney Pool, Emanuel Cook, Isiah Trufant
ST (3): Nick Folk, T.J. Conley, Tanner Purdum
Thoughts: What jumps off the page to me is Jarron Gilbert getting cut. I had not seen news of that anywhere. It seemed like the athletic freak was starting to put things together. His play on the line was good in preseason, and he even blocked a field goal. It seems Rex's love of defensive backs won out. I am also not sure why Isiah Trufant made it, even if he has a brother who was once good with the Seahawks. The team did not even bring him back to camp. Why not if he was that good? Was it worth keeping him over Dwight Lowery?

Not to shockin
Gilbert seemed like the odd man out, and I belive Trufant was signed on the 2nd. Why sign someone to cut them 2 days later. And I didnt even notice Lowry this preseason.Tho I heard Rex was high on rookie Posey so I thought he would stay.
Yea I thought the Trufant signing was odd...
but I’ve seen them do it before, cut and release a player the next day, things keep changing. I wouldn’t be surprised if they cut him if they bring in Merriweather.

they picked up Trufant around the Eagles game.

Id expect Cook
Cook isnt any good in coverage either atleast Merriweather is a play maker as a tackller/blitzer
I really like Gilbert's upside, but I just don't see the snaps for him right now.
I think we’re going to see essentially 2 waves of our DLs: the run wave and the pas wave.
I see the run wave as being primarily Pouha, Devito and Pitoitua and they’ll be spelled by MTV.
I see the pass wave as being the younger, more athletic crew of Wilkerson, Kenrick and Dixon. The youngins don’t have to be as technically sound if they play mostly on passing downs. They can shoot gaps and take chances and use their athleticism, rather than relying on sound technique and discipline and being in control of the guy in front of them. And with the way Dixon has been playing (seemingly like a player on the verge of becoming big-time) you really don’t want to give away his snaps to Gilbert.
Yea I was saying it the whole time...
it was going to be tough to keep 8 DLs, nearly impossible when your carrying three injured players.

Maybe we're gonna all be surprised and find out we are going to a 4-3?

Trufant, why, juts why...
Lankster, Posey, anyone I would have perferd, Trufant is awful, hopefully he’s just saving a spot till we sign someone else.

I also would have preferred Lankster..
If they kept Lankster instead of Trufant would Trufant be PS eligible
?
Lankster>Trufant
Does Trufant have any unique skill ? Coverage of small quick receivers ? Gunner Special Teams (loss of Logan Payne) ? very curious
Coverage Safeties Versus In the Box Safeties
Lowery represented to me , a Coverage Safety that was adequate against the run, but gave you excellent pass coverage and a ball hawking capability in the secondary. Now the Jets have 4 In the Box Safeties, great against the run, but with Pass coverage deficiencies. Do Not understand.
Playing Safety is a matter of position and playing angles, but every OC can see that you can beat these Safeties deep. Every team that the Jets face, will work their game plan around a passing attack that features exploiting the Jets Safeties
Keller, Mulligan, Cumberland
were the 3 TEs to make the team
they gave and got some picks for cuts
saw this on roto news…
Jaguars acquired CB Dwight Lowery from the Jets for an undisclosed conditional draft pick.
Lowery has appeared in at least 13 games for the Jets each of the past three seasons, and can play either cornerback or safety. A ball-hawker, he could make an impact as a reserve.
and
Jets acquired OG Caleb Schlauderaff from the Packers for an undisclosed draft pick.
A sixth-round pick, Schlauderaff isn’t likely to see many snaps as a rookie this season, but is considered a pure guard prospect, and has excellent size at 6-foot-4, 305 pounds.
already been posted but thanks for it though.
the pick from Lowery probably went for Caleb unless Lowery went for something higher than Caleb.

my bad
i did not see it posted already.
i don’t know if this was posted also but i saw that the Redskins released QB Kellen Clemens. maybe he ends up on the jets again with mcelroy’s injury?
no worries man it happens =)
there was a possibility of that or Kevin O’Connor someone who knows the system.

Id be shocked
If Lowery’s Value was = to a 6th round pick who hadent played well this preseason
because he's worth more or less?

Trufant ?
Can’t wait until we sign Meriweather…

I'm surprised to see Lowery moved
But I guess it makes sense considering we got something for him. Maybe he was expendable because we’re planning on bringing in Meriweather and the team feels that other guys are better backups at CB…?
I’m a bit disappointed because I wanted to see what he could do at safety with more experience at the position, but overall it was probably a good move. Depending on what we got for him, of course.

Logan Payne and Isaiah Trufant are likely placeholders. We’ll try and come to terms with some players we like who got cut from other teams, and if that fails Payne/Trufant are the fallback options.
As for Gilbert, he had a pretty weak preseason, and rarely saw action against 2’s, let alone 1’s. We have 7 legit DL players this year, as opposed to 5 1/2 last season (Ellis, DeVito, Pouha, Pryce, Dixon, Gholston). There’s no room for him, and he’s severely outclassed as a player by the likes of Pitoitua, Dixon, and Tevaseu. No surprise whatsoever Gilbert didn’t make it. He’s just not very good.
Daniel Te'o-Nesheim
He got cut from the Eagles. I know we’re currently up to the gills in LBs apparently but I can’t help but feel like he could very well be the answer to our pass rushing woes. He seems the type that would be perfect to stand up—he’s got the ideal size at 6’3", over 260 lbs and he’s a natural pass rusher. He was a 3rd rounder last year and got beat out by a CFL standout for a job, so it’s not like he got cut for sucking or anything like that. The Eagles are actually pretty stacked at DE now… But anyway, I dunno who we need to cut to get him on the team but I want us to make it happen!

Perrish Cox, got cut by the Broncos.
He’s a bit of a toxic substance due to his pending sexual assault trial. But the kid is a talent. Might be worth a peek just to see how good he is and if he can fit.
Lito Sheppard, was cut too.

Igor Olshansky
Any chance we bring him in to boost our DL depth? He’s very very solid against the run and definately would help along the line.
what exactly makes Gilbert so uber-talented? the fact that he’s best known for jumping out of a pool? i like the athleticism from a d lineman but there has to be a reason why the guy has played 5 NFL games. sorry i prefer a large, 3-4 established and still relatively young lineman who excels against the run.
I think Olshansky's a player
But he’s not a pass rusher, which is what the Jets could use

The Jets should pick up Kellen Clemens. He knows the system.

Although QB Kellen Clemens was waived by Redskins, I’ve been told it’s unlikely at this point that there will be a reunion with #Jets.

Edwards would be a much better option

Edwards would be a solid option. I think the combination of Dick Jauron and the Adrian Wilson hit sent him on a crash and burn course as a prospect. Before that, he showed good potential and wasn’t as skittish. And his measurables are solid, even though he checks down a lot it’s not for lack of arm strength. Maybe he’d finally turn it around with a better ball club (Bills [before this GM], Raiders, and Jags aren’t/weren’t exactly the cream of the crop).

Severay WRs that were cut are better than Logan Payne
Donnie Avery, Brandon Tate, and Seyji Ajirotutu can all play. I was surprised all of these guys are out there.
Tate has done nothing with the Pats besides be a good return man and he was outdone by Eldeman.

I suppose Trufant is making way for someone, unless he's an epic special teamer
Doesn’t look like they’re bringing in another QB, which if Brunell is healthy is fine by me. McElroy can be inactive for a couple of weeks, if the worst happens and both QB’s go down I think someone mentioned Kerley as temporary 3rd QB. Interesting idea.
Payne and Rob Turner are the big question marks for me, both could get IR’ed if there’s anything on the market. Otherwise (aside from Trufant) i guess the other 50 are safe. Maybe not Conley.
if I recall correctly
Trufant was the guy blocking for Cole on his Pick Six in the Bills game

Wheeee
Is everyone’s head spinning yet from all the moves? LOL!!! Looks like Maybin’s stay on the roster, McElroy’s stay off of IR, and Kerley’s serving as the 3rd QB were all short lived!!!!

Hmmm.
Caulcrick could be nice as a backup FB and a capable blocker/runner since we skipped out on Toal. I would LOVE Wallace Wright back. He probably still remembers the system and he was always so good as a gunner. Him and Marquice Cole could be awesome on ST together. It really sucks that Clowney got cut, he’s such a great guy. Other than that, no thanks, becuase Bender never even lasted a year.
