Jenny Vrentas says we should expect Garrett McIntyre to survive the final cuts.
Today, he got encouraging news: While at least 17 of his teammates were informed of their release, the Jets told McIntyre they plan to keep him on the 53-man roster, per a person with direct knowledge of what the team told the player. That person requested anonymity because the team will not announce its cuts until tonight.
For all the talk of either Jamaal Westerman or Aaron Maybin being the designated pass rusher, McIntyre looked a lot better than either of them in preseason getting after the quarterback. He definitely displayed a nose for the football. Now his competition was mainly guys at the back of opposing depth charts as well as camp fodder. There is no telling whether it will translate to real games. He has earned at least the right to be part of the discussion. If he can contribute on special teams and find the ball, he will be worth having around no matter what.
