Baltimore Ravens Fan Here
Hello New York Jets fans. I'm sure you all know the next game for the Jets will be against The Ravens and my purpose for this fanpost is to answer as many questions as possible about the ravens before the game starts on sunday. I have questions of my own about your team and you should see them listed below:
How has former Raven Derrick Mason & former giant Plaxico Burress come along so far?
Has Mark Sanchez become a better quarterback than he was last year?
What rookie has step up for the team?
Has Kyle Wilson become better than last year?
Since Jason Taylor departure who has step up in the pass rush department?

A few answers...
4. Kyle Wilson is definitely not at island level yet, but he’s got a much better head for the game. Training with Revis made a huge impact on his play, mostly the mental aspect. He plays smarter, and most importantly, way better than last year.
5. First of all, Jason Taylor was not our game-chaning pass rusher. There was no void left that people had to step up, because we had a sucky pass-rush last year. Our first round draft pick, Muhammad Wilkerson, is playing better than I thought he would. Calvin Pace is still awesome, but like last year, we’re relying mostly on blitzes and awesome secondary coverage to allow us time to get to the QB. I’m going out on a limb here and saying Flacco should be pretty safe next game…
Hope that answer your last two questions! I have one question: in Week 1, did the Steelers play exceptionally awful or did the Ravens play exceptionally well? Or was it a combination of both? I missed the game, but that lopsided score really freaked me out…
I would say the steelers played awful I beleive they had more than 4 turnovers in that game
and the Ravens just was the better team.

A few more...
1) Mason and Plax are coming along but as expected not there just yet IMO.
2) Sanchez comp % is up so far but he is still prone to the occasional mistake.
3) PR Kerley ripped off a 53 yard return last week. DE Mo Wilkerson had a Safety/Sack two weeks ago.

1. Mason has been OK, I guess nothing more than I expected. He missed an easy touchdown a few weeks back, but other than that he’s been sure handed. He’s not expected to be a star, and I think every Jets fan will be happy if he catches 40-50 balls this year with around 500 yards and 3-5 TD. Plax has been very good. Even when he’s not catching balls, he’s freeing up the field because the other team has to double team him. His stats don’t jump off the page, but I personally have been very impressed.
2. I think Sanchez has improved. He is making a lot more plays, and his 4 picks are a direct result of increased responsibilities. His other statistics are very solid. I think he’s a top 12 QB this year.
3. Mo Wilkerson is pretty much the only rookie in our starting lineup. He had a huge sack for a safety in week 2, and he’s been playing well. Watch for Jeremy Kerley on the punt returns, he is extremely elusive and very quick. Oh and, if you’re unlucky, the Jets are going to unleash the beast:
4. Kyle Wilson has gotten a lot better from last year. He had a horrible game against Baltimore last year, but with experience and after an offseason of training with Revis, he looks much better. Probably could start for many teams, and I don’t think that its a stretch to call him the one of the best nickel backs in the league.
5. I never liked Jason Taylor, he had 5 sacks for the Jets last year but I don’t think it was that difficult to replace him. I guess Calvin Pace and Bart Scott are the main pass rushers. Mo Wilkerson and Bryan Thomas can also get through to the QB.

Let me go through this
Derick mason seemed (before this last game) to be more of a decoy than anything. Its funny because the slot reciever seemed to be Mark’s favorite target when Cotch was here. Burress is doing more than people may give him credit for, he is drawing double teams which is opening up the middle and allowing mason and keller to make plays.
Mark sanchez is definitely a better QB than last year with a 90 QB rating, however if you go by that new QBR garbage he is horrible.
Kyle Wilson spending time with revis has shown. He was phenominal in the dallas game and has been good the last 2 weeks
.
The rookie i like the most is mo wilkerson. He has been everything as advertised when he was daft and he looks like he is well on his way to getting to that Shaun Ellis status. ALso jeremy Kerley has been as good a punt returner as there is, not named hester or cribbs.
With jason taylor being gone im going to say calvin pace has been the best with mo wilk throwing his pressure rushes in also. Pace coming of the foot injury has impressed so far but i still think we should have gotten rid of Bryan thomas in the offseason and brought in Matt Roth. He is a great run stopper and he could have helped this last game.
Expect a Pissed off jets team in baltimore sunday night.

cool I saw the Cromartie is going through some pain from his lung and its possible that he may not play sunday. If so Wilson will most likely get the chance to start next to revis and i get a chance to see how good he has become so far

I'll start the questions
Is it just my impression, or have both your overall team’s performance and Flacco in particular been wildly inconsistent?
Boldin is undoubtedly your #1 WR, is there a clear #2?
Ray Rice is still able to make plays but he is a veteran. What’’s the Ravens’ plan for when he slows down eventually, and what alternative RB’s seem best to you?
On your defense, the players most talked about are also veterans: Ngata, Reed, Lewis, Suggs. I’d like to ask about what other players seem to be important to your team going forward.
Do you play more man-to-man or zone coverage with your cornerbacks?
What went wrong in the Titans game?

Flacco has been inconsistent but
a lot of that is on the receivers inability to get open. Ray Rice slowing down? He’s just in his 4th year like Flacco. Torrey Smith sure tried to claim the #2 WR slot with his first three TD receptions last week. On defense, Terrence “Mount” Cody plugs the middle, and we have a bey of guys who can rush the psser, and vet Cory Redding had a monster game disrupting the offense last week. We lost Todd Hep but in his place have a faster TE who is a match-up nightmare. In our secondary we are more of a zone coverage with man responsibilities on blitzing. At Tennessee I’d like to say we overlooked them, but admit they outplayed us in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Tell us about your TE.
Is he more a blocker or receiver? Is he a step up or step down from Heap?
Tell us about your TE.

As of right now the ravens have two really good tight ends in Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta. Ed Dickson is the stater and he may not be as good of blocker as Heap but he has improved from last year. Dennis Pitta has been described as the next todd heap by coaches and the way he plays is similar of heap style. Overall I would say they are more of a receiving type tight ends like the patriots tight end but their blocking don’t suck also the ravens do have a veteran by the name of Kris Wilson who is a much better blocker than Pitta and Dickson

Is it just my impression, or have both your overall team’s performance and Flacco in particular been wildly inconsistent?
I would say the Ravens has had their share of inconsistency in the past and so far the only game this year where the team/Falcco was inconsistent was against the titans.
Boldin is undoubtedly your #1 WR, is there a clear #2?
Lee Evans is undoubtfully our #2 wideout but he has had issues with his ankle so he hasn’t been healthy enough to play effectively. In the steelers game he was one the reasons why the ravens offense had so much success against the steelers defense because he was a decoy giving Boldin, Ray Rice, Ed Dickson, Dennis Pitta more room to work the middle of the field and etc.
Ray Rice is still able to make plays but he is a veteran. What’’s the Ravens’ plan for when he slows down eventually, and what alternative RB’s seem best to you?
Well Ray Rice is only 24 years old and as of right now he has alot left in the tank but it is true that one day he will slow down but the ravens organization have a nice track record of drafting/signing good runningbacks so I’m not worried if Ray Rice slows down in future because there will probably be a better runningback in the mix by then.
As of right now I like the ravens back Ricky Williams and he may be 34 years old but still has a good burst also a very good power runningback. Williams is also very good at pass catching and pass blocking which has served the ravens offense well. The Ravens have seventh round rookie runningback by the name of Anthony Allen and he has shown promise maybe even a steal for the Ravens but Williams has been the best backup running back so far.
On your defense, the players most talked about are also veterans: Ngata, Reed, Lewis, Suggs. I’d like to ask about what other players seem to be important to your team going forward
As the ravens go forward the upcoming important player would be first round pick Jimmy Smith and second round pick sergio kindle. The ravens are still in need of big shutdown cornerback and Jimmy Smith fits everything they need going on into the future. The ravens pass rush has been good so far but we all believe Sergio Kindle could turn it up a notch once he returns.
Do you play more man-to-man or zone coverage with your cornerbacks?
This year the ravens have been mixing up with Man to Man and Zone Coverage but I think once Jimmy Smith proves he ready to be a starter with a improved Cary Williams the defense coach may switch to more of man coverage .
What went wrong in the Titans game?
I would say injuries because the ravens didnt have key players like Lee Evans, Chris Carr, and Dominque Foxworth a 100 percent healthly. I believe also the coaches and players just wasn’t on their A game because the steelers win probably got them a little too confident but I think that lost bought them back to earth.

Well Chris Carr played in the last game he said since the titans game he has felt better. The ravens are not sure about Lee Evans and Dominque Foxworth but its a good chance that they could come in and play effectively. the only player we know so far who wont be playing is Jimmy Smith and Ruki

The Ravens didn’t didnt have a healthy secondary which really hurt them and the titans took advantage of that. The titans just kept beating the ravens with quick passes and Matt Hasselbeck may not be a elite quarterback but he can still hurt you with his fast passes. The Titans defense basicly shutdown the ravens offense but speedy wideout lee evans wasnt healthy to help open the field for Boldin and the other wideouts.
The ravens do have another speedy wideout in rookie torrey smith but him and Flacco wasnt clicking doing the time but if you watched the rams game you tell they are now lol

Terrence Cody has been doing very good and I would say he has definately open up lanes for other players like Ngata, Suggs, Cory Reddings and etc to get to the quarterback. Cody is very good at stopping the run but as of right now his pass rush skills are still in development but ravens dont need him to be dominate in that area.

With the Titans
I believe it was a bit of a perfect storm scenario. It was their home opener and the Titans are a completely different team on the road. They were pumped up and aggressive on both sides of the ball. Matt Hasselbeck fed off of the teams enthusiasm and the rest of the pieces fell in to place. This, combined with the Ravens being overly confident and exhausting a lot of emotion and energy in the Pitt. game lead to a long day for Flacco and Co. These things happen in the NFL. The Titans have some very good players, their problem will be consistency. It is hard to reproduce that level of play every week with a new team.
By the end of the season it all balances out and the cream rises to the top. The Ravens will be in the playoffs due to the talent laden roster and and week to week consistency.. I hope any way. However Hasselbeck is a Pro-bowl qb and shook some rust off that Sunday. For that day the Titans were better. I doubt the conclusion would be the the same a second time around… Or, even if the Ravens played them in Baltimore. That and Kenny Britt being out, That guy killed us.

How do you think the ravens will do if the jets are stopping ray rice?
Well Rice is a major part of the offense and helps flacco out alot but if the jets do stop Ray Rice than i guess the passing game will have to be on point and the ravens do have good weapons to do so.
I think the idea of defense focusing only to take away Ray Rice from the game will be a mistake because the ravens do have more speed on the offense with Lee Evans & Torrey Smith also Boldin, Ed Dickson, Dennis Pitta aren’t no joke either lol

The Ravens are more balanced on offense than ever before.
One more year of chemistry with Boldin plus all the new speed and young play-makers on the offense have done wonders for Flacco’s development. It all depends (as it usually does) on the offensive line. If the Jets contain Rice and the line falters the Ravens will struggle. If the line holds up Baltimore can win games through the air, even against dominant corners like the Jets have. The two young tight ends and new speed in the passing game create nightmares for defenders.
Luckily for Rice, Flacco and Cam Cameron they also have a defense capable of winning games as long as the secondary can make a few plays. The jets are a very similar team and will be a tough opponent but it all comes down to Qb play and I believe Baltimore has an advantage there. Flacco is just starting to scratch the surface of his potential. Also Baltimore has many more play makers on defense. That being said I would not be surprised if the Jets won. The Titans came out firing on all cylinders and beat us. Any Given Sunday the same thing can happen!

If you think Flacco has the edge over Sanchez, you're crazy.
Sanchez is a better playmaker and he’s MUCH more clutch. Flacco is flaccid in the big spot.
I'm sorry but this is simply not true
Sanchez struggles against elite defenses. Flacco does not. Not only are Flaccos over all stats better but he has had an Inferior receiving corps over the past few years. There is really no debating this topic at present. Blind homerism aside and it is clear.

Only Homerism is on you
Too say Flacco doesnt choke is not living in reality. Sanchez is more of a playmaker in the clutch he did put up 19 straight against PIT in the playoffs and I dont know where you came up with he struggles against elite defences because that is untrue.
Even tho Flacco has the bigger arm I woulndt take him over Sanchez. Sanchez plays when it matters. 8 4th quarter comebacks and 7 game winning drives. Look side by side playoff stats.

While Sanchez has done well in the playoffs, Flacco has been head and shoulders above him in the regular season.
Someone asked me if Ravens fans could say Flacco has been the reason for our playoff success. I ask you Jets fans if Sanchez has been the reason you guys have even gotten to the playoffs. I sure as hell don’t think so.

So just cause Sanchez hasent carried our team he's worst then Flacco?
Has Sanchez ever carried us into the playoffs no becuase he was a first and second year QB. Doesnt change the fact Sanchez is a much better player then Flacco with a game on the line. Hate him and the Jets all you guys want but you cant say Flacco is a better playmaker in the clutch
Im not going to lie that is very much true and I believe both quarterbacks are very good. I think Flacco has improved from last year and maybe alot better than jets fans think but we will see.

Welcome, Jazz
Always loved the style and attitude of your team and organization. And I think your new head coach is a keeper.
My question is, what do you and Baltimore fans in general think about Rex since he left? I think it would be very fair to say that Jets fans in general are very thankful and feel lucky to have him, as he has given a new identity to the franchise. I was just curious to see what you guys thought of him since he’s been gone.
Good luck, enjoy the game, and thanks for coming over.
Proud to root for the Jets, Mets, and Islanders!!!

what do you and Baltimore fans in general think about Rex since he left?
Well just about all the ravens fans including my self hated to see Rex Ryan go but this is not the first time ravens fans have experience a very good defensive coordintor leave for a better postion but I think the ravens players probably hated to see him leave more than the ravens because he had a bond with just about all the players.
I wont say we over the fact rex ryan is gone but we have a new defensive coordinator by the name of Chuck Pagano who beleives in the same methods of rex ryan on defense and the defensive players seems to really like him and I think he has a bond with some of them
I think Chuck Pagano will ease the pain of Ryan departure because last year we probably was really missing him because our defense wasnt aggressive at all like we were all being used to seeing but still was able to be one of the top ten defenses in the nfl
Im sure the game sunday will be a hard fought battle

"The message to the rest of the league is, hey, the Jets are coming, and we're going to give you everything we got. And I think that's going to be more than you can handle"
what happen to Mattison?
After the playoffs loss to the steelers Mattison felt like the best situation for him was to go be a defensive coordinator for a college team that was closest to his family. I forgot what team it was but I know for sure it gave a chance to be closest to his family and give a chance to do what he loves to do which is be a defensive coodinator. Chuck Pagano was orginally the ravens secondary coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator after Mattison departure

With that kind of turnover at the DC position it’s hard not to attribute Baltimore’s success to their personnel. I mean that’s a lot of changes in attitude, philosophy, style and presumably playcalling. The fact the Ravens defense has remained among the league’s best is pretty remarkable.

You right but I think Ray Lewis & Ed Reed plays a big factor in keeping this defense together.
Ray and Ed are like Defensive coodinators theirselves and we have alot of smart players on defense to the point it keeps the defense solid but its is remarkable that it has been able to stay one of league best after so much change in defense coordinators

I’ve thought the same thing for years. It’s crazy that a team like Pittsburgh has had the same Defensive coordinator for so long.

your team has had so many great coaches go to other teams
i don’t think any other team has had as many coaches become head coaches with other teams. would you have taken any of these guys over harbaugh?

I think before ravens fans/players knew about Harbaugh they would had wanted Rex Ryan instead of him but Harbaugh has done such a great job and its only getting better as a head coach that I honestly would only want Harbaugh to be a headcoach.
He has his moments where I disagree with his methods but he is really a good coach and i think he is alot better than last year

I love Harbaugh..
He is a strong, stand up guy with great moral judgement and a fantastic work ethic. Any team that can adapt to his style will be successful. He delegates responsibility well and put players and coaches in the right positions. Harbaugh makes mistakes but he’s young and always learns from them. I think that is about all you can ask for in a coach. With all the great drafts and signings Ozzie has made, I think Harbaugh may prove to be the biggest!

A question about Masons character and how it affects the team.
Mason has been quietly improving as the weeks go by. This week saw him get a number of catches (6 or 8 I think in total). But up until then he almost looked impatient on the field waiting for the passes to come his way. Some might even say he was getting angry.
Perhaps as an interesting side note, the Jets #1 Santonio Holmes seemed to be taken out of the gameplan completely as Mason was being worked in. Of course this is subjectional but…
I know he was a little disgruntled with the Ravens. Did you find that when he seemed most angry with the Ravens playcalling the team seemed to force feed him to the detriment to the rest of the WR core?
Basically put- will Mason continue to complain about getting touches until the team passes on better options just to shut him up?

Last year just about all of our wideouts were mad. Boldin, Mason, and Housmanzadeh all had their times of getting up set and its understandable because these guys were all used to being that play maker seeing the ball more than they were seeing last year with the ravens.
When Mason would get upset because he didnt see the ball as many times as he would had like doing a game I guess the coaches and Flacco would try to make it up to him in the next game but overall Mason is a competitor and he wants the ball in his hands and thats a good trait to have plus its even better when you can makes in tough moments.

I'm actually thinking Mason is overkill insurance
And I don’t think he should get more than 25 balls. He may get quite mad this season. We have LDT, Keller, had Cumberalnd, now Josh Baker, etc, etc, who should get the shot at the slot before Mason. Sorry, recognize his talent, but would rather another direction.

Mason looks old and slow

Exactly why we got rid of him, and he was old and slow for us on the outside. Did not work well.
"'If there isn't a bone sticking out of my leg, I'm playing" - Marshall Yanda
Did not work well because we had possession receivers all on the same field at the same time
it doesnt take much for a defense to know none of the wideouts we had werent going to beat them deep and If Mason was old and slow on the outside then Boldin was to because he wasnt open as much either and they both had 800 and something receiving yards.

Wouldn't he look old because he's slow?
I would say he looked slow and out of sych with Sanchez. The latter can be corrected, the former can’t.

I honest have not watched any of the jets game to know if Mason looking old and slow
if thats the case he still better than any other wideout you got besides Holmes and Burgess besides if he can still get you first downs and touchdowns it doesnt really matter how fast he is

Mason wants to win, he will tell you all about it!
The only thing he wants more that that is to be the one who wins the game. His combative attitude caused him to fall out of favor with the coaching staff in Baltimore. The Ravens are going in the youth direction while trying to stay relevant with key veterans. No small task in the salary capped NFL… Masons age, combined with his diva tendencies made him expendable when cuts were made.
Mason lost it last year in a game and grabbed Flacco by the face mask after receiving no looks in the first half. Most of the throws were going to a newly acquired Anquan Boldin. Mason didn’t like it because their timing was still being worked out and the Ravens were struggling because of it. I think this moment changed the way Harbaugh and Flacco viewed Derrick and sealed his fate as a Raven. Any player that views himself higher than the team on game day can hurt the rest of the teams progress. To answer your question, I think Mason will make it known that he wants the ball. Especially if the offense is struggling. His intentions may seem sincere but making waves at inopportune times does more damage than good.
You should be okay because he is down farther on the depth chart on the Jets. His griping can only go so far when the team has better options already. The Ravens did not at the time.

Are Reed and Lewis showing signs of old age?
I know they both can still play, but has there been any noticable sign of either slowing down? Isn’t Reed a free agent this offseason? Do you think he’ll be resigned?
Oh yes that's right, I'm a Jets fan.
