New York Jets 53 Man Roster Projection

He doesn't have to worry about making the team.

The following represents my current best guess about how the final 53 man roster will shake out for the Jets. This will undoubtedly change as injury news comes out about certain players on this list, and other teams cut guys who might garner interest from Gang Green. Keep in mind, this only represents my predictions, not necessarily what I think should happen.

QB (3)-Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Greg McElroy

RB (5)-Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson, Joe McKnight, Bilal Powell, John Conner

WR(5)-Santonio Holmes, Plaxico Burress, Derrick Mason, Jeremy Kerley, Dan DePalma TE (3)-Dustin Keller, Matthew Mulligan, Jeff Cumberland

OL (8)-D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Slauson, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore, Wayne Hunter, Vladimir Ducasse, Robert Turner, Matt Kroul

DL (8)-Mike Devito, Sione Pouha, Ropati Pitoitua, Muhammad Wilkerson, Marcus Dixon, Martin Tevaseu, Kenrick Ellis, Jarron Gilbert

LB (9)-Bryan Thomas, Bart Scott, David Harris, Calvin Pace, Josh Mauga, Jamaal Westerman, Aaron Maybin, Garrett McIntyre, Nick Bellore

DB (9)-Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson, Marquice Cole, Donald Strickland, Eric Smith, Jim Leonhard, Dwight Lowery, Brodney Pool

ST (3)-Nick Folk, T.J. Conley, Tanner Purdum

I like it for the most part...

the only things I see in question:

1- will McElroy be on IR, if so will we take Willy or sign someone else

2- No back up C with Turner out for half the season, I think Felix (or someone else that plays C) makes
it over Kroul

3- The more I look at it I think the final spot on D will be between Maybin, McIntyre, Gilbert, and Cook, with one man left out, and that person not necessarily being the worst player.

I agree

The other thing I would change from the initial one is that I don’t think the LB/CB mix is going to be 8-8. I think Rex is going to want 10 DBs which would unfortunately mean cutting one more of the LBs.

by OldJetsFanatic on Sep 2, 2011 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

You could be right about Felix

My guess is Ducasse would play LG and Slauson would slide to C, though.

Good plan, Don't think Felix is an NFL guy,

I think I would trust Kroul at LG before Ducasse. Not bad for a guy who is working at OL less than a month. When we drafted Ducasse, we new that coming from a small school that the jets would have to be patiant, well I’m starting to run out of patiance with Vlad. Ducasse seems to confuse easily, there is a need to simplify. Ducasse should be the swing tackle, LT and RT, thats it , limit his assignments

by JetOrange on Sep 2, 2011 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

It doesn't have to be Felix, just most likely on the team...

I think its more likely we sign someone else. I think Kroul would go to the PS (if he’s still eligible).

Westerman really disappointed me yesterday

Don’t understand why he kept trying to bull rush when it was not working, He did not protect the edge letting a few runs outside, one when he spin inside taking himself out of the play because the runner went outside. As a speed rusher, your first move should be speed. Its hard to bull rush an O-lineman especially when you run right into him. You’re doing his job for him. If you’re gonna bull rush get the lineman off balance first.

Sorry, had to vent. See no problem with this list, however, Dan DePalma has not impress me at all. I rather let him go and pickup another o-lineman.

maybin looked good. we should take the chance

if he can do that with little knowledge of the D think what he can do with coaching. might just be the right team, environment, and right scheme for him.

by george JETson on Sep 2, 2011 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

Having seen Maybin with the Bills, I just can’t believe he’ll actually amount to anything. I don’t know if I can put into words how lame he looked. But, being a Bills fan, I also can’t discount that the organization is still incompetent (I hope we’ve turned the corner on the whole incompetent things, but….). I don’t wish him ill will or anything….well, playing for a division rival might make me change my mind on that one….but he was just SO bad. When he got cut, I was disappointed b/c I still held out help, but look at the Bills LB core now and can’t honestly say he had earned a spot over any of the OLBs he would be taking the spot of. Maybe being waived lit a fire under him.

Worried about O

The running game is a bit of a concern. What looked like a solid depth on paper, did not look like it during this preseason. Except for Greene, I do not have any confidence in this group. Also why do the Jets constantly want J. Mcknight to run in between tackle. Yeah sometime he could do that but we have to play to Joes strength and design plays that make him run in space. Either catching screens, dumpoffs or he should bounce on the outside. On the whole I am very worried about our offense. Somebody, please tell me I’m wrong.

I think we do have solid depth if our OC would call plays to the backs strengths…lets hope it was just a preseason thing and during the year our OC will call plays to the players strengths…(Not gonna happen unless Moore talked some sense into Schotty)

Kellen is prob staying in Washington with their ridiculous circus of a QB situation.

by Timmaht on Sep 2, 2011 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

At the end of preseason the Skin QB situation looks solid

If not Kellen , Welcome back Brett Ratliff, or how about Kevin O Connell

by JetOrange on Sep 2, 2011 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

It's really moot though.

Anyone of those three is going to have the same success if Sanchez goes down, almost none. McElroy was a ray of sunshine this preseason on a position that has been a question mark for a decade now, backup QB.

Obviously, they’ll want to bring back someone who knows the system, but I’m just saying I think Kellen will be in Washington’s roster as in they aren’t cutting him. Beck and Grossman could very well get injured or in Shannahan’s doghouse in the first two weeks of the season.

Great Job!

I’m in almost total agreement. I think it’s possible that Rex will keep 10 DBs, however, as we know how much he loves them. He has kept more than the expected number at some positions however, as he has said more than once that he will keep the best 53 football players regardless of position. I’m not sure if that has ever outweighed his love for DBs, however, and made him keep less than 10.

I think DePalma deserves a spot on the roster with Payne probably going on IR. I don’t think there’s any way he would make it to the PS, or even if he did, wouldn’t last there very long. Some other team would surely sign him. Maybe the Giants.

I think the same thing goes for Jarron Gilbert and the young LBers (Maybin, Bellore and McIntyre).

Let’s hope that Rex is thinking like you.

The only thing I would chance is the OL. While Kroul has shown some promise, I’m not sure I’d keep him. I think the Jets need someone that can go in immediately if need be. I think they need to sign a veteran OL who can play both OT & OG .

Oops!

I missed that Felix isn’t on your list. He has to be there, or the Jets have to sign a vet OL who can play C and OG. I’d also IR Turner. He’s gonna miss half the season, and no one knows how effective or what kind of shape he’ll be in when he comes back. He isn’t that good to begin with.

Are you kidding ?

Weatherford has choked in 2 straight post seasons… You really wanna play that game again?

Conley has been good, I don’t see the problem. As for Clemens, he knows the playbook, so he would probably get the call.

by The_Jets_Way on Sep 2, 2011 2:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree, but a punter has two or three bad punts during the season

has potential to screw up a whole season. at least we know weatherford has it in him to be great. we have yet to see conley in a pressure situation, for all we know it could be worse. as for Clemens, I agree he should get the call since he knows the playbook, but I would feel more comfortable with Rosenfels coming into a game over him

by JETSKID123 on Sep 2, 2011 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I seriously can't see them bringing in Clemens

Or at the very least I can’t see Clemens accepting to come in to essentially be like our 5th string QB. If Brunell’s ready to go, that’s who they’re going to lean on (and they were going to anyway from the looks of things). I don’t particularly like that, but I don’t dislike it more than bringing Clemens back tbh.

Should theJets be looking at Gurode?

He would be a true backup center – don’t know if he can swing over to one of the guards? Unless there is a real physical problem with him, he could be a steal on a one year veteran’s minimum.

by Traveling Man on Sep 2, 2011 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Because..

I think Turner goes on the IR – no point holding a spot for 10 weeks when O-line is an issue anyway.

by Traveling Man on Sep 2, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Possible, but I've heard some not-so-good things

Like that he’s got health issues (I think he had surgery in the offseason). Plus I don’t think he’s a good fit for our zone-blocking system since he’s like a big old school slow man-blocking dude. That said if it was for the veteran minimum I’d take a swing—he could back up at RT, sorta become the next Damien Woody possibly…?

by Exystence on Sep 2, 2011 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking at the Offensive Line last night , they need to do something

Gurode just too expensive…. The guy I’m looking at that is rumored “to be cut” is Mike McGlynn OC/OG play a little Tackle from the Eagles, he is a fourth year guy (4th round pick). Looking for trader Mike to send Philly a 2012 6th round pick for the expieranced Center/Guard. Looking to get back that sixth by sending Donald Strickland packing to a CB starved team ( replaced by Lankster)
