OLB Tully Banta-Cain Touring Jets Facility
Please welcome the newest member of the GGN writing staff, bobdolethesnapplelady. He has been doing some great work over the past few weeks as a moderator. He will be helping out in breaking down big news that breaks during the day.-JB
Per Manish Mehta via Twitter, former Patriots OLB/DE Tully Banta-Cain is fully healed from his abdomen injury, and is currently touring Florham Park and meeting with coaches. Banta-Cain is a free agent after being released by the Patriots. He is 31 years old, and won two Superbowls with the Patriots. He was drafted in 2003 in the seventh round.
As OLB is a weak spot of ours, and as Banta-Cain had a career-high 10 sacks in 2009, perhaps Rex is looking at bolstering our clearly weak pass rush. What do you all think? Are the Jets wasting their time looking at the former Patriot, or would this be a good pickup?

We need
to do something because Pace won’t get it done.
This is what it sounds like When Doves Cry- Prince
I think it's telling
of the faith they have in Westerman. But I’d rather see McIntyre get the playing time
get it done
we need all the help at OLB we can get
metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?
The abdominal tear might have had something to do with it. Probably just wanted instant production instead of waiting for him to heal, and figured they’d get similar results from Carter. Wouldn’t surprise me anyway. Belicheck’s scheme can cover a lot up.
Just tryna make bank, bro.

We could definatley use him. Pace just looks slow and we are relying on him very heavily in that position. We need help there and with all the blown opportunities to pick someone decent up in the free agency frenzy this looks like a good pick up to me. Especially since he’s a Pat and he’ll play his hardest in those games lol.
I think Jim Leonhard should be in the next Nike "Boom" Commercial or at least the next time he makes one of those tackles he needs to jump up with a can of Kool-Aid and shout "Oh yeah".
It
Amazes me how a defensive mastermind Rex does not see, has not seen the clearly mediocre players he has at OLB position. All of the lockout, training camp, pre season. This is the one position we got to get strong. Pace or B. Thomas may be over rated.
Gut feeling is that Rex probably figures that he can work with mediocre people at the OLB position, scheme-wise, and would prefer to spend cash and draft picks shoring up other, more critical positions. If a stud is there and is a good value, I can’t imagine him turning him down, but it’d probably REALLY have to be worth it, since he can get by with mediocrity there.

I'm
just tired of seeing the schemes to get pressure at the passer. We clearly need natural pass rushers. I may forget about the slight it got from the FO during the draft and free agency. I dont mind using next years first round pick and second round pick on an OLB. Think about the havoc this defense would create if we got two edge rushers who could draw double team. Until that happens the NT, and the D’ Line would constantly find it hard to generate that rush.

I Hear What You're Saying
but if Rex truly thinks that way, and doesn’t see the OLB as a critical position, then I think he’s absolutely nuts. LBers are always important in any scheme. The whole reason for a 3-4 is to have quicker, more agile players making the plays on RBs and the pressuring the QB rather than big OL. What does Rex do? He gets big, slow LBs. It’s just plain stupid. If that’s truly his philosophy, then I don’t think he’ll EVER win a SB.

As I said below I'm thinking that Pace's contract situation really makes it..
impossible to get an elite pass rusher which would be a much better upgrade and not worth it to pick up a somewhat pricey pass rusher(Being a proven pass rusher is going to make you at least semi valuable, its hard to find these guys on the cheep and if we could I think Tanny would have already gotten one) who is only going to be marginally better leaving us with a lot of money tied up in a position and still mediocre production.
Very True
In the 3-4 scheme OLB is the critical position (and NT)…but the point is to have quicker more agile players compared to 4-3 lineman to make those plays. The 3-4 scheme actually requires bigger linebackers than a 4-3 to take on lineman and shed blocks. Atleast that was the logic the FO spun to us when they traded Vilma and allowed Harris to take over. I LOVE Harris but never understood why they couldnt keep both Harris AND Vilma.
I'm thinking the major road block is Pace's contract...
Its huge and ties up a lot of money in that position, and the way it is right now we can’t even cut him or it would be worse. With that money being given to Pace and the new salary cap the jets can’t afford to pay a pass rusher at that position who is that much better then pace. So if you pick up a guy who is slightly better or maybe even a little more then slightly better and sit Pace on the bench. Your paying Pace 7 Millions dollarsish to sit on the bench and the new guy who is “better” then pace is going to want at least what your paying the back up so 7 million for him, your basically paying 14 million dollars (or even if you could get the new pass rusher to go on the cheap the first year for say 4 mil..11 Mil total) for production that is only marginally better. When in reality 11-14 million dollars should be buying you top flight pass rushing production. The only way for the Jets to improve this position with the current cap and Pace’s contract situation is to hit the lottery with a young guy they singed on the cheep, sign a vet or a guy coming back from the injury on the cheep.
Whatever they do they have to do it on the cheep, because if you bring in another guy who’s only a bit better then pace and give him a 5-7 million dollar a year contract, you are basically starting the “Pace Cycle” all over again and locking yourself into mediocrity at the position for years to come.
we need it
get him in there. we had little pressure on romo with a young and inexperienced oline. imagine when we play a team with a solid oline. we need him. sign him.
Bant- Cain
He’s worth it because his contract would not be guaranteed.
Meh. Bring back Maybin instead.
I’m not impressed with him. He’s faster than Pace or Thomas, but his overall game isn’t as good. He had 10 sacks one year, big whoop. He’s 31 years old and is one-dimensional. If we wanted one-dimensional pass rushers I’d rather see Maybin back—younger, faster, way more upside. At the very least at least give McIntyre some pass rushing opportunities.
And probably more importantly, I’d like to have some safeties that could actually cover.

I reminds me
how funny the combine is. Thomas became a first round pick because of his remarkable 40 time (4.47!?); Pace ran a (4.65) forty. Both seem mighty slow on the field. Anyway I agree-Banta-Cain is nothing much.
Pace is 30 now...
And B. Thomas is older, I’m not really surprised they have lost a few steps since their days at the combine. Not saying the combine is an accurate portrayal of how fast someone plays on the field, just in both their cases that was ages ago.
So you'd rather have Maybin over Banta-Cain?
10 sacks big whoop? Maybin has ZERO sacks. EVER. Banta-Cain is significantly better.
I don't care how young he is.
The fact of the matter is he doesn’t produce.
Who cares if he's younger...
I want the better player now, and thats Banta-Cain.

Banta-Cain is significantly better.
I agree. Banta-Cain has at least shown you he can get to the QB in a game. He isn’t great, but he’s better than anything we’ve got, and definitely better than Maybin IMO.

Why is he better than what we have??
Pace had more sacks per game in that year, and half of Banta-Cain’s sacks that year came against the Bills. In fact, in his career, Bainta-Cain has about a quarter of his sacks against the Bills. He is nothing-worse than what we have.
Banta-Cain has gotten more hurries and QB hits over the past two seasons than Pace.

And I think strangely enough, the Bills thing is another point for signing him since we play them twice a year.

This isn’t even a question. Yes, Maybin showed flashes in the preseason…against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Banta-Cain, although not an elite pass rusher by any means, at least has some credibility and the numbers to back it up.

Can't Wait.
Yes
vis-a-vis Maybin. But I just don’t see how he is any better than what we have now in Thomas and Pace.
Easy depth...
Thomas and Pace are every down players, Banta-Cain may not be any better, but you can rotate him in on passing downs, and that should mean better results for all three.

Yes
I think whether Pace is better than him or now, he would be a good additions on passing downs.

Totally agree
I think having a fresh guy come off the bench who can create pressure is worth it.

I Hope I'm wrong
but after this preseason and first week I do not think this is our year. I would like to see as much emphasis on building for the future as winning it this year. Therefore, let us take a good look at Maybin during the season, because I’m afraid we will have to us our first round pick next year on a WR.
If you're judging anything on Week 1 or the Preseason
then there’s a 100% you’ll be wrong. I remember last year after the Ravens game when people said Sanchez was a bust
Damn we are desperate
It might be a decent pick up, but the guy has only 27 sacks and 4 force fumbles in his eight year career. I don’t see him automatically changing the Jet pass rush issues. I agree with Exystence, I rather give Maybin a chance.
From a Patriots fan perspective
The huge gripe we (Patriots’ fans on Pats Pulpit) had with Tully was his lack of repertoire. It seemed like 90% of the snaps he was in there for – he would take an outside route toward the QB. Often times he would ignore the fact there was a RB in the backfield and open a huge hole on the right side where back would run through untouched. It was really frustrating to watch him use the same move over an over again – especially coming off a 10 sack season. He was OK against the run, but nothing special. Maybe he adjusts or is used differently for the Jets, but he’s most likely not going to make a huge impact.
By the way, I’m a Pats fan living in NJ. I was born in MA. Although the Jets are the enemy, I like watching them – especially when I cannot get the Patriots on TV or the computer.
That is at least
the one thing that Thomas is good at-he doesn’t do much but he rarely makes bad gambles and he is mostly helpful against the run. He was supposed to be a bookend to John Abraham in a 4-3 when drafted (with his “blazing” speed) but really he is just a guy that stays at home.
You probably like watching the jets because, unlike the Pats, the games are usually tight in the 4th quarter :-).
As with many patriots players
you have to wonder if his production on the team was based more on the defensive scheme rather than his raw ability. This worries me.
I hate that this guy had his surgery done at the last second costing him time in the regular season. All I’m hearing is that this was totally on him and that the team was very dissapointed. I don’t like seeing that in a possible Jet.
Also. I don’t care who is telling who that he is fully recovered. Surgery to the core of your body has to get tested on the field. Workouts and physicals don’t tell the whole story on recovery.
He has to come dirt cheap for me to be interested
Unrelated and very minor
But the Chargers have signed K Nick Novak to replace Nate Kaeding, who is out for the season with a torn ACL. From the first play of the season.

Underrated great pickup!
Can give us info on the Pats but most importantly, he’s a borderline starter even at 31. If he only gets to play 15 games this year I still see him picking up at least 5 or 6 sacks off the bench.
Pats defense is different this year
Not sure how much info he can give, so that should only be a minor factor. If his main role is to get after the QB, then he could approach 5-6 sacks. They do play the Bills twice – where he seems to do well.
Didnt we go washed up last year?
JT was a washed up pass rusher and so is he but atleast JT had credablltiy I believe Banta-Cain has only had 2 good seasons
TBC isn't very good any more.
Half of his sacks in his 10 sack season came against the Buffalo Bills. He’s average against the run, can’t drop into coverage, and his only move (“speed around the edge”) isn’t sustainable due to his age. He could be a role player, but he’s not a very good option.

I don’t see Maybin coming back at all. There was something they really must not have liked that we didn’t see for them to do drop him like that. Rex probably wants a veteran that he can just throw into a system and pick it up pretty quickly. Banta-Cain is probably more in those lines than Maybin. I think it’s a good pick up . We’re built to win now! (heh for the last 2 years)
And yeah if half those sacks came against the Bills we play them twice this year and if Fitz lights it up like he did this last Sunday a bit more this season I’m ok with BC throwing him on his butt.
I think Jim Leonhard should be in the next Nike "Boom" Commercial or at least the next time he makes one of those tackles he needs to jump up with a can of Kool-Aid and shout "Oh yeah".
agree
i dont think that maybin is comparable to banta-cain. maybin was considered a guy to develop who could potentially help down the line whereas banta-cain is a guy that could step in immediately. although im not 100% convinced that maybin cant help us win now. im one who would have liked to see him on the roster.
The Jets need more push up the middle
They need a Kris Jenkins to prevent QBs from stepping up in the pocket. If Romo couldn’t step up, Pace might had two more sacks Sunday.
Confused...
Word from manish, is we will not sign TBC. Also reports Sandejo was released and Berning cut from PS. That’s leaves a spot on the roster and the PS wonder who is coming in?
