Do not sound the alarm bells, but Cimini says the Jets' first round pick from this year sat out practice.
First-round DE Muhammad Wilkerson sat for the second half of practice Tuesday with what was called a hip injury. The former Temple standout didn't participate in any team drills, watching from the sideline as Ropati Pitoitua took the first-team reps.
Wilkerson's injury doesn't appear serious. He could've returned to practice, but was held out for precautionary reasons, the team said.
What I find interesting is how this shows the current hierarchy on the defensive line. One can only assume Pitoitua is the primary backup at defensive end at this point and has an inside track to making the roster. That makes sense since the team was expecting him to take a bigger role before his injury last year.
The injury to Wilkerson does not seem bad, but I hope he gets back on the field soon. Every practice is important for him as he gets reps to work on his technique and understand his responsibilities in a live situation.
