The Jerricho Cotchery Saga...getting more and more confusing...

For the past 8 seasons Jerricho Cotchery has been a steadfast presence for the New York Jets. Always quiet, always humble, always working his butt off. He exemplified what it meant to be a Jet. Time and time again he put the team before himself, with no better example than when he had made one of  the gutsiest plays I have ever seen, last year. I dont need to even go into that play because ill assume everyone here knows what i mean. He did go through a pretty rough year last year, when he went through a case of the dropsies and he was pushed to the 3rd wr position with the addition of Santonio Holmes. During this postseason, he reportedly asked for a trade or release and after not finding a suitor the Jets released him as per his request. Reports claim that Cotchery was unhappy with being reallocated to the 3rd wr position and with the signing of Plaxico Burress to a contract worth almost 2 million dollars more, he decided enough was enough. Cotchery signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers a week later. But these reports are starting to make no sense anymore. If Cotchery's reason for leaving the Jets was being named the 3rd wr, then why did he sign with a team where he as of now is the 3rd wr and possibly soon can be moved back to the 4th or 5th wr with the emergence of Antonio Brown and others. It wasn't money either because Rich Cimini reported today that he signed for the veterans minimum which  is $810,000. Than what was it?? Someone is not saying something but for all us Jerricho Cotchery fans, who hated to see him go, we want to know what happened. Our team is not as good today as it was before he was released. Let us diehards in on it. We deserve to know.

My guess?

The jets thought his back surgery would make him a lesser player and thought someone else, like Mason, would be more productive. Since they have respect for Cotchery, they made up the story about him wanting to go be a number 2 somewhere else. Made him look good to other teams.

I don’t see any other explanation.

idk

the jets still wanted him though…they only looked at mason once cotch said he wanted out.

Cotchery didn't deny any of those statements.

The Jets probably told him that he was going to be a 3rd option again and that his already limited snaps would be further diminished as we looked to get Kerley, Cumberland and Joe McKnight more touches.

Could be he didn't get along with Sanchez/Rex

We will never know because Cotchery will never talk.

I agree with you.

I loved Cotch but I’m starting to think he wasn’t tight with the front office. It just doesn’t make sense. But then again, a lot of things we did this offseason didn’t make sense, so I’m not going to complain to much about this one.

by JetKing55 on Aug 16, 2011 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

It is simple

He has been a Jet for a long time and played his heart out. Homes come in and is #1 WR, OK, no problem. Edwards leaves so Cotch should be #2 WR, but we pick up the ex-con who has not played in 2 years and make him #2 with no completion. His pride was hurt since he was to be paid less and got no recognition of what he has meant to this team. I do not blame him for wanting to leave.

by viguy007 on Aug 16, 2011 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

maybe

the only way him going to pittsburgh as a #4 for no money makes sense, is if he thought he would draw more interest but realized that people were scared off by his back. Its just a shame to waste one of his few prime years remaining as a rental….

Steelers and Cotchery

I don’t know what Cotchery’s reasons for leaving were but the Steelers were very happy to have him on their roster. I suspect he will still get his fair share of reps. He is too good to leave on the bench.

I think a lot of it is ego.

It’s tough to be the third banana in a place you were once the top guy. It’s easier to be the third banana in a new place.

That goes along with what viguy007 said above. I mean to get replace by Burress has to hurt. Talent not withstanding, Burress’s situation was embarrassing and it has to bruise the ego to get replaced with a guy with such question marks. I’m guessing the FO ask him to take cuts to the vet min and he felt disrespected. If that were the case I wouldn’t blame him as he’s been a true soldier for us for quite a few years.

by Timmaht on Aug 17, 2011 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

But he made the request

before the Jets even could talk to Burress, let alone sign him, so that has no bearing on the situation. Actually, when he made the request, both Holmes and Edwards were free agents, and if neither had re-signed with the Jets, he would have been at worst a #2 if not the #1 coming into camp. I think right now he is saying all the right things, but he should be kicking himself inside as he not only cost himself $1 million+, but he would have had a more throws here to showcase his talent than he is going to see with the Steelers, barring injutes to their WR corps.

Personally, I think it's less cut and dry then what we're seeing.

It really don’t add up to what we’re hearing from the organization and J-Co. It’s moot I guess as long as Sanchez looks as crisp as his did on Monday and our line gets some actual non-3rd strings on it to keep him upright.

by Timmaht on Aug 17, 2011 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

It is perplexing

but like John says I think it’s just ego. Braylon can take less money in San Fran and Cotch can take the same slot on the depth chart for the Steelers. Their situations are virtually the same if not worse than they were with us, but arguably ego, whether in players/agents/FO or all of the above forced them out of town.

That Grass always looks Greener

Players are always looking at there next contract, and Cotchery had an opprotunity for a third contract in 2013, but playing in a Ground & Pound offense, and being relegated to a third receiver limits your opprotunities. Jerricho was a good soldier, a loyal teamate, but he felt the Jets were taking away his future. The Jets May also have asked for a salary cut of 500,000 as they did with Pace and Bart…
Jerricho simply over estimated his market value (so did I) thatcost him anywhere from 500,000 to a million dollars in 2011, try explaining that one to your wife. Now he is in an offense that throws the ball on a one year contract, trying for that last big contract, good luck.
The Good news, is that for all those players on the Jets who think that the Grass is greener somewhere else , think again.

J-Co's pride and ego cost himself money and probably his career.

Why would anyone throw him a long-term contract after this year? He’ll probably get minimum playing time and catches this season and coming off back surgery won’t help his chances. Also, have you looked at the FA’s that will be available next year? He’s going to be that low man on that list. He’s looking at another one-year contract at the veteran’s minimum AT BEST. I hope he has a kick-ass agent to even get him that.

by DesertJetFan on Aug 17, 2011 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

I'm guessing it had very much to do with a FO pay cut request.

I don’t know what his contract specifics were for us. But it could have been a take a pay cut or be cut situation, then pride kicks in, and he says he’s done.

It’s hard to blame someone’s ego who’s shown nothing but class since being with the organization.

by Timmaht on Aug 17, 2011 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I definitely agree it was definitely a mistake for him to leave.

It’s a shame we have to speculate on how his back surgery went and contract talks went but alas all we have left is Plax, hopefully without the gun show and injuries, and with the red zone skills.

by Timmaht on Aug 17, 2011 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

we gotta hope so...

I think he probably regrets it by now. He probably thought there would be more of a market out there for him. Ill welcome him back next yr as a #3 alongside holmes and marquis colston (or fitz as john b said) with open arms lol.

Thanks for Jerricho by the way. He has been awesome in camp so far and we are know the deepest WR group in the league

How's his back doing?

I mean I hope he’s fine, is there any lingering effects of the surgery that you guys have seen?

by Timmaht on Aug 18, 2011 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions

he wont have a good season

We are in another atmosphere. You're just in the Troposhere we in the Exospere. In other words the JETS are higher than you!

by Fly-as-a-JET on Aug 19, 2011 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he will.

He’s a good route runner and has great hands. That’s all you need ina Pitt offense that depends on Big Ben keeping plays alive and throwing up ducks.
