New York Jets Release Mark Brunell

Backup quarterback Mark Brunell is among three the Jets have released.

EA The Jets have announced that they have released QB Mark Brunell, and waived cornerback Will Billingsley and guard Marlon Davis.

The backup quarterback position is now in a bit of flux. It leaves Greg McElroy, Kevin O'Connell, and Drew Willy. Then again, was Brunell really an upgrade over any of them? I wonder whether the team has its eyes on a veteran for the job.

This also clears up $1.5 million in cap space. Maybe the team needs it for a certain cornerback.

Having a veteran back-up is always good. But now with the guy from the Colts, the offensive guru who I can’t remember his name, can really develop Sanchez. We could go with McElroy, or someone else

Yeah good with veteran QB but not ones who can’t complete a pass. I say don’t b afraid to let our young guns to ball. I was hoping for a backup QB who can sling it… McElroy is a good game manager, if Sanchez became a starter in d NFL with a minimal college start, then Elroy can b a backup in d NFL.

We have a veteran exception for him...

but not sure how that exactly works. I think we can offer him like 3 million, and it doesn’t count toward the cap.

Not really.

There are plenty of things that Tannenbaum can (and will) do to generate more cap-space. He can restructure contracts (although, there is some uncertainty about Sanchez’s ability to do so), he can release players (although, it’s been reported that Bryan Thomas won’t see that fate), he can play around with Harris’ contract.

That’s what I’m not so worried about the Jets spending so much money on one position — albeit a very important one — they’ll still have room to make some much-needed additions.

If you're interested, you can follow me @TokenNBR.

Releasing Mark Brunell, an 80 year old backup QB who played at a mediocre level against a terrible team in his lone action on the field last year, is hardly a desperate move.

if they get Orton, Henne is gone. If they don’t Moore puts pressure on Henne he doesn’t need.

Putting the Cart before the Horse

Why are the Jets worried about the cap before they get Asomugha? Sure you can plan cuts, but it seems silly to already be cutting the guys to save a tiny bit of money when they don’t have Asomugha yet, and you don’t have to be under the cap until August 4.
