Prelude to Free Agency (Finally!!!!!!!!!!)

As the news starts to sift in that the lockout may finally be coming to an end (I almost don't want to write this for fear of jinxing it) its time to (finally) actually start thinking about free agency for real. The Jets will probably be one of the most active teams in FA as they have many FA's on their own team and many holes to fill if those players are not resigned. Additionally, there are other FA's out there who can be very valuable to the team (you really think I, of all people, wouldn/t bring Nnamdi into the discussion?????). Reports are saying that the cap will probably be set at $120-123 million, or slightly less than the $128 million it was in the last capped year of 2009. So what should the Jets do?

Star-divide

First off, here's the list of important Jets free agents (I'm not listing type because I don't know what the rules will be)

Santonio Holmes

Braylon Edwards

Antonio Cromartie

Shaun Ellis

Brad Smith

Steve Weatherford

Nick Folk

Trevor Pryce

James Ihedigbo

Eric Smith

Drew Coleman

Brodney Pool

Wayne Hunter

Robert Turner

Frankly, my first options would be to take care of Santonio and Braylon above all else. I don't really care if Brad Smith stays, I feel he's pretty replaceable. I'm fine if we keep Cro but I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to get Asomugha if possible. I've already stated my reasons numerous times. Ellis can walk. I don't really have a preference for Pool or Smith per se.

What do you guys think? How should the Jets approach this? Who should they keep? Pick up?

I really hope we resign Pool, I thought he was one of the best guys on D we had in the playoffs last season. As long as he stays healthy (re: no concussions), he would be a guy that has some real value.

Because he had one year where he didn't have concussion (he still missed time)

does not mean he does not have a history of concussions. There’s nothing unproven about it.

Top 4 Contracts that I think we MUST get done...

1. Harris
2. Braylon (only because he basically ‘guaranteed’ to be cheaper than Holmes)
3. Holmes
4. Cromartie (I still don’t trust Wilson as our #2)

Mind you, if by some miracle of God, we have a shot at Nnamdi for the price of Cromartie/Holmes(probably both) I’d jump all over it.

As for the rest, I’d like to see Pool back, maybe Ellis for some vet leadership… but that’s about it. Not that I don’t like them, I just think that they’re more easily replaceable.

here we go again

i would also like to get nnamdi, but the odds of him ont getting over payed by some team is about nil. i know he would like to come to the jets, but if there is a considerable difference between our offer and and another teams offer, nnamdi will sign with them. also, i think we need to keep ellis for one more year. if he leaves, we have wilk, k. ellis, devito and pouha. i think we need some vetern experiance on this line, and if ellis is willing to come back for a reasonable amount, i’d love him back, just so we can ease in our rookies. i personaly liked pool, ad if his contract is 1 mil like last year, i wouldn’t mind him back. we better keep braylon.

i'd like ellis too but i think he may cost too much, unless he gets the exemption jb talked about

in terms of veterans on the line i’d like to keep pryce. he’ll be cheaper (though obviously not as good) and rex has already compared mo wilkerson to him. also keep in mind that on the line we’ll be gettin pitoitua back from injury. he really looked like he was coming into his own last yr

Braylon and Santonio.

Both are necessary I doubt we can make a move for a WR like sidney rice if we lose 1 of the 2, ad I don’t want to be stuck chasing Randy, Plaxico, or Vincent Jackson. Sign both of them FAST!!!!

No way

Keep one let one walk and bring someone like a maybe Stuckey or a Naanee even Lance Moore at a lower rate then go after Nnamdi

by JETSFAN IN SC on Jul 15, 2011 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

PLUS

Nnamdi could take less to go to a team closer to winning a SB which would then solidify his HOF bid

or so we would hope

i happen to thing naanee is way better than moore or stuckey both of whom i view as basically a poor mans JCo whereas naanee is more of a poor mans braylon

What's wrong with having Holmes/Cotchery or Edwards/Cotchery at outside?

Moore or Stuckey could then be the slot WRs.

Believe me Cotch is perfect in the slot.

He was just injured last year. If we could keep him in the slot and have to legit outside WRs it would make an amazing trio.

by JetKing55 on Jul 17, 2011 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He is

But he’d be fine on the outside as well. Then you can have Moore or Stuckey playing in the slot.

metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?

by dabu7 on Jul 18, 2011 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

But with the salary cap back in place, and even lower than what it would have been if the owners never backed out of the CBA, I think most teams will have to stop looking at what would be the most ideal situation for one position. Would having Holmes, Edwards, and Cotchery as the 3 WRs with Revis and another CB, such as Kyle Wilson or Chris Houston, be the ideal situation? Maybe having Holmes, Cotchery, and Moore as the 3 WRs and having Revis and Cromartie as the CBs is the ideal situation. From what I’ve read here, plenty of people have different views as what the ideal situation would be.

Though I must say, I’m surprised how many people here are thinking the Jets must target Cromartie or Asomugha. I’m surprised people haven’t mentioned Brent Grimes, Johnathan Joseph, or Ike Taylor. In fact, if both Cromartie and Grimes could be had for similar prices, I’d probably sign Grimes. I think Ike Taylor would be a very good fit for the Jets too. He is a very good CB and can cover more types of WRs than Cromartie can in my opinion. He is also very good against the run and could allow the Jets to be even more creative.

the only reason i dont like this move

is i think its absolutely imperative that the jets bring back both holmes and edwards (and if they miss out on one, to at least sign a player who is close to that). the only way the jets will get to the super bowl is if sanchez paves the way. therefore, i think its ultra important to give him as much as he needs. i’m afraid otherwise it’d cripple him

by JETSFAN IN SC on Jul 15, 2011 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Touchy, touchy

If you haven’t noticed by now, I am not a Hater or a Homer. I am not full of envy about the Jets at all, nor am anti-Jet because I like another team in the division. I am brutally honest about all topics, whether they’re anti-Miami or pro-Jet. Some may have noticed that I do not come here and rip the Jets, though admittedly I don’t post here as much because I have not been interested in many of the topics discussed here. I’ll blame that one on the lockout preventing quality news and updates. I come here and voice my opinion on topics I am interested in, but their rather honest and unbiased.

The Jets are attractive for FA, yes, but that is not why I think their chances of landing Nnamdi has decreased drastically. The reason is because they have many of their own FAs to take care of and I don’t believe Nnamdi would take that much of a discount to play in NY. The only way I could’ve seen the Jets having a shot at Nnamdi is if the salary cap fell to around $135 million. I’m sure you’ll have other Jets fans here have similar sentiments about the chance of Nnamdi landing in NY.

Thanks.

All teams have their annoying fans that troll, but they also have their share of reasonable fans that like to discuss topics with other teams. I like to think I’m in the latter because I do like healthy debates and I am interested in the new of rival clubs. That and I live in NJ so it is hard to miss Jets and Giants talk… though I am a Giants fan so I enjoy their news. :) I’m sure that just earned me another mark here lol.

I went the way of my family, who was born in north NJ.

I grew up watching the Giants and Yankees, even in South Florida. I naturally took to them, but I naturally most coverage was of the Dolphins and their games were always on, so of course I will fall for the hometown team. I cheered regularly for the Yankees and didn’t mind the Mets, but the Marlins weren’t around. I had to discard the Mets because they were division rivals, but I never could discard the Yankees and Giants.

you're right

i wrote a few fanposts detailing how the jets could very realistically get nnamdi but those were more under an assumption that the cap would be more torwards $140 million. the only way the jets prob now can get him is if santonio or braylon walks

metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?

by dabu7 on Jul 15, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it will be tough

But let’s assume Nnamdi takes a huge paycut to $9 million, putting him under the likes of players such as Nate Clements, and they can get Edwards or Holmes for a quality price of $5 million, that still leaves the Hets with about $5 million to work with even if dead money doesn’t count and they rework deals with Sanchez and Harris. That is a tough position to be in even if they do let Santonio or Braylon go because they need to sign their draft class and fill out their roster from other UFAs they need to sign. Realistically, the only way I can see the Jets getting Nnamdi is if both Santonio and Braylon walk. The Jets really don’t need Nnamdi and are better off keeping Holmes or Edwards and going with another CB. Even if Cro doesn’t come back, there are other quality CBs out there.

you as well as i know that nnamdi will not take that drastic of a paycut

additionally they wont be able to get holmes that cheap. i can see nnamdi taking a salary at say $13-14 mil (significantly less than whats reported he’ll get). and while true they dont NEED nnamdi, but getting nnamdi could very well be the piece that would push them over the top. if they had both nnamdi and revis theyd prob have bar none the best pass defense of all time

metsjetsknicksrangers.............can it get any worse?

by dabu7 on Jul 15, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably

But I agree, there is little chance Nnamdi takes that much of a paycut. I easily see it getting to $12-14 because he can be convinced the economics have shrunk and he can’t accept another $16 mil deal. But even at $10 mil, Nnamdi is pushing the limits of what the Jets can afford.

I was just surprised at the way it developed because they were even discussing the possibility of NO cap when talks started. I wouldn’t even be shocked if they rolled out something upwards to 130, but clearly the owners are serious about cutting back salaries.

At 120 million the Jets can barely even keep their roster intact as it is. Good news for you.

The Jets roster

Not really that great of news because all the teams will be equally limited. When the Jets made these moves and went into 2010 with this roster, I always believed last year was the boom or bust season for the Jets because they were going all in. I never believed the Jets would keep all their pieces in 2011, when I knew a salary cap would come back (Owners would never allow uncapped NFL). However, I am relatively surprised at how well the Jets have done to keep as many pieces as they have. Even if they don’t get Nnamdi or lose Holmes, Edwards, or both, they will still be competitive.

the thing is most of their good pieces are the young guys who they can keep

sanchez, revis, mangold, brick, keller, harris, greene. meanwhile it helps that tannenbaum is an incredibly creative gm and also that rex is a coach who players wanna play for so its easier to get players from other teams to agree to come to the jets

It's not that we won't be competitive

we’ve managed to make seasons out of garbage rosters, let alone talented ones like we have now.

You cannot deny that in recent years we have made a habit of getting bigger names and riding the cap to its limit. Jets fans have come to expect FA or trade magic from Mike T every year, and it’s not going to happen this time. I like our draft class, I just don’t see how you match the last two years effort with a shell of your former roster. Which, one way or another, is what it will be if our cap drops that far. I’ve been saying it all offseason, sacrifices are coming and will need to be made.

Tanny and the roster

It will be harder, but this is why you expect young players to improve. Winning teams have this because teams will always lose players. As fas as expectations, I think everyone believes their GM can pull rabbits out of hats. It seems like people think that if players like Asomugha or Young is available and their team can use him, they will get him. They forget that there may be 30 other teams trying to get him too.

Mike T will be wheeling and dealing the second the lockout is lifted he pretty much always gets his man so i really think every thing will work out plus improve as the Jets have every year talent wise since Rex has been at the helm

I think Rex could turn the Bad News Bears into a decent team.

I just don’t want you guys to be disappointed when “Mike T magic” doesn’t materialize this season, because this cap is LOW for us.

Give you an idea; counting all of our departures we have less than 9 million dollars to work with under that model. That’s 9 million to resign all of our departing guys including Edwards (who made 4.6 million last season, more than half of our free $$$) and Holmes (big pay day coming) on top of any replacements we’d want for Ellis, Jenkins, Woody, etc AND any additions.

Tell me how you make magic out of nine million. You don’t, not without serious sacrifice.

Here's what I think the Jets need to do...

First, they’re going to have to restructure Sanchez’s contract, give him 6 or 7 years. He wants to be here, and he will be here (he’s not Pennington) ouch.

Sign Harris to a long term contract too (That’ takes care of all 5 players).

Make sure you sign Braylon during the 3 day period. All that BS about Santonio, let him go to the Skins, he’ll be dying to come back.

Sign Shaun Ellis and Damien Woody. One of them would count as a Veteran player who doesn’t count against the cap.

BIGGEST POINT – SIGN MIKE SIMS-WALKER. Sims-Walker is a beast, he played on a run-first team, and would not command the money that Santonio would.

Sign Brad.

THen take care of one of the DB positions:

CB – Josh Wilson – Ravens
CB – Jonathan Joseph – Bengals
S – Danieal Manning
Even Donte Whitner from the Bills (not great in coverage, but can play the run)

by Josh Schneider on Jul 20, 2011 8:19 AM EDT reply actions

Ellis and Woody

They’d still count. You can sign veterans for minimum contracts, which for many is around $900k, but only a portion of that counts against the cap. You can’t sign Ellis or Woody for $2-3 million and still have only $400k or so count towards the cap.

except resigning brad. there’s absolutely no reson to bring him back, especially considering he’ll get overpaid by some other team. he cant catch and he’s only valuable as a return guy or wildcat/reverse guy. the return value is easily replaceable as is the reverse guy part. frankly, i dont think any jet fan would be all that sad to see the wildcat go either
